Let's look at the facts: Poking = spinning or doing some funky thing with your mouse to increase the speed of your swing to the point where the game is unable to bridge the gap between speed and dmg, so it increases dmg to compensate for that, causing dmg THAT WAS NOT MEANT TO BE CAUSED in a single swing normally. That fits the definition of exploit quite well.

nothing really has an official name or official status as "exploit" or "Not exploit" its all up to you. Play how YOU want to play, listen to peoples opinions on how the game works and think carefully. Get some expierience in seeing all kinds of tactics, and decide for yourself what IS and exploit, what ISNT an exploit, and if you care what is what. above all, PLAY HOW YOU WANT! There are tons of players who dont wiggle or poke or spin or sway but DO aim their saber and are very good. You can extend red (very common) or extend yellow (less common) all it is is aiming your saber so your opponent hits a certain part of it.

Let people tell you what exploits are.. but dont just take there word for it. Decide for your self, based on what you know, what you hear, what you see, and what you do. :D

Totally agreed with bo on that one. I have experienced that people tend to misunderstand what poking actually is. You see, its quite unfortunate that its called "poking" in the first place, since the technique bo has described, the one which takes skill and is used to aim your saber at the opponent, actually SHOULD be called poking. The player literally "pokes" his opponent with the saber without wiggling it. However, the jk3 term "poking" has nothing to do with the actual english word "to poke". The jk3 term "poking" originates from the word "pokemon-swing" which has been made up by a few crazy european players a few years ago.
The technique which requires the player to skillfully aim the saber at his opponent whilst swinging, doesnt really have an official name at all. Most people ive come across call it "aiming" which is just fine with me. Unofficial names like these can lead to confusion and misunderstands though.

there is noob poke and pro poke (ofcourse if you can call pokers pros lol).
noob poke is mainly wigglin.
pro poke is just aim.
aiming like that bugz the game tho...
Aiming your saber through the swing is not a poke. I was taught to aim my saber when i first started playing a long time ago. The guys who taught me had been doing it since jk2. It doesnt deal more damage necessarily, it just keeps your saber pointed at your opponent, so that you have a better chance to with hit or block. It can deal more damage if the opponent just sits there with the saber in them, in which case theyve made an error in timing. Poke is wiggling. Its a term that euros use for wiggling the saber unrealistically during a swing. Aiming your saber takes skill, and poking takes sensitivity. If someone needs to wiggle their saber, then its likely that they werent patient enough to get good, and should be easy to defeat. Clans like dox, goa, and prophet are full of players who wiggle and are easy to defeat.

Im sorry but theres no JKA police or internet police that can tell people how to play or what to do. Just ask for help im sure someone at the academy can help you *cough* 3th *cough* JAK+ *cough*

K... Nothing wrong with swinging the saber through your opponent or aiming at him... It just get's out of hand when you're doing that at a sensitivity of 20+ and spinning and swaying while your doing it :P

There is a line between exploit and just aim, but the line is different for every person.

um? so now aiming your saber is an EXPLOIT? aiming bugs the game? come on man, this is just getting out of hand and very absurd IMO.

Hehe yeah. I think people's accusations of what is exploiting and what is not is getting rediculous sometimes. Anyways, that's the whole point of the poke: you don't have to aim and you do a ton of damage. For the legit players, they have to be so very accurate and aim their sabers. A poker just has to have a seizure with his mouse hand.

Quote:

i think everyone sways at least a little. happens when you follow your opponent with your mouse, which is good basic tactics :) it's just when they do like a 180-270 degree arc with yellow scissors or something like that, that it gets a little out of hand IMO.

Exactly. You really know you're crossing the threshold into exploiting when what you're doing becomes an act of desperation. Classic example is the guy who jumps at you, crouches, and then sways from left to right like your grandma did in the 'twist'. I can just imagine these guys with their eyes closed just thrashing their saber about, praying for a hit. As such I dub it the 'sway and pray' :P.

On another subject, a good friend of mine here at the JA who is in an official position here has recently made public his thoughts that the glide is an exploit. He told me he labeled it as such because he believes the glide is 'forcing a parry', or actually creating a parry swing which will cause a lot of damage. Respectfully I disagree with him and venture that a glide is mearly a swing lacking the 'wind-up' motion you usually have before the actual 'swing'. That 'wind-up' is replaced by the tell-tale animation fault where you hold your saber out infront of you. Then when the actual 'swing' part happens, you do a normal swing. I know they are not parry-swings because I can control what swing happens. With parries you can never control which direction the parry swing occurs, but with a glide you can do all 7 directions of swings at your will. You can even combo after them just like any regular swing. It is simply a bug in the animation that is typically used in the same fashion as a saber delay. And it's very easily avoidable; especially in how it telegraphs itself.

to sway you only need to move mouse like 30-50 degrees... to each side :P

true, but the range increases and dmg increases really become noticeable once you go really wide with sways.

anyone with any desire for not sucking at JKA probably does a 30 degree mouse turn on just about any swing, just to track their target. if that's the new definition of an exploit then we need to throw away our mice and go back to playing with the keyboard only :P

and Avalon, as long as you're not doing anything over the top, like big sways or spinning, any reasonable person isn't going to have a problem with your dueling :)

I have nothing against people using pokes or sways maybe once or twice when the duel is close - that's when it really matters. It's just that when other people abuse poking and swaying with yellow throughout the ENTIRE fight, then it gets really annoying, because no skill is being used to defeat you; they are merely employing their skill in using a cheap tactic, rather than using it for a fair fight. Often, misuse of skill is worse than having none.

There seems to be a thin line between 'good' and 'bad' here.

I dont want to 'exploit'. But there are so many different opinions about it, that its sometimes hard to tell if the swing u just did was an 'exploit' or not.

I try not to 'exploit'. Feel free to tell me when i do cross that line accidentally in a duel :)

EDIT: crappy spelling ;)

I found with certain ball mouses, if you slid it fast enough, and actually lift the mouse off the mousepad, the ball will keep spinning, as well as your character. I once maintained a crazy spin for 10 seconds doing that.

Hah, yea im sure thats quite possible with certain mouse types. I cant see it working with my mouse though =/
Also, ive noticed that everytime im trying to poke for real, im not poking at all but instead im spinning like dureal on crack. gg ballmouse >_>
