"The Way of the Jedi (by Odan-Wei) We, members of the Jedi Academy community, are all Star Wars fans to some extenT. What gathers us is the appeal of being a Force user, whether light or dark, it doesn't really matter. In the end, we are friends sharing a common interest. Among the ambitions and expectations one may have inside the Academy, I distinguish: improving game skills, making friends and community improvement. We all probably came here to evaluate our skills at some point, being public server players seeking new challenges or complete beginners seeking help. At the same time, for those of us who enjoyed the particular atmosphere of this community, we stayed and made some friends, and hanging around was and still is a lot of fun. Then, at some point, one may realize that they have been involving themselves so much in community life that they wish to help make things go smooth, to improve what already exists and to create new sources of fun. Then she starts thinking of becoming part of the ranks. Here come the hard path, the path that can't be walked by just anyone. Not that ranked people are an elite and like to be praised. No, the ranked ones do not like to be praised, they are part of us, members of the JA. Their dedication to the community is strong, yet they did not show any ambition of becoming JAK+, they showed a strong appeal to help the community. At some point many students do think of becoming a ranked one. But no one can request to be trialled. One have to be chosen. Once you are selected, you can enter the process that will possibly make you a JA Knight. This process is not just about skills, otherwise many people in the JA would be JAK+ already. Skills do count but the triallee 'spirit' is just as important. What I'm trying to say is that the ranked members of the JA do not hold admin powers and 'priviledges' because they had the ambition to do so. They were chosen, trialled and remain on the edge while doing their duty. That means becoming a JAK+ is neither a goal nor a permanent state. To quote a famous movie: "With great powers come great responsibilities". That means the advantages of becoming a JAK+ are counter-balanced by the very fact you get a big load of responsibilities, to make sure you keep your head at a normal size, your feet on the ground and realize you have to be an example for the other members at ALL times. That's why I chose to call this article 'the Way of the Jedi', because in my mind, Jedi have to do what we do: keep showing others what is the greater standard in their universe, keep being themselves despite the fact they wield powers that are not accessible to common folks. The path to the ranks is no different to the one of the Star Wars Jedi. We, ranked ones, are following this hard path that asks dedication, patience and an even temper. We give a part of our everyday life to the community, doing our best to make the JA a fun place, a place of friendship, knowledge and well-being. We are the servants of the JA, entrusted with the tools that allow us to do our duty. We are the peacekeepers in every JA space, we are the guides that helps beginners improve their skills and we are friends to every member that agrees to follow the rules. We try to do our job thoughtfully, always concerned by people's feeling but remember that the tag is not a mark that requires special treatments. It is merely a sign of recognition that allow everyone to come and ask us to help if needed. We're only humans, driven by the purpose of making the JA membership an durable and enjoyable experience. Remember we are here for you all, as there would be no JA without the students. |

Good article Odan. Full respect to you and all the Ranked members. Can I just point out to all the new students though what a few people have already said: the JAK+ are in most respects equals of the students. This means that you don't always need a JAK or JAT to solve all your problems. Like everyone else they are busy people, and if you look at the number of ranked members compared to students, you will see that they can get spread pretty thin. So don't assume a student won't be able to help you with that difficult move you want to do. Or that they can't give you their opinion on game tactics. The JAks and JATs are the students who have been recognised to do these things well already, and therefore been given extra tools and resources to continue in this way (such as the admin and jk server commands and the ability to teach formal classes).  _______________ A wizard did it. |
