First of all, if you're new, WELCOME TO THE JA!! :D

ok now, I want people to tell me their experiences as "noobs" at the JA. as Ruuk so nicely put it in an email:

"Those of us who have been in here, even for a little while, kinda subconciously understand what we need to do to accomplish *this*, take care of *that*. But I think because of that very reason, we might tend to overlook some of the mini-steps in between that are just like, "well, of course you do that." Well, that's easy for those of us *inside* to say. It's not quite as self-explanatory when you're just coming in."

My job in the knowledge base project is to "break the fall" for those new students. So, I want to hear you people. What would you like, or what would you have liked to be explained to you when you're new? Or anything else. Any points about being new to the JA and making life easier during the first stages. Shoot.

p.s. i hope Ruuk doesn't mind me quoting him :)

Thanks for posting.

If anyone has time, take a stroll over to the Holocron threads and check out the "Prologue" short story O.Link and I worked on. This is our attempt at describing what the noob experience is, with a slightly different way of providing information. If noobs quickly read this before going too far their first day, they may just have a lot of their questions answered by reading it (and later, when they have time, checking out the rest of the Holocron too). We'd have fewer easily-answered questions posted here (which is fine - don't get me wrong!)... but they can then feel a little more empowered to jump in and play/participate... rather than need to ask for assistance.

Just my thoughts. Ok, that's enough. I'm done.

Well i had some strang experiences at the JA. Way back when, before Hux hadd joined let alone donate 6 servers(hes donated alot), I was logging on to DJ's (very laggy and piece of junk but loveable) server. When i got there it hapened, the moment we all fear.. NO ONE WAS THERE! so i logged off. about three hrs later the server had one spot left and i grabbed it. In the server i met 9 or so people including Zero , and a few others who quickly logged offf for some reason or another. and thhen i met UnitedKingdom3000(i think that was his name it was a longgg time ago. maybe it was UK3000 or something but hey my mem sucks.) well he found out that i was clueless. i mean i didnt even know what the hella DFA was let alone a combo(i knew the word just i didnt know any.) so he spent an hour teaching me everything i know. From then on i had fun on the servers and lost just about every match but i didnt care because it was fun to talk with peeps. Slowley the new rating system was introduced. and i got learner! and well i stoped there. i was of course to lazy to hunt down two JAts and get a trial. so i just went on. I learned more and finally beat a few guys and now after actually practicing i can actualy beat people. then i lost my Hard drive and well hear i am.

man do i have a borring life. that is like form september to today in a paragragh. thats pretty sad.:empire::alliance:

haha, Bubu has a new name! I love it! Anyway, i though I'd give my story on this thread as well....it's been like almost two or three months since I joined. And I guess I can speak for all noobs here that I'm really glad I found this place. The best damn servers I've ever found for JKII, and it's gonna be a while until I go back to the public ones. Anyway, when I first joined up, like one of you guys said earlier, i couldn't believe that this was free. Servers to go to, people willing to teach you (and duel you), the possibility of becoming a Padawan...it's so unreal, and it's something you'll never find on any of the public servers. I joined one of the servers (I think it was the main one ::shrugs::) and I was overwhelmed by the kindness and lack of abusive language in the text boxes. I was so tired of people cussing people out on the servers, it was like heaven :).
Anyway, the second time I came around, a Journeyman by the name of Narsil offered a tour to all interested in the server. I remember Forbidden was there...ah can't remember, but anyway...the tour was nice and detailed, and you could ask questions, like the purpose of the trials room, and stuff. There was a FFA going on outside too, so that was cool. :P Also, outside of the tour, he also told us the kind of stuff people are expected to know when looking to rise in rank, and we got a little mini lesson on that in the trial room. Anyway, after that it was smooth sailing. Narsil encouraged me to post on the forums, and sure enough I got like 10 replies. I was AMAZED. Personally, I just want you guys to keep doing what you're doing right now with the noobs. The fact that you could count on someone to help you out if you called for it was enough. And so I tip my saber in salute to all of you guys, for you really are the heart of this Academy. May the Force be with you always!

Ah, yes. That is the post I was waiting for. Thank you Peanut for providing some "intro to JA" questions.

And don't worry...this (soon to be renamed) "Knowledge Project" should hopefully answer all - or at least most - of your questions. And if we don't have it in there, you and others need to tell us so we *can* put it in there. :D

Sorry about Ubub!! Just pulled that out of my Ttub... ;)

It's only my second day here and... no wait, it's day 3, but I didn't come on yesterday cos I was too busy so it just feels like day 2... ok, glad we got that cleared up, anyway, I read all the site to see what it was all about, at first I was sure I must be missing some kind of hidden cost because what you all do here is amazing and I didn't think anyone would offer it for free, but you really do!

I went on the server soon after joining and everyone was really nice and friendly, and I learned more in my few hours on that server than I have in the week I've owned the game. I really like it here :)

However, I tried to go to my first class, on the classes only server, but it just kept saying "for low pings only" and reconnecting didn't help, and I only had 10 mins before the class was supposed to start and it made me feel really bad :( so I had to drop the class, I'm gonna try again this weekend and I just hope I have better results.

My recommendations to make it more "noob friendly" would be some documentation to add with your acceptance email, I know some of it is in the FAQ, but I felt a certain amount of hesitation about what to do. for example:
Can I just go on one of the servers?
Do I need permission off someone first?
Can I enroll in any class I want?
What time should I turn up to a class?
If I turn up early will I be interrupting a different class?
What do I do if I can't make a class?

ok, maybe I didn't worry about all of those but they have run through my mind at some point, because it's a new place for me, and I don't want to get in any trouble or annoy anyone so being sure of what to do and what not to do would be really helpful :)

Overall though I think this place is amazing, it's exactly what I was looking for when I wanted to learn how to duel! :)

UbUb is YubYub's ewok brother in Age of War! I invented it myself!

As for me, my story is slightly different. I joined the academy in January. As soon as I got into the academy the first thing I did was read about everything and anything that could help me find my way around the academy.

It actually took two months for me to get onto the servers, so by the time I started taking classes (just recently, due to map and connection problems) I was pretty well versed in the ways of the academy and knew all the rules because of the time I spent on the forums.

Jake - If you write extensively, like I do, you may find it helpful to type your comment up in wordpad or MS Word. I can then easily look at the comments and blank page side by side, and then add my 1 3/4 cents.

Bubu - I would like to see you write a simulated first experience. You say, "This is how it will be:..." then imagine yourself as a new person named Ubub. The first thing he/she did after filling out the form, getting accepted to the JA, was...what? What happened next? They logged on, went and got the server info, screwed up because they added JA as a favorite but forgot to do...whatever... They then tried getting on the server but kept typing o instead of 0 in the password... Finally got the server, was yelled at for shooting somebody to get their attention, didn't know they were supposed to bow, bleah bleah bleah. I think this short story can be an excellent way to convey *a lot* of information in a short amount of time, and can really put the new person at ease. I did something similar to this for the introduction in my Masters Thesis and it kicked arse.

You know what, nevermind. If you'll let me, I'll write that.

On that note, someone give me a good fake name to use in the short story. Or should I use Ubub? :D

My story is almost the same with fadedglory, except I had some trouble getting in the servers (wrong map). When I got there I realized it was a class, Skyler was teaching it. I asked him if I could participate and he said yes. After a while I gave Bubu a lot of trouble (sorry) and then I got kicked. Then I joined back, put on mindtrick and silently creeped to the matrix room and sat down. Then nobody noticed me because they couldn't see my name. Lol, I had a very hectic day and I caused a hell lot of trouble. I apologize for that :D
