Well, this game comes out at the end of the month so i thought i would start a thread for it to see who else is interested in it. :)

For those that do not know, the Elder Scrolls games began back in 1994, and are the creation of Bethseda Softworks. They are Action/RPG's, set in a fictional world of Tamriel, and each game is unique in story, and location, sharing only small things in common plot wise, although they all add to the history of the games.

I had not heard of them, until 2002 when they released Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind for the PC, the game was enormous, and gave huge amounts of choice in what the player did, right from the character creation onwards. Needless to say i was impressed. Anyway the game spawned two expansions, and has become hugely popular online among modders, partly due to its unique construction kit released with the game. It has also since been released on the X-Box.

The New game is designed for the Next-Gen consoles (360 etc.) and of course is also coming out for the PC, for which the specs are:

Recommended
3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements
Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB Direct3D compatible video card
and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

**Notes on requirements**
-There is currently no option to disable pixel-shading in the game, so if your graphics card has trouble with this you might have some problems. [Thanks to Masta for this]

The game is even bigger than Morrowind, literally huge in size and scope, and still contains all the customisation of the previous game (a lot more in fact), and its free roaming nature. The graphics are amazing. Also the Dev team have made the NPC's a lot smarter, using a new Radient AI program, which the producer refered to as a combination of Ultima 7 and The Sims, this results in some nice moments.

Unlock Print Screen (PRTSCN) button
There is a setting in the INI file:
bAllowScreenShot=0
change to:
bAllowScreenShot=1

There are two INIs, one in the game folder called "Oblivion_default.ini", this is the one it uses to generate the REAL one....
My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini

Edit the first one if you want to default to having screenshots on by default for all users. The settings it uses at runtime are the ones from My Documents folder.
After you mod the INI file, you can press PRTSCN button and Oblivion will write a BMP file to your game folder.
-To bring up the console press the tilde key (above tab)
-Typing TM into the console toggles hiding of all menus (for taking screenshots)

Available Factions/Guilds:
-Mages Guild [returning]
-Fighters Guild [returning]
-Theives Guild [returning]
-Dark Brotherhood [New](more 'evil' than the honourable Morag tong, shame i liked the MT)
-The Blades are back, again as part of the story [returning]

-The Arena [new] (lets you fight a variety of NPCs. Even after you have "completed" the Guild there will probably still be fights waiting for you at the Guild. You will also be able to bet on the fights that take place in the Arena.)

There are other factions although no others seem playable, they include the Imperial Legion, the Nine Divines (a temple group), The Mythic Dawn (Daedra worshippers), the Warf Rats (think Cammona Tong but smaller perhaps), and the Necromancers.

Updated
-There are other factions out there you can join, i don't actually know how many, but i recently joined one that was not one of the originals stated. These hidden factions are probably smaller overal than the Mages/Fighters etc. though.

Misc info
-Werewolves will not be returning initially although you cannot rule out another expansion.

-Vampires however are back, and with a new biting animation ;)

-Spears, throwing weapons (e.g stars), and crossbows have been removed.

-Each of the 9 major cities has a house you can buy and have for your own. You can go around in town and buy different things to decorate your house with, so you have places to put all the stuff you collect. One of the houses that you can purchase is initially haunted.

-go Here to find basic info on the skills in ES:O

I also miss the architecture of Morrowind

although morrowind and cyrodil are parts of the empire of equal size, morrowind had much more variety in architecture. thats a bit weird considering that dunmer are very unfriendly to outlanders thats why there shouldnt be any varienty in architecture. now in this imperial part of the empire there is big variety of races but... only imperial and ayleid architecture.

Yeah i love the story, however it has quite obviously been made more cinematic and shorter for console gamers. I felt Morrowind has a wonderfully subtle and tragic story, that was in places very unlike most fantasy stuff out there, it was one of the reasons i liked it.

Personally i feel this game does a wonderful pure fantasy tale with demons, secret cults, heirs to the throne etc. but removed some of the subtlety. I also miss the architecture of Morrowind, but thats just a personal preference, the roman/medievil style of much of cyrodill is wonderfully aesthetic and looks brilliant, however sometimes i feel it lacks variety. Sorry i hate to nitpick a good game, i shouldn't really.

Uhm i never said i didnt enjoy it. I love the game and think all of the quests are very well done. However, i spent around 2-3 months finishing every quest and finding every epic item in TES3. If you compare it to oblivion where it only took me less then 2 weeks to finish the vast majority of all the quests, its a bit disappointing.

Just finished the main quest. Its very very epic and i enjoyed it a lot.
However, im a bit dissapointed in how short oblivion actually is. It didnt take me more then 2 weeks to finish all the faction quests, the main quest and a vast majority of random sidequests. Not many things to do once you finish these =(

wtf? they should be creating patch instead of doing some buyable plugins. ffs they could even include them in a patch

Cheeky.. i expect it has a lot to do with X-Brick live to be honest, i had mixed feelings when i heard about these downloads before, had a feeling they would cost.

Also modders will be making stuff often better, or at least more extensive than that with the construction kit, and i imagine the freelance mods will still be free from various sites..

Edit: Horse armor i'm not exactly worried about missing, but that wizards tower sounds cool, ah well.

i spammed the first available healing spell and the best thing i got was ... WHAT - 25 restoration! lol!
alteration and illusion are easy to lvl coz the target is you (except the very first illusion spells like charm). destruction etc. is equally easy to lvl as long as you find target which:
1. doesnt deal damage.
2. has 999 bilion hp
:D

well dont be so harsh on alteration and illusion.
they are great skills! alteration - more stuff to carry, more armor, waterbreathing, lock picking!
illusion - paralysis, insvisibility, charm.

as for mysticism... unless you reach pretty high level (75 or something) its almost worthless.
and i cant get the point of telekinesis - pick items from distance - ok. throw objects for great distances? wtf? how? and whats the point of that? does that deal any dmg? i bet not.

Ah right, that sounds irritating, highest i got my skills on my first playthrough was a 75 for alteration, and i had sneak and marksman in the mid fifties.

Yeah i have restoration as a major skill, its much more useful in Oblivion than in Morrowind, where it was mainly good after a fight for quick healing. It and destruction are both vastly improved mainly due to the fact you can use spells while fighting.

Every skill is really easy to level at the start. Wait until you hit ~50-60 in acrobatics. Itll take literally ages to level it from there, especially if its a minor skill.
As for spamming spells, i actually have restoration set as a major skill in my current build. Ive been practically spamming the "minor heal" spell everytime i had some magicka available, till i got really tired of it and bought the "major heal" spell. Now, im really unsure if spells which have a higher requirement in a certain skill and/or cost more magicka to cast, are going to accelerate the leveling, but im still spamming the major heal spell as often as i can and its really really hard for me to get restoration beyond 65 =(
The very same goes for the "block" skill. Unless i excessively abuse it, i just wont level it any higher then 50-60 which is a shame.

its not that difficult to lvl skills as it were in morrowind. especially skills like sneak...
u had to bug the game in some way, leave the char there gg :)
now the only skills which seem bugged to me are athletics and acrobatics.
athletics coz of autorun feature and acrobatics coz of all those nice balconies like in bruma mages guild.

I've found its a little too easy to level alteration/Illusion and Mysticism, you just need one low cost spell and spam it in a room with a bed, get to the end of your magika rest and repeat, you can get to 75+ doing this easy for each one that i can see. Oh and acrobatics was easy to level before too really.

Im not a fan of oblivions level-scaling neither. I mean, its kinda weird that finishing the game with a level 5-7 character can be actually easier then finishing the game with a level 30+ character. I agree that level-scaling to an extent CAN be a very meaningful enrichment to a game. However, it should be handled with far more care then it is in oblivion.

Oh and Masta if i understood you correctly, i certainly didn't mean to say the new direction was a bad one, however i think it is in places poorly implemented. It is not as noticable to someone focusing on strong killing and defence skills, such as your character seems to.
