There are a few people around here that wanna try out mapping or wateva, but can't always get through the tutorials. People that already map mite get stuck with something too. You could get forwarded to Dom, but he's never got the time to reply to that kinda mail for sum reason...

So, here looks like a nice place to set up for a community mapping discussion :) Better go grab those tent poles...

Is it possible to put a camera and monitor pair in a MP map? I got it working in a SP map. I know it's not done the same way for MP (I tested it hehe.) Any help would be wonderful.

No, the upgrade is working fine for me, so I don't think thats it. Unfortuanly, I can't think of anything else that might be causing that problem:(. Maybe the people at lucas forums will be of more help.

Kalheka, To change the amount of health from a med pack, youd have to find the file that has it and change something, it has to do with scripting, and im not to good at that.

Alright Kalheka, heres some advice:

Fast compile rules state that you make everything not touching the void detail. Sometimes, however, you must sacrifice a quick compile for better frame rates. Any major room should have its outermost walls structural. Anything inside the room can still be detail. Then, cover a doorway (with a func_door in it) completly with an area_portal brush (in system textures) Then, go to top view (for a normal door standing up vertically) and resize and move the area_portal brush so that the brush still covers the entire lenght of the door, but is in the exact middle width wise. This will effectivly close off the room from the rest of the map technically, so the game doesnt draw the rest of the map when your in the room. This will improve framerates greatly in a large map, and is still good to do in a small map. Do this for all major rooms. You're gonna have to decide what "major rooms" are yourself, based on how long it starts to take to compile.

Some other things that slow framerates are glass, fog, and curves. For glass, dont use excessive amounts in one place. For example, dont make a room where everything is made of glass. For curves, the same applies. Fog is okay in most cases, except when its in a big area. Dont cover a huge room or a big outside area in fog, because framerates will drasticly drop.

Also, keep the above three things in mind and putting all of them together in the same room isnt allways a great idea.

For single player maps, where you can do dynamic lighting, try not to do tons of flashy lightwork, because then framerates will suffer greatly.

Thats all I can think of now...

Ah ok, well that's not a problem I can work around that.

I now need some advice. My map is getting large, and it's only about 1/3 done. I need some advice on how to help keep the frame rates up on the map, my framerates drop down to under 20 in some areas of the map.

It doesn't look possible through radiant, and if it is possible its either through a cvar command or a modded version.

btw, fyi: i use GtkRadiant - www.qeradiant.com (in the files section)

First I'd like to thank all of you for your help with my mapping project. :)

I want to make a custom sky shader for the Yavin sky, the info that I have found is hard to understand. Is there a shader tutorial somewhere that uses JK2 Radiant?

Edited to say: I figured it out on my own :)

Edited again (lol):

How does one change the amounts of some of the supplies. I.E. Change the Med Kit to give 100 instead of 25?

Well, then I dont know what you can do. You can try reinstalling it (simply take the program, move it to the desktop, then move it back. MAke sure you take the program, not a shortcut). You can also try downloading it from another location. Maybe http://richdiesal.jedioutcastmaps.com/tutorials/gc101lsn2.html (richdeisal's tuts website)

Heres what i know about JK2 problems- hope they help:):

I do not know what this specific error means, but I do know that almost all problems that occur while loading radiant happen when it is not installed properly. Check that radiant is in the GameData/tools folder.

Also, if you are using Windows XP, and your user has a very low security setting, problems may occur as well.

I seem to find that even if you light the "outside areas" the same way you light the "inside areas", as long as you give a reasonable amount of light, just the presance of a bright sky will give the illusion of more light than there really is. This makes it easier to do an outside area without sky lighting than you might think. :)

kalheka, there is a sky for yavin, but i don't think its in the yavin textures. It doesn't give off light though. I think its sky/yavin.

Aeth, a person is actually a small bit taller than 64 units physically, but the game treats the size in most cases as 64 units. For instance, with force jump 3 you can "jump 8 times your height" or something like that. The actual jump height is 8 times 64 units.

I did an experiment, and I found that the lowest ou can make a ceiling without messing up the camera is 88 units off the ground.

i started playing wich rich diesels tutorial too... then i made a small testmap, thought i did a medium room and a HUGE room. what came out? atiny tiny room, you almost could not stand in, and a medium room like matrix. in another map i placed 8 stormtroopers close to each other (the sides of their icons in radiant touched) and entered the map. what happened? i saw only 2... but they respawned each 4 times. lol

i finally figured out that a player's height is about 64 units... am i right? and if you ever do a map and want to share it with another mapper-to-be, jus mail me the .map file ^_^

ok, thanks guys. Is there one for Yavin? Sorry to have to ask, but many times the program shows the names of stuff overlapping so much that I can't read it. Also, I did find out the exact size of a player model in the game by messing a little.

Sorry I told you slightly wrong. Corran is right on the money. You do hit "s" not "n" while a single surface is selected to see where the texture is coming from. If it is a surface from the sky textures it should read something like "sky/bespin". Just type in "bespin/sky" and it will automatically look in the bespin texture set at the texture called sky. Likewise you could type in "bespin/floor" or any other known name of a texture without even loading the textures first and it will find it.

Kalheka, if you cant find SKY in the BESPIN textures, try going to the sky textures, then using the sky called "bright_light". Its a Bespin sky that emits a bright light.

Or, if you select the face of a brush, then hit s to open up the surface editor thingy (cant remember what its called) and type in "bespin/sky" then the surface you selected should be covered with bespin/sky, and the texture should be in the texure window with the others.

Also, you can get a scale of how big kyle (or any other player model) is in comparison to your map simply by putting in an info_player_start or an info_deathmatch. The size of those entities is only a tiny bit shorter than a player, and takes up about the same floor space.

Ok, I went looking that way, and for some reason I can't find a sky texture when I load that way. I have to load the sky textures in order to use one. I don't get it.
