Suppose the JA had a new website?

What would you want to see in it? My recent project has taught me much of the arts of software development. To make sure these skills grow I'll yet again be redesigning the JA website. This is much more than a visual retooling. I'll be rewriting the site in PHP 5, using classes, a template system, new database structure that meshes better with our current site needs, and all layout being handled by css (no tables!). This will probably take some months to accomplish, so while I'm working on it I'd like your input as to what you'd like to see on the site. No idea is too big, small, too smart or dumb. The one thing I don't want is images in forum posts and signatures. That drives me up the wall. No flash either.

Another reason for doing this is because I get at least one request a month to see my site code. Right now I don't give it out because frankly it looks like ass. I did the bottom level stuff a long long time ago. This new site will be spic and span on the inside and out. :)

So lets hear it!

ooo ooo oo, ive got one. How about images in signatures, and choices of which color theme we want (i think the current layout is nice, i just dont like the colors i loved the old blueish theme.) Also a nicer and cleaner forum would be nice. not sure howd you do that but it just looks sorta stuffy.

good luck man :)

Firefox > Opera > Internet Explorer. :D

There's still a possibility of this, since it can happen in most browsers. You click a link from a thread, and it could be one which you haven't logged in to.

Well, if you are logged out, check the address bar. Unfortunately, the URL 'http://www.thejediacademy.net' is different to 'http://thejediacademy.net'. Now, you may have been logged in to the first one, then clicked a link to the second one, which you aren't logged in to. It could also be that you didn't tick the 'Save Login' box before logging in. I use Firefox with no problems.

I just noticed a couple of bugs with the current site :O with other browsers (opera and Firefox) weird things happen.

with firefox, when a thread is opened with all bold/diff font sizes, the whole site is reformatted with the new font, size etc. with opera, the site accepts the logins, but when you go back to the forum, you are logged back out before you can post. anyone else with these probs?

if you had that.. you'd also have to have another box for north or south hemisphere as well as it's opposite

I recently had to put my clock forward, where someone in the nothern hemisphere would have had to put it back an hour

It would be a simple matter, on the profile edit form where you enter your time zone, to have a checkbox indicating whether you observe Daylight Savings Time.

Now I don't think all places begin and end Daylight Time at the same time, but surely any "overlap" would not be for too many days, so pick a date when it begins/ends, and those of us whose Daylight Time doesn't start/end there will have our time wrong by an hour for a period of a few days.

good point, then we wouldn't have to ask for it all the time ...

I kinda mentioned this before to DJ but he was prolly drunk and forgot

a base time showing on the website.. something small that changes to what your gmt is so it shows your own time. and in effect gives people the right time for classes..

when I first started I had heaps of issues with the GMT. because of the day light savings.. my GMT is +10. .but because of the daylight savings. it's either +9 or +11 and I have to change it every time it changes. I suppose it would be difficult to fix cause not every state has daylight savings time or whatever, but a visible time upon the website would let you know that the gmt you have chosen corresponds with your actual time. so you don't turn up an hour early or an hour late for class ( which happened to me a few times ).

also something for just profiles. I know it might be a bit annoying to put in but a little mini time next to their names which show their personal time.

I think it can be useful. For example if someone said a thread, for example, on etquette was pointless as nobody read it, the no of views would show otherwise. it would also show if someone was putting up pointless threads which nobody was intrested in.:) (im not referring to any threads here right now, but in other forums...)

It would also show if perminant threads or important announcements are actually reaching people.

mmm, personally I don't like those (sorry for starting a discussion)
I've seen several sites that have succeeded in completely making this the abomination of their own forum. If I click on my own thread, it counts as a view. If I click a second time, it counts my view again, and again, and again.
However, if we could have a system like the 'New or updated' thread we have going on, then it will probably be better.
Besides, do we really want to know how many people are looking at our threads without responding?:P

Just my ideas though, feel free to object:)

I was thinking it would be good to have on your profile page a spot for an alter ego if you wish. As not everyone wants to be light/dark all the time.
Also a merchandise page so you could generate some revenue for the JA, donating's fine but some people might like to contribute by buying things with the JA logo on it such as :polo shirts, t-shirts, caps, mouse pads, coffe mugs, beer coolers etc which you could make available on the site.
By the way has the logo been decided or can I still submit an idea?
