Its just this one thing where new members dont want to duel because they feel that they are not good enought to fight some of the older members. And those who do fight often complain that they lost.

Guys your here to learn how to become better, and you will be beaten sometimes but dont let that get you down. We are all here to train to try and be the best and help others do the same. So if someone challenges you, dont think that your not good enough think of how this duel will make you better. And if you get beat then try and try again. With every duel you become a better duelest. ;)

Different people learn in different ways. Some learn better by seeing, some learn better by doing. Some find it easier if they are working as part of a group, and some find it better to work on their own. Just because someone else learnt in one way doesnt mean that is the way everyone should learn, try and find what works best for you.

Another thing: Practice your moves alone, without a dueling partner. Whatever combos you think are you strongest, practice them a little. Whichever you think are your weakest, practice them a lot, then try them out later in duels to find out what really works and what just looks cool. Experiment on your own to learn new combos and techniques.

<--- tried it, it can be done.

Ask Dash, Hitokiri, Setementor or even Leif. ;)

Always ask. As has been said, simply getting your arse handed to you time and again helps but asking how the arse-hander did it helps more.

Trainingspartners can be a lot of help indeed. Especially when it comes to getting the hang of exercises you picked up during classes, or just to have someone to randomly experiment on. Besides, you'll prolly become good friends ;) Its both usefull and entertaining! ^^

I'd like to stress this point more.

50 times losing can help you to learn, but after about 10, Once you realise there is somthing significant you are missing.

Do ask for help. Don't wait for it to be offered as you can end up waiting a very long time.

Some people will offer help of course. But I always worry when offering help as it could be taken the wrong way

"Hey im uber so i can help you because you suck"

is not the impression that anybody wants to give.

However if someone asks for me to help them I leap at the chance. Im sure many here are the same. Don't worry about interupting them (unless they are in the middle of a duel or conversation). It only takes a moment to say "Sorry im a little buisy at the moment, try and catch me a bit later".
and noone can whine about that (much)

As Tido said earlier, it's good playing people better than you. You can learn more from the person as you watch their technique and strategies in the duel. So, don't get sad when you lose to people, but be happy! In my years here, experience has always been the best teacher.:) Which is why I don't duel Tido any more, he sucks!:P

Anothing thing I strongly recommend you do is buddy up with another student and be 'training partners'. This makes a difference in how quickly you absorb new techniques. When I was a student, I would learn new things in classes and from masters, but it was the time I spent with my training buddies that I absorbed them and became effective at using them.

Well, what else are New Members to think? If they don't think they should duel you, tell them that it will help them in the long run. :)

well i mean... dueling with the same person 50 duels in a row is not very good

It's true that dueling the same person all the time is not the best way, but there's nothing wrong with dueling them 100 times straight if there's only you and your opponent on the server. It can still help you, but I do agree that if you don't duel others, it doesn't help too much.

Well lets not be overly politically correct here bro ;)
Losing IS losing when you end up in bits in front of your opponent on the floor. However, as has been stated time and time again, this is a useful thing - don't knock it.

For some sadistic reason, I enjoy it when i get dismembered. :D weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

When I first entered the Jedi Academy, I couldnt even find the matrix rooms ^^. (After 5 tours I finally stopped getting lost all the time :P)

The first times I duelled I got beaten a lot myself. (Ha! I STILL get beaten regularly! :)) Anyway, I look at losing as a learning experience too. Besides that, when I loose a lot, it doesnt get to me. I simply feel admiration for my opponent's abilities. This usually makes me come back and fight the same person, partly out of admiration, partly out of taking the chance of learning. All in all, I dont lie when I say: I just love getting owned! :D

Thats my personal view on 'losing.' You don't lose, you win experience and skill, while you have the chance of seeing an amazing dueller at work! ;)

lol, when I started I lived in spectator when I wasn't fighting :P. I still do on some folks. I purposely saught out the best fighters I could find and dueled them as much as I could. I also bugged everyone for training even though I went to classes regularly and my master Wolfwood trained me weekly.

Aye Tido, like everyone else make good points. A lot of us span back to the outcast days, so we do have exp. But the more you practice the better you will get. And don't be afraid to ask people for help. Most, if not all will be glad to help you. Just DUEL DUEL DUEL!!!!! It's true, your losses can teach you alot.
Something I used to do is go into spectator, cycle thru people and watch them. That helped me a lot.

Btw...you should actually expect to lose when you are new to this game.

I remember my newbie times and i remember how often ive been losing to all sort of people on pubs. But the thing is...you should definately start without setting any type of standarts in skill for yourself. In other words = expect to lose.
Try your best, but dont let losing mean anything to you.

Ive been losing constantly over like...2-3 months till ive started to notice first manifestations of skill within my own style and was able to beat few inexperienced users.
It all comes down to patience, activity and the will to learn.

Hah i still remember whining about losing on pubs like: "Aw man...i cant beat anyone...sigh"
And to my surprise...there was someone on that server who was nice enough to tell me something usefull which im trying to tell you guys now.

well im new and i can tell that
when you are dueling try picking as much opponents as you can. well i mean... dueling with the same person 50 duels in a row is not very good :)
you must try to fight different styles etc.
coz... i only fought yellow and red stancers...
and now i find it very hard to fight blue-stancers,staffers and dualers.
add variety to your opponents :)

Yeehah, that means I'll be awesome one day cos I ALWAYS get my arse kicked :D (Well not always, but most of the time :) )

I agree totally. I don't care who I duel (except staffers ;) ) If I get beat, I go back and see if I can change something to score another hit. I know I don't win many duels, but I look at the hp and shields when I lose, and see if I did more damage THIS time. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Big deal, I still enjoyed it. So yeah fight people better than you, you learn much more believe me.

Excellent points, both of you. Also, learn consciously as well as subconsciously from the people who beat you. Take demos of duels and review them later from various perspectives. And ask people who beat you what they did - ask them to teach you specific combos and things that they use.

exactly, every defeat is a learning experience, just as is each victory. the only true victory is if you win 100/50 and even then you can improve. practice is they key, watch people who are better than you and duel them, youll soo start noticing patterns and pick up a few tricks. :)

You'll only get better playing those better than you. You'll get lazy playing those less experianced than you. Every duel is a chance to get a little stronger. Every time you lose on that mat makes you a little tougher to kill. None of us just walked into the JA and started kicking butt left and right, we all got our butts handed to us alot.....alot! Something I've noticed is the people who go in for the most punishment accelerate faster than anyone else in skill. So next time you see some fighter who is far stronger than you, just remember not long ago at all he was exactly where you are. Don't be afraid to ask questions either ;), one on one training is awesome.
