So does anyone have any plans at all about increasing activity, even if its on a small scale. I have ideas but want to know what everyone is thinking.

yes mike, I do understand you. we do not want to force activity. we just look for ways to increase it by utilizing the full available potential.
when people who would want to play know how the activity cycle works (aka idling a bit), then they will even join an empty server and wait instead of just leaving it be or looking for some public duel server. i totally see where you are coming from because the gameplay itself has become a bit stale for me myself, the taste is not as sweet as it used to be. maybe it was never actually sweet, but the environment (aka the people and the activity) around it still makes it worthwhile to spend a few hours per week on the server. even if you just use it as jedi chatroom. i have been on for a couple of hours yesterday and did not fight a single duel. i had fun talking and doing JA radio without having any doubt that my time was spent right at this time and place. also these threads are for people who would play the game but have that "meh" factor to it, as nobody is carrying them from their couch to a full server with lots of people, etc. those times are over and will never come back for a game like jk3. and when i look at the same bunch of core people who keep the active serverside part of TJA alive for a long time now, i can just admire them (you know who you few pplz are). _______________ Proud owner of Buster Senatu's 200th & 300th, Muro's 370th, Maher's 2100th, Henkes' 1639th, Johauna's 400th, 666th and 900th, Sho Koon's 2000th and Kain Sol's 600th comment Download Laziana's lightsaber here! The point of this thread was merely to see if people had any ideas for activity. You are right Mike, in 12 months hopefully we will have a albeit alternative lease of life, who as a caveat might bring more people to play JKA. But as it stands for those people who don't want to play, that's fine, don't. However the idea behind the idling experiment was aimed at those people who are not prepared to come online when the servers are empty, but when there are people online and they see that, its a bit of encouragement for the more tentative or.. dare I say it lazier people who will only come on when there is activity on the servers. _______________ <MaherSenatu> guh... you are just... You've totally missed my point, but maybe I'm not clear enough and if that's the case I apologise. Here's what I'm trying to say:
Not everyone wants to play JKA anymore. The people who want to play will play. If there's nobody on the servers, it's because they don't want to. You can't force people to play JKA if they don't want to. Activity around here will be the way it is until we have a new game to play. In 12 months time (Less than that, even) this place will be a hive of activity once again, and hopefully the influx of TOR players will gravitate a little towards JKA as I'm absolutely certain that we'll be maintaining JKA support. These threads are fine but it does smack a little bit of "GET AWAY FROM THE NINTENDO, I WANT TO PLAY LEGO!" |
Laziana - Jedi Instructor |
This threads about raising activity are targeted at people who actually still WANT to play the game.
People who do not want to play will not play, no matter how good activity ideas are. While I understand the point of view of the "not interested" I want you all to repsect the views of the people who still want to play the game. Posting everytime that JKA is dead is nice but still personal opinion - mostly from people who do not care about the game anymore. Those who do care about the game know very well that the game is not dead and as long as there is a single server online people have the chance to play and create activity. So I guess it's better for all of us if the interested post here and the not interested don't. This should not sound like a STFU, I just think that if you are not interested anyway, why bother posting on activity threads? _______________ Proud owner of Buster Senatu's 200th & 300th, Muro's 370th, Maher's 2100th, Henkes' 1639th, Johauna's 400th, 666th and 900th, Sho Koon's 2000th and Kain Sol's 600th comment Download Laziana's lightsaber here! Of course, the graphics arn't as good as current games. However, it's still good for how old it is. Dust of the ol' lightsaber Monteeee pop on, for sh*ts and gigs. Again, people like Monty, myself and many others have been playing JKO/JKA for nearly a decade. I think we need to establish that these constant "activity idea" threads, while noble in intention, are not going to convince people who have beaten the absolute hell out of that game. Let's just hold tight until autumn (or fall, for you silly yanks!) when TOR is set loose and things will really pick up here. In the meantime, accept that it isn't 2003 anymore. |

I didn't specify star wars, withthe success of games like call of duty etc .. WhIch honestly I'm not a huge an of, I've moved over to more rts style games. But with games like black ops etc... And magika, dragon age etc ... People are not gonna wanna sit and wait for people to join a sever etc....
Don't get me wrong Jk2 was amazing online, jk3 personally I thought took a major step back. But unfortunately nostalgia isn't enough to save games anymore as games become more fast paced and more complex the older games just don't hold up to the newer ones. I'll be the first to buy jk4 if it ever came out but I feel that boat has sailed and lucusarts are pressing forward in other directions. _______________ If you add me to MSN, tell me who you are Best Movie Character EVER!! |

To be honest, standards have dropped. TFU was a terrible adaptation of star wars and was all eye candy with some physics thrown in. JK2/3 beats it every time, imo. |

It's directed at the people who complain about there being no activity, yet they haven't bothered to check servers or even install JKA. It's not aimed at people who don't want to play. |

If only it would work like that. We have to demonstrate value. Why did people uninstall in the first place, people have to start looking at the bigger picture, and contributing valuable ideas rather than stating the obvious and sitting there and hoping for activity. as i said, setup windowed mode, do something else in the meantime and then when people join enjoy some jk3@tja I suggested this before in a thread, which seems to have been deleted, when the site was hacked. I suggested that those active student take it in turn to idle on the servers so that when people look at the servers with whatever program they are using and they see that there is activity they jump on too, creating something similar to snowball effect. However I remember at the time the idea was unfortunately “poo-poo’d†as it would require people to be online when obviously they have other stuff to be getting on with in their RL. Personally I wish I hadn’t gone along with “well if you say so, then this probably isn’t a good idea†because some of the best things that have come from the academy have come from the hard work and dedication that the students have put in. We are all in not doubt that the unfortunately despite the continuing trickle of active players, this game is struggling. However if you go on the some of the Public servers, there are still active servers, frequently hitting full capacity. Also in the past, we have asked about making a server public, and I don’t know if it is the case at the moment since the servers have been re-located as previously it wasn’t feasible. However I still maintain that having a public server (if at all possible) would bring newer members into the game and into this academy. Of course I sound and feel like a hypocrite writing this now, as I have recently have 2 periods of inactivity stretching roughly 18 months. However the fact is that I came back, because this place is actually a laugh. Its fun to be here, (even though my GF would rather me be watching a film...) the people who play regularly are skilled enough to teach people any skills this wish to acquire, and besides. It’s a bit of fun, and everyone needs that now and again. Anyway, aside from the obvious, and previously discussed issues that the JKA game needs a complete overhaul, there should be some short term and more practical ideas which will tempt people back to the JA or simply to re-install, with it now being available to download on Steam it seems like there are options available. We just need to find a way of getting the website out there so that people will want to come to us or simply remember how much fun it was. I also have various other ideas whizzing about in this think box of mine, and will try and bring them to fruition of the next few weeks. Any ideas, feel free to post. I’m off for a cup of tea. Quote: the most important thing - IMHO - is that people need to re-install the game on their machines and just hop unto the servers.
i am guilty myself as i play very unregularly, but when i do i always meet quite a lot of people. even if the servers are empty at first. as always: connect to the servers and wait a bit. any modern machine can run jk3 in windowed mode with 120 fps. so just set it up, join a server and wait. watch some youtube movies or do whatever. you will see: 1 or 2 people will join. then while you have some fun duels or talk about past times, other people will join as well. and before you know it you will have 8 to 9 people on the servers. it doesnt even matter which day of the week it is. just get yourself together and join the servers. you do not even need to play. just hang around and have a good time. nobody cares about scores, wins and losses... just be there and take part in a community that is still nice and cool after all this time. cheerio, laz Usually that is the case, yeah. I hop on the JA Euro server and about 25% of the time someone will join me out of nowhere, and then before I know it 3 others are around. |

Ok, so I think we have covered a remake on the whole is needed, unfortunately, it seems like this may by a rather long way off, with the time, experience and expertise needed. Therefore if anyone can think of shorter terms solutions i'm sure we will all be very grateful. I will post my own ideas in due course. _______________ <MaherSenatu> guh... you are just... A remake is indeed the best option. We could do it in source, it has great mod support and a large developer community. I like source very much but on the other hand it's getting older. This is not really a problem since jka is still in Q3.
Unreal looks even cooler though. It is newer than source and looks nicer. It's getting a large developer community too. But maybe source will do. _______________ May the force be with you. And may the academy stand forever! |

I never said that activity was gone, or that it was "dead". I merely stated one of the reasons why activity has lowered, which it has.
A big problem is that the influx of new players is less now than it ever has been before. JK3 is getting outdated and regardless of how active its communities are, from the outside it seems old. This is not my point of view on JK3, it is merely an observation. My suggestion for creating a Jedi Knight-esque game was perhaps not stated clearly enough. I don't think making a sequel is a realistic option. I was learning more towards a remake/remodelling of JK3 than a totally new game. One that might look like a new game, but would still be JK3 underneath. Basically - Graphical overhaul (would involve tweaking the engine), animation and model improvements, improving the combat and enhanced server support. I'd have to look into this more before I could even suggest where to begin, and how many of those are even possible. Of course, there is always the option of getting a few programmers together and rebuilding the game in Source or Unreal. And as far as copyrighting goes, so long as we don't make profit or anything I think we can get away with it. We couldn't call it Jedi Knight or affiliate the game with anything Lucasartsey, but all that can be discussed at a point where we have enough people willing to do this. _______________ -Padawan of Virtue -Brother of Menaxia, *|irael, Krynn Adept, Majno, Ris Win Juljul, DaMi3N, Beowulf, Dash Starlight, Carrock and Yuken Zalak Bartender at Munes bar. Just a thought, but maybe actually playing the game instead of calling it dead will help activity |

I said it before but making jk4 ourselves isn't a bad idea. I know some C++. We got to be realistic though, it would take a long time and will be hard but it isn't impossible. _______________ May the force be with you. And may the academy stand forever! |

Quote: Sounds like a wonderful project Gents :-)
Oh hai. Yeah, I've been tinkering around with other game engines recently. Source and the UDK mostly. I think the first step to making any kind of new Jedi Knight homage is to first decide on what engine we will use. Rebuilding the game over the top of its current engine (Quake 3). - This is the simplest and probably fastest method but its also fairly limited. It's also outdated compared to other options at the moment. Rebuilding the game in Source Rebuilding the game in the Unreal Development Kit Constructing (or combining multiple open source components) our own engine from the ground up for the purpose of Jedi Knight. I'll work on pluses and minuses for the other options when I'm not sleep deprived. I'll also re-read Majnos epic text wall then too! xD Nice to see you still around Jai. EDIT: Also as a seperate note. If you reckon anyone would actually be interested in some beginner level design classes I'd be more than glad to set something up. Perhaps a trial run is in order. I'll whack together a lesson plan just in case. _______________ -Padawan of Virtue -Brother of Menaxia, *|irael, Krynn Adept, Majno, Ris Win Juljul, DaMi3N, Beowulf, Dash Starlight, Carrock and Yuken Zalak Bartender at Munes bar.
