Quote: Im not sure how true it is but i heard vista has a super sweet caching system whereby it tries to guess your most frequently used programs and loads them into memory so it uses ALL of the ram the majority of the time so that when you click on something it doesnt have to go back to the harddrive to pull it up (which takes AGES), i guess the side effect to this is, if more memory is required by the system your OS has to drop aload of stuff and perhaps this is why its taking a little longer on applications that are already running?
Unsure....just a wild guess Yes, you're talking about Superfetch, which registers everything you do on weekdays and weekends and is smart enough to keep them apart. Theoretically speaking, if you play Jedi Outcast every Sunday, when you boot your system on Sunday it'll also load Jedi Outcast into the memory so that when you are in need of it, it starts quicker. That's a nice way of thinking, but I don't agree with it one bit. The Ram wil allways be full if you use Vista regularly enough for SuperFetch to comprehend what your next move is going to be (it won't work from day one) and what if extra memory is needed. From my experience with XP, I know that Vista will check if there is room available in the RAM, and if not, it'll write to the swap file on the harddisk which is one hundred times slower than a RAM file. So next time you need that particular file, it'll open slower, because it's swapped instead of mapped (RAM). This could mean that you get less performance out of Vista eventually. About Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast, I tried to test them with the last Beta from Vista and they didn't work there, something about openGL drivers that needed to be updated (a three year old game does not work with the currently supplied openGL drivers, go figure). This may have changed in the retail version, I'm not sure. _______________ Visit the Belouve Family Website! Quote: I try to have fun with my friends and try to make a difference as best I can. Anyone know if Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy can be played on the Vista? I know some older games don't always work on newer systems... don't know why though.

PC-Magazine, a computer magazine I'm subscribed to, tested Vista with games; their conclusion was that most games lost about 10 to 20% of FPS and in general you get 20% less out of your system than when you game with XP. Do you know why exactly? I know why. They fix one version of windows, and by fix I mean bring it to a stable and acceptable level. (Through ten billion updates) Then they go along, get their thinking caps out, and contemplate how they can ruin our computers now that they've repaired the glitch we once knew as XP (without Service pack 2+). Just recently they managed it, a big bank dent that we all know as Vista. The reason it has slower framerates is most likely because its one big screwed up glitch. It takes up more RAM than XP and generally requires a better system spec. Running Vista and then running a game is the equivalent of running two or more med spec games on XP at the same time. Without a PC that can fly using its graphics card alone you're going to experience lower frame rates. Give Micro$oft a few more months and they'll have brought suffecient updates to make the booboo's better. The getting less out of your system part is most likely due to the fact that Vista won't have been tested with every single motherboard layout possible. There's bound to be some kind of conflict with Vista. It's like getting a new car without a chassis. Of course, I could be wrong. And Vista could be absolutely perfect... A lot of benchmarks comparing Vista and XP report more or less the same thing. They do report nice stability and security though. Nevertheless, Windows Genuine Advantage is present and you can't reinstall more than 3 times. There are a lot of (legal) ways around this, by making a backup copy of your wga file in the system32 directory and pasting back into the system32 folder after reinstalling. This only works if it's the same computer, you can't use it to hack/bypass the WGA. I'll stand by their advice that you should better wait for Service Pack One (planned for later this year or early next year). XP improved drastically after this one as well _______________ Visit the Belouve Family Website! Quote: I try to have fun with my friends and try to make a difference as best I can. Stable? We're talking about MS here! [/prejudice] Quote: C: Will my games gain or lose FPS in general? Theoretically, due to the vista's new WDDM structure which is supposed to have improved video memory pooling, streaming and allocation, and generally enhanced ressource handling; there should be a somewhat improved performance with most application, even when running with the DX9 API.
However, i'm not sure if the theoretical enhancements will be visible in reality. One cannot say for sure, until vista has undergone excessive testing. If you plan to upgrade to DX10 anytime soon (or play halo2), i'd certainly reocmmend getting vista though. _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here!
