Certificates/Awards at the Jedi Academy???

Well i was playing on the servers when i had what I personally think is an intersting idea. So listen up. :D

I have been around the academy for a while now, and while I still find it a ton of fun, sometimes i yearn for something more. Something to achieve by being here. A lot of people join here and set themselves the goal of being a JAK, even though we all know JAK is not a status symbol, but a responsibility and a job. However perhaps some members become dissatified in the knowledge that they will probably never be anything more than a JAS/JAP. They can't exactly just apply to be a JAK :P . However it doesn't necessarily have to be that way.

So heres my idea: What if we had a set of "certificates" to show that a student had achieved a level of skill or knowledge. For example we could have an award to show that a student had mastered the basics of red stance. Or that they had shown they understood CTF tactics. We wouldn't make it compulsary for students to attain these awards. However they would serve to show that by attending classes and practising they had achieved something.

I think this sense of achievement may be just the thing to keep students interested. And to give anyone who wishes to try for them something to aim for, an objective from their time. The other important thing is that by someone achieving an award they don't have to uphold any special responsibilities like a ranked member would. Thay are simply recognised for their achievement. They don't have to be especially trustworthy, popular, or any of those special qualities of a knight. It would be a more open thing to all members.

How would they be assessed? Well i have a few ideas as to how that could be done. But right now I'd rather get some feedback on what YOU the members think of this idea. So vote AND post, please. :)

Here is my view of the whole thing.

If there is certs or points to be gained then there will be collectors. Thats the way of human instinct. The JA is 100% a place of learning and friendship and we take very clear step to keep it from being a competitive place.

Bottom line. There will be collection people who will go to any length to gain more certs. Some people with many certs might even develope a big head about it and consider themselves above those with less or none.

We have had several systems like this over the entire course of the JA lifespan and all of them failed miserably.

It's more of a place to collect information rather than certificates.

If Real Life takes you away, I'm sure that you'll remember the people and the comments you recieved. :)

/me shrug

You can have a lil something to remind you what you were part of.

as far as the collectors, its not a place for them, its a place for everyone. that includes people that might wanna show off how many they have, thus bein.... dun dun dun COLLECTORS

that would encorage collectors, if ppl can see how may certs they have.

would discorage them if you were the only one who could see it and know what it really ment

Well, first off, the academy isn't a collectors ground, it's more of a school.

We do see others are doing well, and everybody is good at something, even if it takes time to learn, people will notice as you progress.

Posting on the users profile and/or talking with them is good. Gaining a positive comment on either your profile or on IRC, TS, JKA etc is more than a certificate. It is a face to face telling that you are doing well. :)

I haven't thought the following idea through completely, so there will be errors

What if we make kind of 101 classes
For instance:
Red Stance 101 - Swings
You come to the class, you clearly show you know the basics to Red Stance, and the teacher clears you to come to 102, Combo's.
Or something like that

I've been thinking about this for our mapping class, kind of ...

how?

im not thinking about any trials, im not thinking about any classes, im thinkin like all the JAC/T/K's notice one person who's standing out as a good member/duler but mabey dosent want the responsablity of being a knight.

So they get a certi for

Effort
Duleing (now only the best people would get this)
Dedication
ect ect.

not as complicated as (just first think that poped to mind) a Lvl 5 Red staff certif

I'm thinkin much more general

In my opinion the academy is not a place for awards or student ranks. The academy an uber long time ago had ranks for students and they were gotten rid of because of so many reasons. Some of them were that there were trials like every second of the day giving the JAKs/JATs less time for classes and making them work their butts off with the points and crap. I think the awards are just like those ranks and are more of a hassle than anything. All it would be is another form of ranks.

Ares - the fact that you're in it for fun is very respectable, and I admire that very much, as to me, it's mostly about fun, but also about providing a good service in the JA. However, some people seek glory and recognition in games like JK2/JK3... so, providing these kind of certificates tend to encourage competitiveness, which isn't what we really want to do here.

Thanks

Ares, we tried a similar system in the past, and people were more concerned with the ranks (or certificates in this case) than actually learning something. If you want to go get a rank, join a clan. :)

Mike, I have a clan, with a lot of ranks, and I don't care about them.

What I want is to have a nice game with friends, train and become better with friends, and to just have fun in the game.

I think it's a nice idea, to keep motaviting people, but if it didn't work in the past well... Then it's maybe for the best.

I don't care much what happends, it's what the members want.

I think the JAK+ will hate it, the JAS/JAP will love it.

I've seen enough, very impulsive idea's who generally rule in theory but suck in practical use.

However this idea is very nice imo.

As probably 90% never will make JAK+ this still gives people something to motivate them to keep on going and to expand someone's horizen (other saber/force/guns etc.).

It needs to be worked out in absolut detail, and of course the JAK's+ need to approve, but personally I think this is a gr8 way for the academy to get more active, fuller classes and for the students the will to keep on training.

I voted Yes. Nice idea!!

I understand how people may feel they want a little recognition for how they have improved. Personally I just like to come in a have fun.

Whilst i understand the logistics might cause a problem. I have a few Suggestions that may help this work.

* Replace some classes with Cert Classes. Format - 4(or so) Students who enroll have a chance to pass a trial rated by the JAK(teacher). If they pass (They can add a Note to there profile E.g JA Red Stance Lvl 2, JA Guns Lvl 3, JA Yellow Countering Lvl1

*Simple objective can be set based on current class formats.

* Time limits set on reapplying, if failed, and restrict the number of Certs classes a student can enrol in every month to prevent a few students monopolising Cert Classes.

Just my ideas to add to Ozz nice post.

MTFBWYA

yeah, I see Roans point.
Just as Mike, I remember the old days when the JAK+ had to trial/whatever u wanna call it/ people like 90% of their time. and that sucked.

well, if some teachers would do this for their classes, why not ? They can limit the class to like 4 enrolled people and there you go.
