Suppose the JA had a new website?

What would you want to see in it? My recent project has taught me much of the arts of software development. To make sure these skills grow I'll yet again be redesigning the JA website. This is much more than a visual retooling. I'll be rewriting the site in PHP 5, using classes, a template system, new database structure that meshes better with our current site needs, and all layout being handled by css (no tables!). This will probably take some months to accomplish, so while I'm working on it I'd like your input as to what you'd like to see on the site. No idea is too big, small, too smart or dumb. The one thing I don't want is images in forum posts and signatures. That drives me up the wall. No flash either.

Another reason for doing this is because I get at least one request a month to see my site code. Right now I don't give it out because frankly it looks like ass. I did the bottom level stuff a long long time ago. This new site will be spic and span on the inside and out. :)

So lets hear it!

Yeah, that's another thing. I open two windows and click the same links so I can see what's said in the thread I'm commenting on. It'd also be nice to see the title somewhere too. :)

Ozzcoz--If you're on 56k and feel the need for speed on the web, I recommend using the Lynx browser. It is text-only, not very satisfying for viewing porn sites but great if you just want to check out the latest on the forums without waiting for graphics to load.

Actually, I believe every browser out there has the option to turn off graphics, but Lynx is probably the most "lightweight" of all of them.

That's what the Holocron is for, kinda. Maybe a link to it on the front page would be nice also. :)

Profile pics are nice and all, but coming from my old 56k background is a voice that says:

"Please add an option on the user's profile settings to enable or disable profile pics on posts"

Is this do-able? I was thinking something like the option to have posts in ascending or descending order. K Thx :D

K I didn't get to read all the previous posts and this made me think Could you have a "Find" tool like Ctrl F. So you could see if someone had already posted something without having to read evert post not just the page!!

Also the search tool that did exist so you could look at all the post by one person or on one subject it was cool.

Profile pics on posts are good they are normally the only time you notice them.

Um thats all atm. I'll get back to you

Opps forgot to mention a NIPPLE hidden on the site!! TY!

Hah, I'd like a name history. Would be pretty interesting to see how often I switch name. Or do I really wanna know...

Another thought: Name history. This would encompass two features:

1. On a person's profile there'd be a Name History link to display a list of the person's site names and on what date each one was adopted.

2. When you Search for a user on the About Us page, the search function searches all the user's historical names, not just the current one. (You still have the option to include or exclude inactive users.)

This way, if you search for a user who has, unbeknownst to you, changed his name, you'll still find him. When you find the link that says his original name and click on it to view the profile, you'll see right away that he has changed his name.

What I have in mind should look fine in IE, Mozilla, Safari, and Lynx (I use Lynx too :)) and be incredibly standards compliant. I'm redoing the db structure to make pretty much anything searchable. All current site data will be converted to the new format so we won't lose profiles or posts.

About the browser thing, yes it's good to be standard compliant. But it's even better when all academy students could have the same possibilities without to have to change their browser. Most of people are using IE, it's maybe good maybe not but it's the case. And you cannot ask them to simply change their browser.

For example I prefere IE when browsing picture galleries because in this particular case it's faster than Firefox. For all other stuff I'm right now using Firefox. Just think about the fact that the academy normally promote an open view and when features are restricted for users with the most common browser on this planet you're no more open.

So be standard-compliant but not in restricting features for the final users ;)

my 2 cents,

-Khâ D'Kana

On the browser issue, a couple things:

First it should be standards-compliant, not hooked into any proprietary quirks of some particular browser.

I use Mozilla at home and Lynx at work.

Second: Javascript is okay as an enhancement but should not be necessary. E.g., if a page has a form to fill out, it's nice to have a Javascript that automatically sets the focus to the first form field, but the form is still completely usable without that. Every feature of the site should still work just fine without Javascript.

/me dissagres

why support a bad product?

By many sites becoming standard complient with the W3 web standards for websites, this SHOULD open microsoft to realize they cannot always get their way and force everyone to conform to their ways. Yeah it did work for them, but now with the Mozilla Foudnataion's products gaining popularity, websites should stop being IE complient and focus on standards. Standards are a very good thing, they make development soo much easier in stead of making a website IE Complient, Mozilla Complient, Oper Compilent, just write it once and your done, none of these stupid hacks to get different broswers to look right.

Maybe a short paragraph linking to the registration page and the Holocron on the front page. This would clear up confusion for new members. :)

Ohhh, thanks for reminding me, Kueller... make a pop up for doing links, especially those that use the [url=lala]name, so you'll press "make link" and you get the usual pop up that says "please write URL:", and then "Please write text (optional):".
