The Points System, how does it work for you?

Howdy Kids, this is a thread for anyone that has taken a class, and not received points. If you are one of these people leave a comment here.

Edit: I'd just like to state for the record that my own points issue has been resolved.

Important: This is not a complaint box nor a flame post. I started this thread to help the JACs ascertain where some of the wrinkles in the new points system are, and give them a idea as to where to begin the ironing process.

If you're a student that has been shorted points just leave a post as to the circumstances.

JATs feel free to leave a post on how you handle the points system as well. Things like student helpers, repeating classes, Master/Padawan training, or anything you will or will not reward points for.

Maybe some opinions of how both students and JATS feel the system could be improved,if you think it needs improved, and any questions students have about system in general, would be helpful for us all as well.

My goal here is for the students to get a feel for what the JATs expect from them, and to help the council to smooth out some of the kinks of the system.

Edit: Well I guess it is a complaint box, but the point is not to complain. :)

I was in a class that was full but the instructor invited me so I went. I was told by the JAT that he would not be able to give me a point. I told him no problem. Anyway long story short he was able to give me a point after all. So my "point" is this: don't focus on the points, just learn and things will work out for the best.

You have to enroll because its the only way we can add/remove the points.

Lemme show you. Here's my next class rooster.

Duration: 1 hour
Roster:
The Canadian Jedi | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
Cliqster | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
Icco | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
Silk Money | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
D.A.M | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
Yakkamis | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
[JAS] Super | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
Eldrin | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
shrawn | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt
YV_Firestorm | Remove | +1 pt | -1 pt

As you can see it's slighly diferent than what you guys see. And its by clicking on the +1 or -1 links that we can give you or remove points.

So you have to enroll in order to receive points.

Read on eof my previous posts to see how I give points to the guys that drop by without being enrolled.

one suggestion: let the class stay (for JATs) longer than one hour? would maybe help :)

and erm, why do students need to enroll at all? i mean... the point system should show how many classes you attended and actually LEARNED from. so those who just slip by an realise "hey, a class. i wanna join" attended/learned but dont get a poin. get me? :)
erm, this would be pretty long winded but why not note down all those guys who attened a class and give them their points manually?
or programm something (dunno if it's possible), like a form where you enter the students names and the site gets updated automatically.

Hey guys comon, I’m not saying your not right, like I’ve said I screwed up my first class too.

What I'm trying to explain is that some times peeps star screaming "where’s my point". And after taking a good look at it the point wasn't there because he forgot to enrol or missed other class and got a point deducted, witch canceled the one they are looking for.

From the cases that the students have reported to me maybe 70% it was a JAT' fault not the students.

Now concerning the classes where the JAT doesn't show up. I'm sorry but I don’t think there should be any points. I mean there was no class, then you haven’t learned nothing. That’s the goal of the points.

I do think that there should be some sort of control for the JAT's attendance to classes. If he misses one, he should run an extra class next time to make up for it.

Another thing some students forget is that not all the classes give you points.

Classes like my CTF class on Saturdays and RP classes are a perfect example. The main purpose of these classes is to have some fun (and of course learn something if you can).

DJ as posted that if you feel that you are missing some points, find the JAT that runned the class and ask if he remembers you. If he does he is allowed to mail your name to DJ or Doobie and they will set your points right.

Feel free to post any more questions; I'll try to answer them all.

Jace you made so excellent comments but what about the people that enrolled for the class and attended the class and didnt get any points what happens to them and the Instructor only has a hour to give the points i think? So far all the classes i have have taken i havent recieved any points for them and yes i enrolled so what happens to everybody that shows. Also another thing what if a Inscructor doesnt show up to class and the students recieve nothing because the was no show?.Im not trying to put the point system down all im saying that it has a few flaws. Im thinking that when the Instructor is doing points that thye should have like a checkbox option and whoever enrolled is in there and if they show up you put a check and the site updates and gives though students the points and whoever enrolled and didn't show up isn't checked and loses a point. THe system has it flaws but the ive noticed the JAT's are no longer being nagged which is good maybe we could just get rid of the system and just have Trials in a Trial on Class. Thanks for Listening.MetroidBlade

All of your points and examples are valid and correct Jace, but what about the students that enroll, show up, but don't get the points? So far I've attended since the point system was placed. Knight Trial Prep, CTF Madness, and Old-Style Saber Technique. I enrolled, attened, participated, but my points have not moved from 12. This is my problem, and I'm sure others have this problem as well.

Guys, I've been getting some complaints about point's not showing , missing , or vanished points.

After some investigation, me and the students in question came out with the following explanations:

- Student with 4 points when he had 5 last time he checked. This results from him enrolling on a class and not showing up.

- Student complaining about not receiving a point for a class. He enrolled on 2 classes, attended 1 and skipped the other. So 1 point - 1 point = 0 points. So he actually received the point but it was cancelled by the class he missed.

- Student attended class but didn't have a point. He just showed up in class and never enrolled. In these situations you don’t get a point unless the trainer gets another way to give them.

So as you can see you have to be careful when enrolling on classes. Only do it if you are sure that you can attend or point will be subtracted.

Last night I had 10 ppl enrolled for my class, from those 10 only 3 showed up. Meanwhile i have 3 comments on the class from ppl that wanted to join and couldn’t because the rooster was full. And another 4 showed up for class complaining about the same.

When you enrol and don’t show up you are preventing a student that actually wants to take the class from doing it.

If you enrolled and you for some reason are late you can do 2 things:

Remove your self from the list or go to the server and tell me that you are late even if it's 5 minutes to the end of the class. You wont get your point but no one will subtract you a point for missing a class either.

Howdy, here is a suggestion for the other JAT's.

I thought of this after missing the points of my 1st class after the new system was implemented.

Make a list of the students not erolled but also shoewd up.

Ask these students to enroll at the class in 5 minuts (the class will stay on for 1 hour after th eend of the class).

Go to the web page add the points for the students that showed.

Subtract the points for the ones that didnt show and remove them (this will release a slot for the extra guys).

Wait 10 minuts, by this time the extra guys will have enrolled. Add their points.

Neo, that was a JAT no show. I'm not sure how they will be handled. Yet another reason I posted this thread.

Maybe the JAC or JATs can ring in on this issue?

I've attended one class, because the class times (due to time zone) just aren't right for me. I should change a lot of things in real life to be able participate in majority of classes.

*not complaining*
The class that I took was special attacks and I didn't get a point because I just happened to be on the server and didn't enroll in advance.

There's only one thing I really don't understand.
ex : I haven't enrolled in a class but when the class starts I'm on the server not knowing that there is a class. When I realize there is a class I ask the JAT that there is some room left so I can follow that class.....because...I really want to learn something.
BUT .... when the points are given a don't get any because I was not enrolled...

This is stupid I think. When you join a class xhen you are not enrolled and you ask the teacher that you may stay adn follow. For me it's the same as saying..."Hey, I really want to learn something"

I kind of like the idea of the point system, but so far it seems a bit like communisum. Good in theory, but scattered in practice. I've taken some classes so far, being very active and agreeable (as usual :D), but my points have not move at all. I know that the point system was created to divert attention away from trials and towards classes, maybe this "class-mania" is too much for whoever updates the student points to handle? Also, it seems like some hopeful j-men who wish to becom Knights, got the royal screw job (pardon my french) when the point system was put in effect (I myself have taken alot of class before the point system, if those were taken into account, I'd have well over 20 points :(). I'm really not complaining, just stating my opinion.

p.s. I can't get the Goldfish theme song out of my head >_<

Hasn't worked for me so far. (Well i joined only one class since the new point system) I don't mind for not getting this point, as long as it does not become a habit. But gernerally i like the idea, so keep it going and someday it might run flawless :)

I think that you need to get JAT's in various time zones, cause ATM there are few classes that I can actually attend, and I want to advance :(

Actually this thread is intended for everybody. I'd like to hear about every ones experience with the system to date. The more input we get (both positive and negative) the better an idea we'll have of where the system needs work.

Again JATs I ask for your input here as well. Let us students know what your willing to award points for. Think of every question a student may ask and post your answers here.

For example a student takes one of your classes and receives a point. Will the same student be award points if he takes the same class again?

I think the addition of a points system was a great idea. Let us all come together to bring this idea to its full realization.

Edit: Ulic,I didn't invent the wheel, and I know why it's here and how it works. I'm just trying to help make it roll a little smoother.

I have no complaints about the system. Another way for JAKs/JATs to know if you know the stuff is to play with them. IMO anyway.

I know this thread is not intended for me but I just wanted to contrast. I have received points for two classes I attended. The only two I have ever attended actually. They appeared on my profile right away. I just wanted to encourage other students that the system will work. This is just the honeymoon phase. Give it time like Arcuss said.
