What do *you* want to see from the JA? | |

For those who have been hiding in a hole for the last 4 years, the Jedi Knight series is dead. We will keep hosting JK3 servers for the forseeable future, but there is no denying that JK3 has run its course, and there is no JK4 on the horizon.
The Force Unleashed is not the game we have been waiting for. Holding out for JK4 would be foolish optimism at this point. This leaves us with a problem - where do we go from here? I'm throwing this out to the community. This will be in no way binding or indicative of what we will do, but I *do* want to gather feedback from you guys. What do you want to see from us? - a SWGEmu server? - a TOR (The Old Republic) community? Any, and all, *sensible* suggestions will be considered. Post with your ideas and reasoning. Be as thorough as you can. _______________ Joined 16 October 2004 | Retired 10 April 2005 | Returned 05 June 2008 | Made Staff 27 June 2008 | Made Council 18 January 2009 Padawan To Odan-Wei Belouve | Adopted into the Belouve family | Twin to xAnAtOs | Owner of the 4th Quesi sexy badge Brother To Roan Belouve, Nomad, Majno, Silkmonkey, Kensei and Jarhok Belouve Owner Of Virtue's 1000th profile comment, Mr. Doobie's 1000th profile comment, Gradius' 2500th comment, xAnAtOs' 2500th comment, Rosered's 1500th comment, Laziana's 900th comment, Scythus' 500th comment and Echuu's 100th comment |

If TOR will have anything similar to organized raiding, then I think we should definitely make a guild in the more exclusive sense, run in parallel to the sort of more inclusive community/group that the JA is right now. That is, something administered by the JA and for which people from within the JA can tryout for, get admitted if they fulfill certain requirements and then be able to participate in organized PvP or raiding within said guild. _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here! Which is why I was curious - an available (but not mandatory) resource within TOR would make perfect sense in terms of everything this place has ever represented. Which, by the way, is good to still see in existence...long, long after I 'retired' myself. _______________ http://steamcommunity.com/id/citizen059 |

I think that people are worried that we will become a private clan/guild that does our own stuff and doesn't care about anyone outside of it and has all of the perks only for people in the guild.
There will be no clan though; a guild would merely serve to help players communicate, hang out and get started and learn the game and it wouldn't be required to be in the guild at all, if there was one. Everything you could do in the guild would be possible even if you're in another guild. All that really matters is you're a part of the community/group/friends; that's pretty much how the academy has always worked. |

No matter what route we take, we should always have at least a JKA server up because it is where this group began (series at least).
A guild/clan/etc is also a bad idea. SWTOR will be a good addition to this community for sure as a main game, but I'm not going to let go of JKA so fast. As a previous poster said, the "virtual hangout" of JKA has mostly disappeared. Even so, it's still fun when people get on and play. I do not, however, agree with the same server setup we had before. It was a huge waste to have so many servers. Realistically, there should be only two: - thejediacademy.net | Europe - thejediacademy.net | USA have the same plain basejka configuration as we do now on both. Less servers, no hassel, only 2 IPs to know, and it'll be more close together. Other games may even boost JKA. |

We don't really have a problem getting new members - people join all the time.
They just don't stay because the activity here is so low. |

Have you guys tried advertising on the Steam community forums?
JK2 and JK3 are still being sold via Steam (at about $10 each, less if bought as part of the Star Wars collection) and from a glance it looks like there IS some activity on the forums...some of it from people looking for places to play. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=718 _______________ http://steamcommunity.com/id/citizen059 |

as for my 2 cents...
1st priority should be to keep JK3 running with at least one european and one american server. the more, the merrier of course. but i do not think we will need as many as we had in the past, basically because i think the activity will never be as good as it once was. but i still find people every now and then who might be interested in the game and just get frustrated on public servers - the JA still has a purpose. Even though the times of 12-13 people showing up at a basic saber class are long over... i think that we can and must branch out though. the interest in jk3 is weakening as in every game that ages, although it can still catch the interest and attention of people. the big plus for jk3 is, imho, that nowadays every computer is able to run it decently. as for branching out, i think that TOR MIGHT be a chance, but i am not too sure how the MMO style will impact the community as a whole. i am not informed enough about the current state of the game, but if we would do something TOR related, i think we have to create some group or guild or whatnot. i know we never intended to be a clan, but we need some sort of connection in-game with each other - i do not know how TOR will handle groups and guilds and whatnot. maybe with a new game like TOR activity will rise alot on the forums, the IRC channel and on teamspeak. i just don't want to abandon jk3 or make it so a sideline or just a shadow of the new TOR business, have a bit too much heart attached to it to simply forsake it for something new. cheers, - Laz _______________ Proud owner of Buster Senatu's 200th & 300th, Muro's 370th, Maher's 2100th, Henkes' 1639th, Johauna's 400th, 666th and 900th, Sho Koon's 2000th and Kain Sol's 600th comment Download Laziana's lightsaber here! I'm not necessarily opposed to a guild. Nobody essentially has to join it and I am sure this is a value we all share here. Whatever your guild or affiliation we'll always help.
We would probably have a community on this site that meets up and works together and does things together and trains and we could find some places in the game to train regularly. Would we play on one or multiple servers I don't know... A guild could sort of act as a JA server. People might choose to join the guild for a peaceful and helpful environment to train in. Anyone who doesn't want to join the guild doesn't have to and can always still train and learn with us. At the very least a guild would be effective for AT LEAST the staff members to communicate. I know that in SWG there are many, many guilds that will always help whatever guild you are in and are more communities that try to help everyone, not just their guild members. Also in SWG you can setup chat channels allowing people in various different guilds to communicate in one chat channel. There are also player cities that can be used across various different guilds. Will there be these features or other features that support cross-guild communication, who knows but whatever there is, if we move to TOR we'll be sure to take advantage of it. I'm inclined to agree but will reserve judgment until I experience the game. An MMO is a different environment. There are going to be player ships--I don't know whether you can invite other players into your ship or not. Perhaps each guild will have its own housing or base or ship or something. I really miss the "virtual hangout" of the old JK2 map. Even if we all play on the same server, it won't really be a community to me if we don't actually do stuff together. If a JA guild helps to facilitate that I'd be all for it. If a JA guild would just be a tag by our names, meh. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

I don't think that we should bother with SWGEmu. SWGEmu is pretty popular and those emulators are pretty good by now, but I don't think it's what we should focus on. I think we need to focus on other and also newer games (and less controversial games; I don't think it's so good for the academy's reputation to be playing with the emulators that have just barely managed to survive legally). Also we are here to help people out in Star Wars games; chances are most of the people playing SWGEmu are old SWG Vets that know what they are doing so the game wouldn't be all that new.
We won't ever abandon the Jedi Knight series games but we may support and increase emphasis on other games, such as TOR, which I believe has a lot of support here. |

swgemu will never be at the level that could be played like a normal game.
swtor... well... im not really exited about it. i was waiting for gw2 more even before the whole gw2 hype... and ill keep it that way. my opinion - star wars is dead for now. :/ i guess swtor is the way to go... tho u wont have the ugly noob rodian in your community. i just hope that if some day jk4 comes out... you guys wont be addicted to swtor and drop it IMMEDIATELY. _______________ playing jk3 since 30th of january (2005), member since 1st of february. SWTOR is looking to be an exciting and refreshing game that will immerse us in the Star Wars galaxy. I feel that SWGEmu, which I played for a few months, is still progressing slowly. While there's no clear indication that it is not legal, there's the possibility of some legal problems in the future, never know. SWG in general is a pretty outdated game too. There's only so much you can do in SWG until it becomes the same thing over and over again. It's sandbox nature is definitely unique and allows players to control the way they want to play, but in terms of actual content, it is rather limited. I think TOR will be a better fit for us. We'll just need to coordinate which server to play on and set up a guild on there if there's enough interest. Since it is a MMO, we could start working towards that style of game play for those that do not play MMOs that much.
I will most likely be playing TOR and would like to play it with a community I know. I've been into MMOs for quite some time, mainly the free ones like LOTRO currently, and am willing to help out wherever. _______________ "Do or do not, there is no try" Jedi Master Yoda Dual Saberist |

My time in the JA is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, period, end of sentence.
I'm looking forward to what Bioware has to offer with TOR, and if there was a JA presence there, I'd certainly want to be a part of it. SWG - not so much. _______________ http://steamcommunity.com/id/citizen059 |

My 2c:
The JA has something to offer now in it's current state. We have the site where people post on each others profiles, and occasionally in forum threads. There's still an official IRC chat room where people just kinda idle, but have the option to chat if they want. It's still a community, a central hub for people with a common interest in Star Wars and gaming. This will always be at it's core. That is not to say I am against change. Certainly the Jedi Knight series of games isn't as relevant as it was 5+ years ago. I foresee a lot of members giving the TOR MMO a go, so agreeing on a server where JA members should roll if they are interested in playing together is a good idea. It's more fun to play with people you know. The only kink might be the fact Euro and American servers will probably be independent of each other, so that would split the community in two. However that doesn't mean we shouldn't have an official JA TOR realm, just that we would need to choose one for each region. And Euro/Americans will have to still come to these forums to debate hot topics. (lol?) I would of course be against the idea of any sort of official JA guild. We were never a clan. People can and will naturally form their own groups, or simply join a guild which is relevant to them. The idea of a SWGemu server is interesting, but two issues bother me about it: 1) The legal right to host a server 2) The resources required to run the server decently I don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject so I'll leave it there for now. What else? Well the site could use an upgrade (I think this was already mentioned some time ago) and in the mean time a little maintenance wouldn't go astray. For example as I type this I am struck by the irrelevance of the JARadio icon which I believe hasn't been on air for over 4 years. It'd be nice to keep a couple of jk2/jk3 servers running for nostalgia's sake. It pays homage to our origins, think of it like a plaque if you will. We will never recreate the super active days of back to back classes, not being able to get on the home server because it's full, standing in line to duel the 'king of the mat' in our winner stays on style governed only by our human code of honour rather than a machine enforced code. But it's still nice to swing an imaginary glowy stick at someone else's pixels every now and then. _______________ A wizard did it. |

I haven't been very active for a long time, but I have to say that JA still has a special place in my heart. Okay, the JK series is dead (for now?), but I'd like to see this community stay alive.
I'm really pumped about SWTORO and would love to see us pick a server that would be "the" server for JA people to play on. I think it would do a lot to bring the community together. One of the things I think is exciting about SWTORO is that the combat animations are synchronized. It's not like wow where each combatant does a separate animation, but rather when two (or three or four!) combatants clash, lightsabres actually collide and block each other. When a Jedi blocks a blaster bolt, the sabre actually blocks the blaster bolt. How cool is that? 3d environments have come a long way, and there's a part of me that hopes that in five or ten years (good Lord, I'll be in my fifties in ten years) there will be a JK4 that harnesses this technology, maybe brings back some of the Magic I felt with JK2, with the added bonus of the new features. (A little tidbit: My WoW guild is called Knights of Exile. It was founded by people who left SWG after they felt the game was ruined, so they exiled themselves to another MMO. We're all planning to play SWTORO when it comes out.) I really miss the long nights of us all hanging out in the Matrix room (remember?) in JK2, seeing how long we could keep our place on the mat. It was at least as cool as any hangout in the "real" world, and so were the people. SWTORO will be a very different environment, but it would be awesome for us all to come together in it. Okay, I'm done pouring my heart out. [edit: spelling and sentence clarity fixes] _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. I'd say TOR, a new game which could breathe life in to the community with a massive fan base will see activity sky rocket again.
In the distant future I do see myself working on a Star Wars source mod, I'm just finishing up learning C++ for the source engine so it'll probably be in the later part of my university degree. A fairly good possibility but not going to happen for a year or maybe two. But as I said, TOR would be my bet, we can hold on to the JK3 servers till then I'm sure. On the upside of using TOR we won't have to worry about funds except in the case of keeping the site running and the TS server going. |

I think tor could widen the number of regular players at TJA, and I think it would be better to advance rather than go back to an older game like swg. SWGemu server is in short a private owned swg server xP, swg = star wars galaxies, emu = emulator (i guess)
dunno if the SWGemu is done, as far i know its still beta testing and that what they been doing these couple of years now Imo if i had 2 pick one i would like to see TOR, it would prolly bring back some ppl here =) and have more activity than swg. _______________ "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
