Evening all!
I'm considering reinstalling JK3 for one last blast before The Old Republic is released and I know a lot of you are also going to move on to this game, but seeing as that might be a while I don't see why we don't make the most of this game while it's still alive. I looked on the server page and I noticed we have 10 different dedicated servers for Jedi Knight 3 alone, which is probably more than we ever had during peak activity! My idea, if it hasn't already been considered, is to just use one server for the game. While this sounds like a dramatic overhaul I think it would be beneficial to both the council (less server costs) and the players. My reasoning is there is too sparse an active playerbase in the academy to stretch over ten servers; last time I was active I eventually gave up as the Euro servers stayed empty for days. I also think people are less likely to play on 1 empty server out of 10, whereas if there was just one server it would have more people monitoring it, and easier to get it filled with players. Far be it from me to impose how things should be done around here, but it's a shame to see the community fading away especially considering the ambivalence towards SW:TOR on here.  Ever since I joined - which was October 2006 - we almost always had european servers and also the majority of players (in my free zime which is GMT evenings) were hanging out on euro servers. I'd never thought about the public server idea, but it could see a recruitment increase if it's not already too late for that. 1 public and 1 private would be interesting but I don't know how a public server would be received by the other JK3 users, and would be hard to moderate. Like Dark said, we do not have all that servers that are listed. We are currently pretty limited as it is in terms of servers anyway. So all that actually needs to be done is to clear out the list. 1 EU, 1 USA and 1 public is not "too much" per se. Problem with just 1 public server (especially if you want to have basejk3) is the vulnerability to hacks and difficulty to admin in a good way. on basejk3 you can kick and ban whilst other mods would offer more admin ability which is clearly needed to maintain a good ammount of order on a public server. The Jedi Academy always has been a "private" community, meaning that you have to be a member to play on the Academy's servers. We CAN change that and offer a public server only, but not with basejk3. The public server should be more like a teaser, a trailer to inhale the atmosphere of the Academy to ultimately make people sign up and play on our private servers. Those can be basejk3, no problem. But overall I think we are not doing too bad. We just need a bit more sparkles of interests. Things that make people want to return to the game. Obviously what worked good in the past were the classes, but not enough people regularly enough to have a trainer run a class steadily. Encountering dozens of no-shows is not good for anyone's motivation. Furthermore I still do not believe that SWTOR will be the savior of any problems. The older community members might return, yes. But another big ammount of people will probably never touch SWTOR, as it is not their cup of tea. There is no replacement game to JK3 at the moment, so if you are not just here for the pplz only, but for the game as well, you will not find much alternatives out there in the interwebs. Eica, I couldn't agree more. Like you, it isn't up to me to tell people how to run the JA, but I think you're on to something here.
Now this may be a dramatic overhaul, but here's my idea: According to me, we should have *1* server so everyone is forced to play together on one. This server should be *public* so that it is reachable by people who aren't members. So that they can easily join the server, maybe like what they see and learn, and then decide to sign up. (We have to make sure becoming a member is somehow beneficial then, like the ability to sign up for classes or become someone's padawan.) Finally, it should have *base* gameplay because this is what we train people in and play on. Better yet, we should really change to support TOR and become like a guild in my mind. If we stay behind focussing primarily on JKA, I expect we get 'left behind' and die out.
