Well, this game comes out at the end of the month so i thought i would start a thread for it to see who else is interested in it. :)

For those that do not know, the Elder Scrolls games began back in 1994, and are the creation of Bethseda Softworks. They are Action/RPG's, set in a fictional world of Tamriel, and each game is unique in story, and location, sharing only small things in common plot wise, although they all add to the history of the games.

I had not heard of them, until 2002 when they released Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind for the PC, the game was enormous, and gave huge amounts of choice in what the player did, right from the character creation onwards. Needless to say i was impressed. Anyway the game spawned two expansions, and has become hugely popular online among modders, partly due to its unique construction kit released with the game. It has also since been released on the X-Box.

The New game is designed for the Next-Gen consoles (360 etc.) and of course is also coming out for the PC, for which the specs are:

Recommended
3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements
Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB Direct3D compatible video card
and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

**Notes on requirements**
-There is currently no option to disable pixel-shading in the game, so if your graphics card has trouble with this you might have some problems. [Thanks to Masta for this]

The game is even bigger than Morrowind, literally huge in size and scope, and still contains all the customisation of the previous game (a lot more in fact), and its free roaming nature. The graphics are amazing. Also the Dev team have made the NPC's a lot smarter, using a new Radient AI program, which the producer refered to as a combination of Ultima 7 and The Sims, this results in some nice moments.

Unlock Print Screen (PRTSCN) button
There is a setting in the INI file:
bAllowScreenShot=0
change to:
bAllowScreenShot=1

There are two INIs, one in the game folder called "Oblivion_default.ini", this is the one it uses to generate the REAL one....
My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini

Edit the first one if you want to default to having screenshots on by default for all users. The settings it uses at runtime are the ones from My Documents folder.
After you mod the INI file, you can press PRTSCN button and Oblivion will write a BMP file to your game folder.
-To bring up the console press the tilde key (above tab)
-Typing TM into the console toggles hiding of all menus (for taking screenshots)

Available Factions/Guilds:
-Mages Guild [returning]
-Fighters Guild [returning]
-Theives Guild [returning]
-Dark Brotherhood [New](more 'evil' than the honourable Morag tong, shame i liked the MT)
-The Blades are back, again as part of the story [returning]

-The Arena [new] (lets you fight a variety of NPCs. Even after you have "completed" the Guild there will probably still be fights waiting for you at the Guild. You will also be able to bet on the fights that take place in the Arena.)

There are other factions although no others seem playable, they include the Imperial Legion, the Nine Divines (a temple group), The Mythic Dawn (Daedra worshippers), the Warf Rats (think Cammona Tong but smaller perhaps), and the Necromancers.

Updated
-There are other factions out there you can join, i don't actually know how many, but i recently joined one that was not one of the originals stated. These hidden factions are probably smaller overal than the Mages/Fighters etc. though.

Misc info
-Werewolves will not be returning initially although you cannot rule out another expansion.

-Vampires however are back, and with a new biting animation ;)

-Spears, throwing weapons (e.g stars), and crossbows have been removed.

-Each of the 9 major cities has a house you can buy and have for your own. You can go around in town and buy different things to decorate your house with, so you have places to put all the stuff you collect. One of the houses that you can purchase is initially haunted.

-go Here to find basic info on the skills in ES:O

the boringness of morrowind was there because npcs were like...dead. the developers noticed that and this gonna be improved greatly.

and if this game will ruin our moods... we still have gothic 3 coming...

Haha the nutters, yeah i'm not usually that into fantasy things, but this has a certain charm, and is so vast and well crafted its hard not to have fun playing it really, well that was the last game anyway i hope this new one is the same. :)

The main thing that bugs me is the hype games get, the Magazines hype them so much then slag them off when its finally out because it was how they pictured it to be...

The point being i hope Oblivion doesnt get caught up in a massive media hype a few days before release because it will just ruin it really..

Anyway lets hope PCGAMER isnt lying to us and it is worthy of its 93% ( perhaps he couldn't find a actual flaw with it and so he had to make something up just so he couldnt give it a 100% )

And remember just because he thinks its 93% doesnt mean you will personally be guaranteed to give it as much credit as he did ( with added money from publishers in his pocket )

Yes i agree with your first point, it irritates me when a game is massivly hyped, and all the previews say little more than how wonderful it will be, only to have it reviewed low with lots of (sometimes minor) criticisms.

The reviewer did seem to be a bit of a elder scrolls fanboy, however the review was actually one of their better ones in my opinion, added to this several other people in the magazine made reference to Oblivion, saying that it is high quality (one in fact said they were all surprised the reviewer did not rate it a lot higher). Anyway from what i could see it was as you say, the reviewer was inclined to give it a higher score (he says in the review it came very close to 96%) but decided to go for the lower score due to the ai deficiencies.

Oh and as Monteeee says its usually best not to just take a reviewer's word on the quality of a game. :)

thats why i dont usually order any game when it first comes out, or pre-order it. i prefer reading reviews than previews, they have more depth and actually the correct information on the game. Plus if people i know get it, they can tell me whether it sucks or not :P <3
friends ftw! :D

I have just read the PC Gamer review, and its an odd one for me. Its a long eight page review, that is certainly very complimentary, as are the other reviews referals to the game. However it gets a 93% score rather than a higher 96 or so due to a couple of minor problems brought up on the very last page of the review.

The reviewer says that Bethseda still have not got people quite right, the AI controlling the NPC's in the game makes some silly mistakes regarding their daily lives, such as when they talk to each other a conversation might sound strangely forced like so:
"I hear Errandil is good with a lockpick"
"I heard he is good with locks."
"Thats what i heard."
"Good day"

Ehe there are a couple of other minor things he has to say, but the main reason he lowered his score for the game was the quality of the background conversations, personally i can't see it bothering me much, and the rest of the review is while well written very complimentary.

93 is good for pcgamer really, anygame that gets over 91/92 have had the game publishes throwing the game at the magazines to make them write baised reviews and give them the awesome score.

The main thing that bugs me is the hype games get, the Magazines hype them so much then slag them off when its finally out because it was how they pictured it to be... well excuse me if you aint a game developer.. HL2 was a classic example - i know alot of people love the game etc.. but seriously did it really live up to its total hype? i found CSS more fun than HL2 but thats just me being me i guess.

The point being i hope Oblivion doesnt get caught up in a massive media hype a few days before release because it will just ruin it really..

Oh btw only one game has lived up to the hype for me, Ghost Recon - Advanced Warfighter on Xbox 360 is frickin fantastic and it goes beyond all that i have read about it in preview magazines etc..

Anyway lets hope PCGAMER isnt lying to us and it is worthy of its 93% ( perhaps he couldn't find a actual flaw with it and so he had to make something up just so he couldnt give it a 100% )

I found something else, i half remembered finding it but couldn't remember where last night. Basically Acrobatics will now do the unarmored skill's job as well, meaning a high acbratics skill will make you dodge attacks better (harder to hit) and thus help you in combat.

Aha yeah that was a pretty good tactic, however i usually only got into trouble i could get myself out of normally, or with a quick levitate (also removed :()

I did read something about acrobatics let me find it again and i'll edit this post.

Edit: acrobatics in O:

Preview at teamxbox.com:
Even jumping around as you move improves your acrobatics skill, which makes you more nimble and harder to hit in combat.
