Why does "noob" have to be an insult??

People are going around calling others noobs. while dueling, i've noticed that some of you out there when you cannot defend against a certain technique or don't like a certain style, you immediately pull out your extensive vocabulary of insults and start with "noob" and "lamer". you people are not only being rude to the people you are calling that but also to actual newbies. by calling someone a noob you would imply that being new is in some way a negative thing. which to me only shows how "mature" you really are. just a thought...

I agre completly, n00b should not be used in anyway but the reason it is meant. Being new is not a bad thing, in fact i miss being a n00b. So guys plz dont isolate the new ppl and make them feel bad by using the term in slander.

Well said Bubu:) I totally agree with you. Since the prime objective of the Academy is trainning it's normal to see people new to JKA thus with less skills. I'm sure YY,WW,Virtue,Luke all start somewhere......and at that time they were.....

So be careful of the person you call n00b cause over the time you may have your ass kicked by that same person and who will be the n00b after that???

There was a recent incident where someone eledgedly called someone else a n00b, and he had a hissy fit and started kicking and sabering. My thoughts? If someone's low enough to use n00b as an insult then don't give them gratification like retaliating, feel sorry for 'em instead ;)

well, sometime i use the term "n00b", but always in a friendly way. like "hey, he's a n00b, go easy on him". generally you should treat new ones with a warm smile and help them, instead making fun of them.
those who call others "n00b" in an insulting way are just pathetic. they are everything they try to call the other one. lowering others to become big themselves is one of the lowest methods there are. sleep and silence those and let them lie in a corner, ignorated by everyone. after some time they have enough telling the wall how cool they are. ;)

Players call you a noob because they want you to be angry. Angry players lose, plain and simple. If they can get you all upset, they know you will play less than your best and take chances you normally wouldn't take to show off and prove you aren't a noob. Its an old chat tactic that's been around since the beginning of Internet gaming. However, in Jedi, it runs rampant. Just laugh, whether you are a newbie or not. Feel sorry for that person calling you it, that's what they need to win. Play the game on your own terms and with your own style. Showing off gets you killed.

Go to the MSN Zone sometime and just sit in the lobby, you'll see the insult noob so many times its ridiculous. Oh and Jacen, you forgot about their "Host Advantage" excuse as well. A lot of the guys that decide to insult players are also the ones that like to say they are 1337, own, pwn or any other silly little typo they think looks so cool. The people that I would consider noobs are what I like to call Pathetic Losers. They aren't neccessarily new to the game, just all around jerks and you aren't bashing actual newbies. These are also the likely people that were calling others noobs back in May, you know since they couldn't buy the game the first day it was out.

I don't think that anyone should be calling someone a noob on here since this is a place for new people to learn to play as well as enhance current skills. Now saying that you yourself are a newb is different. You're letting others know that you are new to the game and might not know a lot of the understood rules such as no console killing.

Name calling of any kind is dangerous to a place like the academy. Respect being the core of the rules here, calling someone anything shows disrespect to fellow students and the place in general.

If you have to call someone a noob or anything else because they defeated you in a match, then you've lost a great deal more than just the match.

Remember gang, the main point of the rules of the Academy are to show respect to the people you share the server with. Name calling takes away from somebody's fun, and ruins the enjoyment of the place for others.

Very good points guys. I've been around the the gaming world for a few years now and I can tell you that "n00b" is short for "newbye".

Witch means "new to the game" not bad at the game, for this, folks came up with the word "lamme".

For some reason some ppl like to offend others by calling them "n00bs". Well for those who don't know these kind of ppl lemme tell you abaut them.

They are the "Iluminati", the perfect ones. Those who borned mastering the game. These guys never were newbyes. They cant be beaten.
The only things that can beat these superior beings are lag (even if they have a 50 ping), dirty mouses, broken keyboards, cats jumping on their lap, pesky little brothers and of corse those whom they call "n00bs" and "lammes".

So Im sorry, if you are not a "n00b" or "lamme" you will never beat these kind of gaming god's. You can only hope for one of the other disasters that i mentioned to happend to get a win.

ehehhehe, J/K folks.

I have no problem in calling my self a n00b when i start playing a new game and I'm damn proud of it. And whenever I face a gamming god and he calls me "n00b" I take it as a compliment because it probably means that for at least 1 split second I was better than him and he is pissed abaut it.

Power to the n00bs.

okay.... I wrote some pretty good points here, but the textbox ate it somehow...:eek: kinda like in the console when you press space, and it will just delete any text behind the cursor... weird... anyway, to sum it up;

*Don't call people n00bs... At least not here... I think it makes for an uncomfortable atmosphere, when people starts calling each other names. Fighting them is actually very good counter practise. If you just spend enough time concentrating on getting those counters in, the other guy will think: "hey, this guy can counter my move... better try something else". and then you have a fight again. most times, it's actually as easy as that. especially in nf duels, wich is what we see the most here in the academy. all of this basically bases itself on one of the more important rules here at the academy: be respectful towards everyone, even people lower than you. (or something like that anyway)

and I'll say it again: beware the text-eating textbox!!!!!!!

the problem with that reasoning is that sometimes the two sides can have different definitions for the same word. if you (assuming you're white) come up to a black person and say: "hey what up nigga?" that person would probably cut you to pieces, although you meant it in a "good" way. all i want to say, i guess, is please think before you say anything. often times the greatest fights errupt from just a few words.

I do not believe it is just to define "noob" by lightsaber skills. I judge people on ACTING like a noob. Ie. if someone typekills me, or lames me, i define them as noobs, as they do not have the HONOUR to fight like they should. This game is based on Star Wars, and the ways of a Jedi involve honour, unlike games like Quake, CS, whatever. If people dont like this little "role-playing" aspect of the game, i think they should be off to bunny hop in CS.

I use the word "newbie" in a "good" way. Everyone starts out as a "newbie" in this game. But "n00b" is something different for me.

Words can be used in many ways. Black people can say "nigga" to their friends in a "good" way, but if it comes from the mouth of a white person, it often means something else.

Thats just my point of view.
