Lack of Interest Killed the Radio Star

Well it just seemed like such a cool idea at the time. We had the buzzing forums, the active IRC chatroom, and our array of busy servers. Why not a radio station? It was going to be another medium that made this community unique. I once heard DJ Sith comment about how many logins the site gets in a day. It was an impressive number. Not to mention our servers have people in it most hours of the day. I knew we had a community large enough to enjoy a small online radio. I had already been listening to internet radio while enjoying jk3. Despite having a good sized music collection, I would get tired of it. Internet radio would fill the void for me. The problem is most internet radio stations aren't very good :(. The concept of our own station just screamed at me. But JA Radio isn't panning out like I hoped it would...

Flash forward to May '05. We have a radio set up with the awesome Ogg Vorbis encoding. We have a good set of DJs, a schedule, and even a spiffy 'On-Air' indicator on the website. Everything should be rocking....but it isn't. The DJs seldom get more than just a couple of listeners with some doing their whole shows and getting none. From an otherwise active community, the response has been depressing. Is the community too small to have this? Is the community declining? Does the music suck? Do the DJs suck? I really don't know how to fix it.

Some of the DJs are removing their shows from the schedules. I can't say I blame them. Being a DJ isn't an idle process - you have to sit there and organize it. It takes time from your day. Doing all that work for an audience of 0 isn't very appealing. These guys do great shows and really open up my horizions to new music. I really enjoy listening to what people across the world enjoy. But it's like I'm the only one most of the time :(. What is even more pathetic is how some JA members turn on their mIRC mp3 announcers just in spite of the DJ. What a jackass thing to do.

I really don't know what there is left to do. JA Radio was a neat idea, and I don't want to just abandon it. But if the JA is not interested in it, what's the point? If we have missed anything please post here your ideas.

Yeah a DJ shouldn't just play music. When you are a DJ, you're there to entertain. You have to make it interesting. I always try to mix it up when I DJ and keep people entertained between good songs (and a few bad ones :P).

The radio had a good day today :). CuZzA got 15 listeners during his show and I got 13 at one point. That's much better than what we've had in the past.

Also we're pretty close to having a working IRC bot in the chatroom. You'll see it there as 'JARadioBot'. He'll announce when the stream is active and when it's not, and also post what song is playing.
Commands:
!dj - shows what DJ is on
!status - shows what song is on, how many listeners, and who the DJ is. Also gives a link to the stream.
!request <artist - song> - sends a request to the current active DJ in his request queue.
!djon - enables you as a DJ (JA Radio DJ's only)
!djoff - removes you as the current DJ (JA Radio DJ's only)

Firstly my apology: I do strive to make my slots but RL always takes priority

and thanks you all for listening when I am on.

I think two hours is okay but the one hour Acey said is not a bad idea.

I do think we should encourage the DJ to speak between songs and do extra bits to make it more that a playlist, otherwise you are just listening to random music when they could listen to their own. (doesn't mention his request show which)

Also If we ever do the INTRO program for new students it would be nice if the JA-Radio was mentioned not sure this happens anymore anyway.

and Tido thank you for caring :)

talking, chat etc was the reason why i listened
to ja radio... i really enjoyed virtues good and bad(doesnt matter tho) jokes , TS crew ...
apart from talking there is not much with ja-radio... well except those rare masterpieces some of djs have...

We've got enough DJ's, we just need the listeners.

Problem is, people have no control over the music they hear therefore alot of people prefer to listen to their own music.

I also feel I can focus better when I have my own type of music, and not a radio with music, that i like and it takes my mind off the game :P

But sometimes I'd rather play with no music.
Keeping the radio going for a while might be a good idea, but I suggest minimizing the 'on air' time to just times of the day that the servers are busy.

Would that even be possible Orion?

We can't have pre-recorded shows. We can't have anything with music recorded period unless it's ourselves drunk on TS or something :P. The second you put "music", "recorded", and "download" together you'll get a very unhappy DJ Sith. Nobody wants an unhappy DJ Sith.

On the profanity issue, this has been the rule of thumb so far: you can have *moderate* profanity in the music or content, but you cannot use profanity yourselves (the DJs). Yes, some DJs have screwed the pooch on this. No, nobody is happy about it. Too many times I play a song not remembering or realizing there is a vulgar word in it. Trying to go through and pre-check a show before you air would take more time than any of us have. As long as the song isn't perverse, having a vulgar term in a song is...well..unavoidable. This is the policy that Virtue approved for now.

i can be a DJ got loadsa good songs but heres an idea, instead of doing all that work for no people to listen to, you could have links to the shows (have recordings somewhere) and when people come online they can listen to the show or shows they wanted to.

before I start my comment I have a few things to let you know..

yes I do know I havn't been around the academy in a while, as it has happened over the 2 and a half years I've been here.. my interest in the academy has dropped out yet again. but surely to return. perhaps I am returning again.

next. My next comments and criticisms I am comming from a position as the only person to successfully host a Jedi Academy RAdio show for a period of 6 months.
from july 2003 to january 2004, each thursday about 12.30pm GMT, I hosted a 1 HOUR show during that time each and every week without fail. Not once did I go under the hour length and never more than 10 minutes over the hour specified. like I said. I did this every single week, and each time I had at least 7 listeners each week. the Maximum listeners I had was about 18 of them.

I know I know.. this was way before the Winamp RAdio. yes.. I ran this radio through the Academy's Teamspeak server, the quality may have not been all that great, but I gave the audience what they wanted.

A lot of the current DJ's are quite a bit random. they would get bored and just leave the player to continue playing music, and the GREATEST infringement that I have heard on it time and time again, its even in the rules not to. EVEN staff and council are doing it.. Thats Profanity and that is a definate NONO...

we had a great purge against profane people in teh academy. telling them off should they swear or insult through the forums, IRC and even the game, yet they swear so much in the radio that it would even make JJ/Mike blush. REMEMBER... THIS FORMAT ANYONE CAN HEAR. You don't have to login to a forum or servers . some poor old lady could be listening to someone play classical then have the DJ swear openly. and this has got to stop.

I do know what I'm talking about. I did let the occasional bad word slip out during my shows, but I quickly appologized.. I think its enough of a rant now..

this is what I want the current DJ's to do..

ONLY do one show a week.. that is all you need to do, Capture your listeners.. listen to what they want and try to give them that..

Give plenty of Feedback and include your audience.. I held guessing competitions, people had a chance to talk as a starwars character ( thankyou KOyi the best at doing YODA )

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE

Limit your shows to only 1 hour.. this may sound easy but it isn't.. you have to choose exactly what music you want and what order you want it in, while adding time inbetween the occasional songs to talk to the audience..

The good thing about Teamspeak was that you could play the game and listen to it easily with no problems to connection.. the only way you couldn't do that was because you had a 56k connection

YES.. I RAN MY SHOW ON A 56K CONNECTION

I could continue this until I fill many pages so let me finish off..

All DJ's.. refine your shows till it is exactly as you want it. we don't need 50 million dj's for every single hour of the day.. thats a problem if you have too many dj's. it looses interest.

DON'T ASK TO BE A DJ IF YOU JUST WANT PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC. DJ's are specifically taking time out of their day to put to you an entertaining, exciting or enjoyable show.

so I ask the DJ's out there.. refine your shows... if you want any hints and tips.. CONTACT ME its not that hard. I will help every way I can...

thankyou..

Acey's Hour Radio show... may one day return ?!?!?
