First of all, if you're new, WELCOME TO THE JA!! :D

ok now, I want people to tell me their experiences as "noobs" at the JA. as Ruuk so nicely put it in an email:

"Those of us who have been in here, even for a little while, kinda subconciously understand what we need to do to accomplish *this*, take care of *that*. But I think because of that very reason, we might tend to overlook some of the mini-steps in between that are just like, "well, of course you do that." Well, that's easy for those of us *inside* to say. It's not quite as self-explanatory when you're just coming in."

My job in the knowledge base project is to "break the fall" for those new students. So, I want to hear you people. What would you like, or what would you have liked to be explained to you when you're new? Or anything else. Any points about being new to the JA and making life easier during the first stages. Shoot.

p.s. i hope Ruuk doesn't mind me quoting him :)

Jake - If you write extensively, like I do, you may find it helpful to type your comment up in wordpad or MS Word. I can then easily look at the comments and blank page side by side, and then add my 1 3/4 cents.

Bubu - I would like to see you write a simulated first experience. You say, "This is how it will be:..." then imagine yourself as a new person named Ubub. The first thing he/she did after filling out the form, getting accepted to the JA, was...what? What happened next? They logged on, went and got the server info, screwed up because they added JA as a favorite but forgot to do...whatever... They then tried getting on the server but kept typing o instead of 0 in the password... Finally got the server, was yelled at for shooting somebody to get their attention, didn't know they were supposed to bow, bleah bleah bleah. I think this short story can be an excellent way to convey *a lot* of information in a short amount of time, and can really put the new person at ease. I did something similar to this for the introduction in my Masters Thesis and it kicked arse.

You know what, nevermind. If you'll let me, I'll write that.

On that note, someone give me a good fake name to use in the short story. Or should I use Ubub? :D

My story is almost the same with fadedglory, except I had some trouble getting in the servers (wrong map). When I got there I realized it was a class, Skyler was teaching it. I asked him if I could participate and he said yes. After a while I gave Bubu a lot of trouble (sorry) and then I got kicked. Then I joined back, put on mindtrick and silently creeped to the matrix room and sat down. Then nobody noticed me because they couldn't see my name. Lol, I had a very hectic day and I caused a hell lot of trouble. I apologize for that :D

It would help if you just had like JA-BigBrothers who took care of the newcomers who had any questions.

I remember i couldnt dfa, wall walk, backslash/stab, or even kick.

As far as the posting thing goes, I just open up another IE and just go to the page I clicked "Add Comment" from. Although, having the previous posts would be nice.

As far as things for the new students, I like the overhead map idea. To be honest, now that I've been here a little over a month, the only rooms I definitely know are the Ceremonial Hall, Matrix and the Courtyard, I guess since they get used the most. I think setting up a tour with some of the more experienced students would be good. Just so they get the feel of things and can ask questions, etc. I don't know how involved it would be, but if we had a set list of "tour guides" that would get a partial list of new students (from DJ or Doobie) and then either post to their profile or email them informing them that you can give them a tour or answer questions they might have. Then the new student could either ignore it or try to set up a time to meet on a server for a tour or something.

Does that sound cool? I got lucky my 1st time on the main server. Arcuss came up to me and said, "Billy, follow me! I'm going to show you a few things."(thx again, Master!) I thought that was just a very cool thing. However, not all new students will be that lucky.

OK, I'll stop typing now, my kbd is starting to smoke!

Not always faded. It used to stay for me but now it doesn't. What I do is if I need to go back and read is copy what I've been saying because 9 times out of 10 what I have typed will have disappeared. And Jake that was actually suggested before to DJ about having the comments below while you add yours. Don't know if he ever looked into it though.

Dunno if this is handbook related but what I would like to see is a change to the posting system. Some people post very long comments, and most of them go off topic. You know the reason why ? They can't remember what was posted before them, or sometimes even the topic which the thread is based upon.

My proposal (no not will you marry me) is you find some some way, don't ask me how, to have the previous post or posts listed below your comment type box. I've seen this on laods of forums everywhere and it seems to be quite a common thing. If its possible I strongly advise that you do it, as to be honest at this very moment I can't even remember who posted the last comment :(

An overhead drawing with labeled rooms would be sweet.

A look inside the experienced players mind so the new guys don't get intimidated would be nice. I'll let you figure that one out :)

i came to the JA as a seasoned player of Jk2. so i was already familiar with the game, but only needed some explanation to the workings of the academy. i suppose i had it really easy though. first thing when i got on the server, ioshee quickly jumped in to give my a tour of the map and answer any questions i had at the time. it also took me very little time, a day and a half actually, before i gained NofrikinfuN as my master. i guess i'm a really bad example of a typical noob joining the JA the same day they bought the game. but those are my experiences as a new recruit, if you will.

the things I didnt get was the timezone setting in the profile, and the rank Tags.
these should be coverd in the FAQ, if not done so already.

and, I think there should be a piece of text that should inform a player about some general game / connectivity issues. like where to get the patch and some maps, etc.

keep it up, Master ;)
