You are old, Grandpa Maher
a poem by Lewis Carroll, edited by Elessar ‘You are old, Grandpa Maher,’ the young man said, ‘And your hair has become very white; And yet you incessantly stand on your head - Do you think, at your age, it is right?’ ‘In my youth,’ Grandpa Maher replied to his grandson, ‘I feared it might injure the brain; But, now that I’m perfectly sure I have none, Why, I do it again and again.’ ‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘as I mentioned before, And have grown most uncommonly fat; Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door - Pray, what is the reason of that?’ ‘In my youth,’ said the sage, as he shook his grey locks, ‘I kept all my limbs very supple By the use of this ointment - one shilling the box - Allow me to sell you a couple?’ ‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘and your jaws are too weak For anything tougher than suet; Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak - Pray how did you manage to do it?’ ‘In my youth,’ said his grandpa, ‘I took to the law, And argued each case with my wife; And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw, Has lasted the rest of my life.’ ‘You are old,’ said the youth, ‘one would hardly suppose That your eye was as steady as ever; Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose - What made you so awfully clever?’ ‘I have answered three questions, and that is enough,’ Said his grandpa; ‘don’t give yourself airs! Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff? Be off, or I’ll kick you down stairs!’ _______________ The Senatu philosophy: every JKA player is essentially a baboon who likes to hit stuff . -Senatu brother to Buster and Dracolich. -Proud owner of Draco's 50th, 99th, Degor's 500th and Maher's 3519th comment! -Proud owner of the last word in the everlasting conversations with Maher. I think you misread what I meant by the winning and losing part. I used it to illustrate the point of a debate and tying it to the necessity to having a neutral tone.
I'm confused, Maher. I'm talking about debates in specific and I believe that's what you were hinting towards wanting to discuss. From your last response it seems like you're just talking about casual speech. Casual speech is more informal. This can include chatting, flirting, arguing, patronizing, etc. Debate is formal and is not just spontaneous. Two parties either agree upon a formal argument or they build up to it. Building up to it involves what I had mentioned in my previous response. For the sake of simplicity tell me exactly what you want to discuss. In one sentence, because I'm a little confused right now. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." This comment was edited by Augusta_Mintaka on Jan 12 2010 08:02am. |

Debating is never about winning or losing, even though they are in competitions. If you win then you succeeded in having somebody else accept or consider another perspective. If you lose then you learned something new. In every civil debate where people meet on equal grounds both happen so winning and losing becomes irrelevant.
This seems off topic, but I'm going somewhere with this. The purpose of mainting a neutral tone is to meet the person at a common ground so they might clearly understand each other. If one party does not understand, you have lost the purpose of debate because they will neither accept your stance or learn from your efforts. It essentially becomes an argument and arguments lead to strain between the individuals participating. A neutral tone requires empathy. You must observe the issue from their side as well as your side. This means you can't directly attack their opinions unless they are concrete fallacies (slippery slope, etc) or unproven concrete information. Also, what ties this all together is the need for clarity. This is the primary point of having a neutral tone, because it is a forced tone in that we are following rules (ie not being one sided, reducing subjectivity, etc). If you are not clear in your words (tying back into your use of "Bull S***" ) then this leads to misinterpretation. This confuses the whole point of the discussion and is likely to end in an unexpected way (fist fight, breaking of a relationship, inability to meet at common ground, etc). When I learned how to conduct formal debate, I thought it was an easy concept. The rules were quite simple, generally they are as follows: 1)Empathy 2)Clarity 3)Open mindedness 4)Consistency 5)Staying calm 6)Focus (most important in verbal debates) Honestly, they are very hard to follow. Accepting the opponents point in order to prove your own point felt like a paradox. Being consistent is hard when you cover a broad topic and can't help but jump subjects a lot. Staying calm can be hard which makes focus impossible. I don't mean to simplify debate by just saying "keeping a neutral tone" because it's more complicated than that. At any rate, my point is conducting a debate requires preliminary understanding and agreement. It is very easy for an abortion debate to turn into a fist fight if you don't at least make an effort to follow the structure of debate. Anybody can do it right, but few opt to. If it looks like you're going into an aggressive conversation then it was never a debate in the first place. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." Those with the most influence don't speak the same way as the newer generations. They dictate how schools teach language and how we are expected to speak. If you don't speak how they expect us to speak then we receive negative labels like "thug" or "punk". As those who do not conform come into power, our language changes accordingly.
Also things like religion, social status and culture influence this. It's a broad topic Maher and hard to discuss unless you are a little more specific. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

By the way Maher, you're interested in philosophy, yes? Did you read anything by or about Wittgenstein yet? I'd greatly recommend his works, especially the "Philosophical Investigations". Language is like painting, the words we use in different situations displays our emotions and intentions in the same way colors in a painting can amplify the theme and mood of a painting. We have different variations of so many words for this very reason: "to display our emotions and communicate our thoughts with a great degree of accuracy"
To take part in a debate you must use a neutral tone or it will seem as if you are attacking rather than discussing. Every language, I believe, has the proper words to express your thoughts as such. Debating is rather universal for the most part and you should only take part if you can keep a neutral tone. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse." |

In the context of a debate, I do not see how you can mix up such a breach of etiquette. Normal speech maybe, but debates require a neutral tone. English isn't my first language either, but I didn't use it extensively until I learned the etiquette surrounding the language.
I'm not trying to be critical here, but you cannot conduct an intellectual discussion without knowing the subjective side of a language. Communication only requires basic speaking skill, but discussion requires insight. You tread a very thin line if you try to have a civil discussion without knowing that saying something like "Bull S***" would be counterproductive. _______________ "Deos fortioribus adesse."
