As most of you know (or who know who I am), I'm pretty much a silent partner in the JA at this point, but that doesn't mean I don't care. So here's what I'm wondering... in the absence of a new Jedi Knight game (c'mon Lucasarts, hook us up!), what can we do to keep the JA alive and thriving? Do we expand into other games? Do we simply exist the way were are as a "family" and accept that the training part is diminished as the game fade away a bit (let's be honest, it's been over 3 years since JK:JA came out)? Let me know what you think and how we can keep this place alive and keep the awesomeness that's been around for almost 4 years going well into the future.

Hell, even I might return for some JKII. I actually saw that game recently on sale (in case I cannot find my original CDs).

Return of the Belouve grandmaster? It could happen. I'd have fun as one of the oldbies.

Sounds awesome. My biggest regret is that despite owning it from release i never found this place while i was playing JKII. Ok well it would be greatly appreciated if any of the more experienced JKII players could offer some advice/a class etc.

I'm actually really beginning to like this idea a lot, it sounds like a great start in giving the students and members of the JA as a whole something fresh, i'm with Majno, i think (even if only for a limited time) that TJA should run only JKII servers, call it nostalgia week or something, if the staff arrange a tournement and some other events, and build it up abit, i'm sure newer members will be interested. :)

I'm always up for some JKII. Hell if someone offered i'd load up JK1!

So yeah sign me up.

As long as its not 'really-oldbie's' only or something.

Edit: Although saying that, if enough oldbies were interested/had enough time, could they not give some crash courses in how to get the most out of JKII to some of the newer members who never played it when it came out?

It's hard to keep yourself entertained by yourself on a server without bots or anything. Especially without like /amterminator to let me rig up ridiculous mine fields....man I miss running that pyro class.

But yeah I'd volunteer to be one of the poster-children for this JK2 resurgence movement. Someone with photoshop skills should rip off like World War I or II propaganda posters and make a "Say no to multiple saber types. Say yes to Silk and Shang Chi" or something. If nothing else, (fake) propaganda would amuse me.

The saber system is more fluid, but my primary saber type isn't there as well. ALL saber types have their flaws in JK:JA. There is a JK2 server still up, but I've never seen anyone on it. If you guys want to start a shift back to JK2, then get on that server

All we need to do is start a group calling for the resurgence of JK2. It's too easy. If we get a fairly large group going, that play actively, some of the people who got jk:ja will check it out slowly, and it will be like a snowball effect. It always works, you just have to have the right ingredients.

JK2 is great, the saber system in itself is superior to jk:ja. I don't think there is much of an argument there. It's balanced, it makes sense, etc. Compared to the new system which is full of bugs, hitboxes that are totally outrageous, and the unbalanced FIASCO that has come about due to the addition of the 2 new saber types without due consideration.

We need great people. People that others will follow. That's also easy, because the JA is FULL of great people.

Also, a way of making people see past the silly "dual saber and staffing" eye candy, the vehicles that kindof suck a bit, the not so much better graphics, and I think we will be well on our way.

Now, the last and most important thing. We have to enshroud our new group with an air of mystique, eliteness. Just general "i want to be there" cool stuff. This is the trickiest part, generally because you don't want to come off as arrogant, and you definatly don't want the council to have an misgivings at the start. Your first actions are crucial, as they say "first impressions are lasting impressions."

I think once people see the light, jk:ja will completely fall of the scene. There won't be a need for it anymore, because the truth is, the neat little goodies that it brought with it, just arent worth tolerating the CRAP that is jk:ja.

So who's with me?

Right on aph3x!

How about that really, switch back to JK JO on the servs, get some 50 skin skinpack and sabers n whatnot, and bring back what probably got most of the veterans here to join this community.

Maybe start a petition, see who's game..:)

And if that worked, maybe even get Virtue to convert the V3 Academy map to JK JO.

I'd say its food for thought. :P

We could try restarting the JA CS clan, everyone knows what CS is, and its (was) free and has low system specs. almost everyone can play it.

It was the community, not just the jkjo/jkja games that made people come here.

I'd support a Class Reunion. I'd even try to find my JK2 CD. Or barring that, go get a new one for like $5 at WalMart. I remember there was Virtue's secret project that he was recruiting for (and I was a part of) and it seemed like the kind of idea that would be just what we needed. I guess more than anything is commitment to do SOMETHING often and well.

Bring back the old JK2 maps

I highly agree with the statement that the community won't get anywhere because the game's fun-value is depreciated as time goes on. No one wants to play a game that loses its fun-value, and seeing as this is a community that focuses mainly on that game, it won't get very far from here.

I felt that the community really started to die down when there was the revamp deal about a year ago or so, and the most of the staff, JAK/JAT, were dropped because of inactivity or so and then the decision came to look for new blood. The problem with that was there was only about 5 JAK's and 5 JAT's and still, there are only the same number, give or take along the way. With that, the symbol of the Jedi Academy has been beat down a bit, with hardly any Jedi Masters or Knights to match the amount of students there were. So the classes list was much less as well, I remember there used to be about 45 classes per week. Now, there's only 17. I'm not trying to put this off as the biggest reason this place has died down, it's also the inactivity from the higher-ups from what I've seen that has been killing it slowly.

The game just isn't worth the time anymore, without the influx of new students and rejuvenated interest from them, it's just going to be the same thing over and over, and that gets boring.

I agree with some of the sentiments expressed...

The inherrent problem is that the game is only getting older. Without a new game there will be less and less players, as we can all burn out.

I think growing to expand to other games is a viable solution, that way you have a larger user base, but the flipside is that the administration becomes more of a chore and a larger animal to feed. I'm sure that any staff here can attest to that.

I honestly like the speciality of this site and prefer it to stay dedicated to just this series.

I also like the idea of having "reunion" days/events where old maps are featured, old events take place, etc.

Perhaps an opt-out event email list could be made. All users in the membership would receive it the first time, and then could have the option to opt-out.

This would notify everyone of events taking place for that month, which would help bring people out of the woodwork to keep this place going. Perhaps that would periodically refresh the cycle of interest. Just my .02

Yeah it would be awesome if a new game came along now wouldn't it? It'd definately shake off this "game is dead oh noes!" feeling, that's for sure. Heh.

Still, the option of moving toward others games is very real though I'm not exactly sure where anybody would want to go. Maybe a long time ago SWG might have been interesting but number one: Who want's to pay? Then there's number two: Who wants to pay for a rapidly deteriorating game with retarded patches and "fixes" that the devs keep dropping on the community to make 'em angry. XD

Simply bringin' more life into this place like in the old days would be a real task though. I'm not sure just how you could accomplish something like that, because that "Golden Era" was something truly special. I'm not exactly sure what happened though. Things just seemed to kinda slow down, didn't it? I miss all the old folks too. Since I started in '02 I've always been more of a server-goer rather than appearing in the forums or IRC (probably why I'm not so well-known) and it was kinda depressing for a while being the only guy on the server for hours at a time waiting for somebody to show up. It kinda makes ya feel like an abandoned puppy waiting for someone to pick it up, sad as that sounds. Ha ha ha!

Still, if something comes along to freshen things up I'd gladly make the effort to jump right in and be a part of it. Living all the way over in Japan don't really help with the time schedule, and seein' as how I'm shipping off to boot camp soon I'm not sure what I can do but...y'know. It's the thought that counts? XP

I know most of you don't check up on the JAA (Jedi Academy Aurochs), but we've bounced back from a rough time and are now a force to be reckoned with within the competitive community. TFFAs and CTFs are frequently going on at Jaktorow (the JAA's Euro server).

Considering the JAA is part of the JA, any JA members can drop by there! The server password can be obtained by just asking one of the JAA members on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) by joining the #ja-aurochs channel. If you aren't familiar with IRC, you can just simply click this link which will open up a chat applet.

The JAA servers can sometimes have matches going on, so at those times, we will notify you that you will have to wait an hour or so, but for the majority of the time, the servers are open!

You'll not only meet fellow JA members and Aurochs, but you will also be able to play with some skilled players from JKA clans.

I like the comments so far... we're getting some good ideas and can hopefully find ways to work some of the ideas in.

I do agree with aph3x though... "The Golden Era" was just amazing, friendly, busy, sometimes more of a headache than it was worth (anyone who was around when JumpinJedi was on his worst behavior knows what I'm talking about), but all in all it was amazing. The bowing that people did before duels was just a perfect example of the respect we had for everyone. I don't think there was anything DJ and I could've done beyond A) pimping the site out (and believe me, we got a lot of offers for advertising, for groups to join us, but all of them would've negated the good we've done) or B) trying to make money on it, which LucasArts would've swiftly and violently crushed. The JK2 really was an anomaly, but an anomaly only in that we took a great idea at the perfect time (back when the market wasn't flooded with games and a AAA game like JK2 could stand out and get a HUGE audience) and made it work.

That said, don't think by making this thread that we're thinking of closing up shop. We aren't. This place will be open until everyone leaves, no one chats on IRC, and our servers sit gaining dust for days and weeks on end. I don't see that happening (even the servers seem to get a little use still).
