So, here looks like a nice place to set up for a community mapping discussion Better go grab those tent poles... _______________ ««¤¤¤{{PREÅÐÅT¤R ka¦¦ata'n}}¤¤¤»» Founder of RSPCT (The Royal Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Toasters) |

I'm guessing here, since I haven't done it. I believe what you do is make a "dome" shaped window. Then there is a texture with the window bars on it that you apply to the surface. I beleive that will do the trick. _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

Yeah the junk text never did give me a number. That's ok though, the map is finished, a few of the guys have seen it. _______________ Death is only the beginning. |
Kytor - Student |
Also, if the junk text gives you a number for the brush that has the error, right down the number. Then, go to misc (on the toolbar menu thing), find brush. enter in the number, click find, and the brush should be selected. Then you can do whatever you want with it.

I'll keep that in mind for next time, thanks dude. I ended up deleting the entire map in favor of a new layout. I think this will be better. _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

This is a pain, but it's the quickest way I've found to pin down a "problem child" brush in a map. First, you must know how to set the Region in your map. If you don't, read up on it and come back.
Next, select half of your map and set that to the active Region. Compile using fastvis, nolight. Did you get the error? If yes, cut the region in half and compile again. If no, deselect everything in the map, then click the "i" key. This inverts the selection in the region in which you're working, meaning everything selected becomes unselected while everything unselected (everything in this case) becomes selected. Now click Region->Off. The entire map becomes visible again, and the Region you were looking at is selected. Click "i" again to invert the selection, then select Region->Set Selected Brushes. Now your Region is set to the half of the map that you didn't compile before. Since you didn't get the error in the first half of the map you compiled, it must be here. Narrow down the Region to half of this and compile. Every time you compile a region and get the error, you're closing in on a problem brush. Keep cutting regions in half and compiling one half to see if that's where the problem is. Programmers call this a binary search. Obviously you should be most suspicious of the parts you've edited most recently. I know this is a pain, but I've found it useful. Sometimes I find it faster not to bother finding the exact problem brush; instead I just narrow it down to a small enough "problem region" that I can just delete that region and remake it from scratch in less time than it would take to track down and debug the exact brush causing the problem. After just eight iterations of this process you'll have cornered the problem brush in a region just 1/255th the total size of your map. Hope this helps. Ah ok, thanks Corran.
Now onto my latest problem. The compile process is reporting to me that 4 of my brushes have duplicate planes. I can't figure out how, and have no idea how to find them. Any idea how to find them without deleting an entire section of the map and starting over? _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

heh, Kalheka, I didnt see your post till just now. I guess I should be more observatnt
I'm sorry about the -1 not working. That changes some thoughts about some of my maps as well. Now, if you want, heres some knowledge on the engine workings, in response to your question (which was probably retorical, but I feel like answering it anyway) You asked why they changed multiplayer so much from single player. In actuality, the multiplayer engine was not changed much from the previous engine used in a past game. It was the single player engine that was heavily modified, and many things were added to it. So, you could actually be glad that they added toggle doors to single player, instead of dissapointed that they didnt add it to multiplayer. (believe me though, i'm dissapointed that they didnt add it in MP too) Vaughn, all I can say until I think of something else is- keep trying different things. yes. Lets just say, GTK radiant hates my computer more than jkradiant. When it cant load the fonts, it asks to change the preferences... the thing stops responding. its REALLY ANNOYING GRR...

You're beginning to leave my area of knowledge...
I would think that quake III would have a similar set up to JK II's. but if you say it doesn't work, then you might have to try something else. I've thought about doing this, but I never got around to it. try copying all of the textures, and put them in their respective folders in the 'texture' folder in base. Then, when textureing in gmax, use the texures from those folders. I THINK that will cause the game to reconize the textures when you use the map. But I don't know for sure. edit: I just thought of something Have you tried switching to GTK radiant? _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! im looking for the temptest plugin, but as blind as i am, i cant find it any idea's (i looked @ gmaxes site, not there, im looking through google.ca, and i havent found it. But i have found the temptest mod for gmax, not plugin... does that matter?)
Edit: I found it, now, my problem is, the tutorial i have is for quake III, and it doesnt seem to work for JK2 (shaders, etc), do you know where i can find this stuff? and i apologize for taking over this thread, very sorry all _______________ When you become an actor, you become the person, and you dont act anymore. actually, supposedly you CAN map in gmax. Just make sure you get the TEMPEST plug in, or you wont be able to create a .map file (or .md3's and stuff like that) _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! No go on the door setting. Setting to -1 acts just like setting the wait to 0, it returns immediately. Damn that messes up my plans for the map dramatically. Why did they change the doors like that in mp?
Vaughn, try reinstalling jk2 rad yet again, and before you try to run it, clean out the windows/temp folder. Just sometimes a junk file in their can interfere with the running of normal programs. Probably won't help, but it's worth a shot. _______________ Death is only the beginning. This comment was edited by Kalheka on Jan 18 2003 03:04pm. |

Corran, i dont think its the case. Why? Because i cant open anything to do with radient. I dont even know where the map files are, i havent made anything. All i do is double click on the icon, and it don work :/ ah well. Lets see if you can map in gmax... _______________ When you become an actor, you become the person, and you dont act anymore. Kalheka, I've never tried this, but i think it might be possible.
There is no 'toggle' selection in the entity window for a door in multiplayer, but try giving the door a wait value of -1. Then make a trigger_multiple and connect them. I'm thinking that this might work because if you start to open a door with a button and then press it again, it goes back the way it came. A -1 wait value will make the door never go back to its starting position on its own. The only problem that might occur is that a -1 wait value might not let ANYTHING trigger the door back. But I think it will. _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! Shadow Faction- a new JKII competition community center. Check it out at www.ssresources.com/shadow |

I'm onto my own new problem here. In MP, is there a way to set a door so it toggles on a switch, and stays open or closed until toggled again?
I can't seem to get it to work in MP, only in SP. _______________ Death is only the beginning. |

Now I just discovered something interesting.
I wondered what would happen if i opened radiant and the map at the same time by double clicking on a map file. I ended up getting the same error message you get, Vaughn. It said the stuff about wanting to edit preferences and all that stuff. (sorry if im not very clear...) Anyway, could it be that your just doulbe clicking on the map files to open radiant and therefor creating the problem? or is it too much to hope for that that is the only problem... If it is the problem, then all you ahve to do is double ckick on the radiant icon to open it, then load the map seperatly. _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels! I think its asking you to change the preferences because the current ones MIGHT be creating a problem. The only thing That I can think of that might be creating a problem would be the graphics information for the 3d view. experiment between the 3 choiced under views/rendering and see if that helps. _______________ The only thing better than playing JA is making JA levels!
