Suppose the JA had a new website?

What would you want to see in it? My recent project has taught me much of the arts of software development. To make sure these skills grow I'll yet again be redesigning the JA website. This is much more than a visual retooling. I'll be rewriting the site in PHP 5, using classes, a template system, new database structure that meshes better with our current site needs, and all layout being handled by css (no tables!). This will probably take some months to accomplish, so while I'm working on it I'd like your input as to what you'd like to see on the site. No idea is too big, small, too smart or dumb. The one thing I don't want is images in forum posts and signatures. That drives me up the wall. No flash either.

Another reason for doing this is because I get at least one request a month to see my site code. Right now I don't give it out because frankly it looks like ass. I did the bottom level stuff a long long time ago. This new site will be spic and span on the inside and out. :)

So lets hear it!

no, the database that stores everything will still be there.

If that were to happen, Orion will be deleted too! :P

DJ did a check a while back. A lot of profiles were closed. Many were enabled again as timed went on. They are still opened even now... :P

I think inactive profiles should be deleted after 3 months. Also merge same forums into one eg the 3 or 4 SW battlefront forums all talking about the same thing taking up realestate. An honor roll for JA who have passed on with there profile image and a brief JA aproved eulogy starting with valdarion might be an idea.

about the profiles.. I don't think that will work that well.. if someone is away without explanation because of RL .. and comes back to find their profile deleted.. they'll be annoyed.. maybe a status set, that if they don't login in 3 months.. their status changes from student to inactive or something.

I also want to suggest that for new students that they won't be able to view our server information until after they have gone to the rules page and checked-off an acknowledgement of reading and understanding the rules. This way no new student can come into our servers without having seen the rules page.

Aron and I have chatted about something like that :)

Also it is very possible to code in server controls into php/sql. This would be a great feature for our JATs and JACs (though you guys can just access the server console :P) and do stuff like change maps, ect without having to even get in-game. So if a Knight comes into IRC and needs a map change, it isn't hard for a JAT to do it. Sourceforge has some examples of this.

BOO!! Real admins access the server console through putty!

I think there should be a feature that would allow JAK+ to write a thread in HTML (XHTML) :D. It would be completely optional though and we would have some guidelines on dos and don'ts.

I also want to suggest that for new students that they won't be able to view our server information until after they have gone to the rules page and checked-off an acknowledgement of reading and understanding the rules. This way no new student can come into our servers without having seen the rules page.

Also when you get your application accepted, the first time you login you will automatically be taken to a page that explains how the website works/what to do/where to go. Basically like the welcome messages that people like Bail Hope leave, but this way they don't have to stumble apon it while getting to know the site.

And I love the server statistics idea. :D

Gradius, shut up no one cares about your ideas. :P

Seriously though; I think some more fields in profiles would be cool. Like "Nationality", "Age", etc. I'm pretty sure this wouldnt be much more effort. And split the crazy forum into 2:

One to keep as the JA crazy forum

The other as a JavaGuy-posts-crazy-links forum. :P

No site should look good in ie. all site should be standard complient not IE compilent, IE is a horribly broken excuse for a web browser.

Well, maybe everyone who joined before the move could have "Before */*/*" where "*/*/*" is the date the site was moved.

I was just wondering if the forum_search could be added to the menu's.
I think it's a bit annoying when I want to search for something, and have to go all the way to the forumpage, first.

Not a problem on a cable connection. But it is one on a 56k, in my opinion

A Watch feature for forum threads: When a user posts a thread or a comment on an existing thread he gets a checkbox to decide yes or no if he wants to receive an e-mail notification every time a new comment is posted to the thread. There's also a Wach button at the top of very thread (if the user is signed in) so that the user can add it to his Watch list. There's also a link to the user's Watch list (again, only appearing if you're signed in) that shows your entire watch list, with a link to each actual thread, plus a checkbox next to each one and a "Remove Selected from Watch List" button.

And that's a more detailed software requirement spec than you're going to get from most employers. :D

I've been thinking about this for a while: Server stats. Not just who's on at the moment, but historical data that can be queried and displayed with graphs. I think that would be really cool.

I understand why you don't want images in posts or signatures. Take a look at my own signature. But what if you allowed the standard ubb [img] tag with the image size fixed? I.e. I could put an [img=http://myimageurl] in my post, but the image would always come out in a small, manageable and non-obnoxious size that doesn't send everybody into scrollbar hell.

Okay, I just thought of another reason why you might not want images in posts. I don't know a good solution to that.
