Ok Here's a post with some usefull links. I will keep updating this as needed.

If you don't know about this site and you are a Windows User you need to know about this. This site will patch your os with any of the bugs in any Windows OS.
http://www.windowsupdate.com

A good piece of software to have. This will scan your computer for any kind of spyware that any freeware or shareware program that you download and install.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com or you can try spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
*NOTE* Don't have both installed or they will say each other is spyware. I like spybot better.

A good free anti-virus program.. If you don't have a anti-virus I recommend you do.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

This site is good for information on ISP's(Internet Service Providers). It alos has a great little toolset for testing your internet connection and the forums are helpful for tweaking your pc to get the most out of your connection.
http://www.broadbandreports.com

Do you have windows XP or 2000 and a great video card? Seem to be stuck at about 60FPS, even though you say like com_maxfps 120? Simple fix http://www.ryanmh.com/files/reforce.zip is a fix for a Windows Bug that locks your frame rate at 60 fps when you can get higher. All you do is unzip that run it, click auto populate, hit Apply and reboot and boom FPS allover the place :)

How about some slow login times with Windows XP pro? Any way to fix that?

EDIT: On another note, I am happily on the internet on Mandrake. I'm liking it so far, but there is one small annoyance: Everytime I try to get in, my mouse doesn't want to work. But, if I unplug it and let everything load and boot, then plug it in, it works normally. It's just a standard PS/2 mouse, and it's weird. Any ideas?

Help! I am completely inable to play any Quake 3 powered games.(eg JK outcast). During play my PC comes up with that error reporting message that says the program has stopped responding and as soon as I click anythin it restarts:( This happens on Call of Duty as well as Quake3A and SOF2. I know for sure that it is not a virus for I have formatted and re-intalled WINXP pro in a vain effort to resolve this problem.
Please help or I will never be able to play JK again.

ok, so the weirdness started with the 'Search screen', see below.

Now it's gotten even worse
An alarm went off inside my computer... like a fire-alarm kind of thing, loud, annoying, and so on...
It happened while I was on a server.

My brother (and he should know) says it's a virus which is doing something terrible, and the computer picked it up... you know, the option you can set in BIOS (I think) for Virus-scanning or something like that.

well, I went to Safe Mode and tried scanning my computer, only to find the message: "Your Virus-DAT Files are corrupted, please re-install."
So I reinstalled, and when I was about to download the latest Virus-DAT files, the Virusscan which was downloading them caused a fatal error, and closed down the program.
No matter what I did, another install, downloading manually, it just didn't take...

I have no idea what's causing this, but you know, since I had just downloaded the skin-pack (JJ's) from the Server page, my thought immediately went there.

So I went to security.semantec.com and scanned my computer online, and it turned up nothing.
No malicious programs or virusess found on my entire system.
I tried another online scan (can't find the site right now) and it also turned up nothing.

So, this might be some clever virus shutting me down, or this is just some hoax... maybe a program that triggered that alarm?

Oh btw, I also tried scanning through DOS (Virusscan-CD in Disk Drive and then starting up your computer with a boot from the CD)
It asked if it could scan my Hard Drive, and then proceeded.
It was done in less than 5 seconds, since the summary said it found no data on my hard drive.
Freaked out, I started up my computer normally, and found that everything was still there ...
I'm flummoxed right now

any ideas on what might cause this?

EDIT: I have successfully installed the McAfee VirusScan again, and now it works... The scan turned up nothing...
I also had Ad-Aware scan my computer, and also turned up nothing...

Hey Orion, I have a weird problem

When I double-click a map, or a folder to open it,
instead of opening the map, the map 'Search' opens, in which you can search the Hard Drive for items.
So each time I have to right-click the map and select Open or Explore to get into the map

I've checked my settings and none of them seem to be causing this.

Btw, I'm using Windows XP.

Can I do something to stop this?

I would just like to take this moment to remind everyone about the dangers of overclocking, at least on the graphics card side of the game:(. A couple weeks ago, I sorta trusted AtiTool. Well, when I was testing to see how high my memory could go "safely", apparently it decided to betray my trust. It gave me an error. Well, I still have my Radeon 9800 pro, and it still works wonderfully for some games (i.e. KOTOR, JK:JA) but on others, you can just take a look.

http://www.geocities.com/mune42/

First screen is BF:V, the other two are Halo.

Needless to say, I'm going to be wary of OC'in anything in the future unless I am sure I'm getting new hardware to replace it soon, not to mention work on getting a new card. So, here ends my warning. Stay careful!:)

Hi there,
I found the solution to my Outlook Express problem: it was a strange interference (only on Win2k) with the Java/Javascript/ActiveX filter of my McAfee AV program (version 4.5.1). I turned that feature off and everything worked fine.
Beware, that combo is deadly, it literally destroys your email database, leaving you with empty folders.
Compliments of Mr Fatty.

I got a 400mhz, 256 ram, 10gb HD box running Mandrake. But, the harddrive isn't really enough for what I do (school computer club site & forums.) I recommend more ram (512 is nice), and mabye 40 gb of HD instead. Then you'll never ever have to worry about running out of space and the ram just makes things run a lot nicer.

What are the recommended/mininum hardware requirements for a server running *NIX, preferrably FreeBSD, and has the following:

- httpd (prolly apache)
- ftpd
- sshd
- eggdrop

note that I don't want no GUI.

- cmad of tha X :empire:

PS. Hardware requirements = RAM, CPU, HD space and w/e else you think you should include :P :D

EDIT: I want the server to have fundamental apps like pico or nano (or both), vi(m), gcc, g++ and umm.... lynx.

EDIT2: It's gonna be a personal server, i.e. only I am gonna use it; not a public one :)

Gradius, go download the newest version of the JavaRE (Runtime Environment). THe java version windows ships with is a giant piece of garbage. Mircosoft took a version of JAva and "customized it" its horrible and EXTREMLY outdated.

Ulic, um dunnno try a new peice, or see if u can swap out ur old stick or something

Nero, reboot the pc, clean the cds throughly. got 2 cdrom drives in the pc? if so try the other drive

Outlook express is crap, just like IE, go get Thunderbird, its part of the Mozilla Project and get Firefox, it will import your settings from IE, and all your bookmarks. I think it can import your settings for OE.

Hey man I'm having a little javascript problem. It all started on fileplanet.com. Downloading never used to be a problem but one day I went to go click a download link and it never worked. I tried on several others and nothing happens. At the bottom of explorer it just says javascript and a bunch on numers. Now, it happens to about %40 of all links I try to open that have something to do with javascript. I can't even create a stupid cheap free website because of it. Do you know what's up?

Still no luck.

I have the 512 and a 256 of DDR333 RAM. They were working, but now they don't like me. The board will only take one stick now, and if I place both in (now), it reads my 2500+ as a 3200+, and won't boot.

I won't even SAY the errors I get when I just place in the 512 (DDR333) and the 512 (DDR400). I did manage to adjust the timings by percentage, running them at 333. This was working with all RAM in, but then it junked out.

I now can only place ONE stick in, so I have the 512 DDR400.

The config of the slots is as follows:

ORANGE PURPLE (Capacitors) ORANGE PURPLE

And the RAM is configured as follows in them:
NONE NONE (Capacitors) 512(DDR333) NONE

Please help out, and clarify as to this "order" thing. Thanks.

Ulic: some Gigabyte boards don't like RAM of different sizes and/or speeds - I should know, I had the same problem a while ago. Make sure all your motherboard and Windows drivers etc are updated. In the BIOS, go to the screen with the RAM information, and manually set the RAM speed to 333 MHz. Like Orion said, try swapping them. And if it still doesn't work, take it back and get a 512 instead. Not a Samsung one.

I'm not sure this is the place I should post this but I do not know another place:P

here we go:

Yesterday I de-installed JK3 because my favorite server list wasn't working (every server was named 'bot' and no ping or map was shown).

That all went quite well but the sh!t started when I tried to reinstall the game. I started the standard instalation procedure and everything went fine untill 47% where you should put assets1 in your diskdrive. I put the second disk into my dear pc thingy but my pc claimed it wasn't on this disk.

I am very sure it is on it because I looked trough the files it contains and assets1 was with them. I've tried to install the game manually but I'm far to stupid for that:P.

So mr Orion, can you help me.

ps. I am owning a legal copy of the game in case that matters:P

Hi there,

I have a dual-boot PC, Win98SE+Win2K, I use IE6+OE6 (sigh) and I recently performed all the critical updates via Windows Update on both OS's.

Problem: on Win98SE everything works fine, Win2K: OE lost all my msgs and stopped working normally (can't read/send/receive msgs, button toolbar messed up).

I have 4 email accounts (1 IMAP, 3 pop3), I uninstalled manually OE as mentioned on Micrososft Support, fixed the necessary registry keys and re-installed. Re-created all accounts and tested: everything ok. Performed update again, OE screwed up again.

Any hint would be great... now I am forced to use Win98SE to read/send email, which I don't like at all...

OK,

I'm trying to mix DDR333 with DDR400 on a Gigabyte GA-7N400L Motherboard. I currently have on 512 stick and one 256 stick (DDR333, Samsung Chips). I just bought a 512 Stick of DDR400, also Samsung. I add the new chip, Windows hates me. I take it out, Windows works as best as it ever will (stupid Windows).

So, I know I need an adjustment in BIOS, but no luck, even with the Ctrl-F1 unlocking of advanced features, can't find anything to set the speeds of all of them to 333.

Hey Orion,

I dont know whats going on with my PC but when I browse I cannot see any animated gif, and some gif simply never shows up. Im using default browser settings, got macromedia flash player and shockwave player installed but it doesnt help.

Do you know what may be the cause of this? Do I need a specific viewer to view them? The PC I use at school works fine, I see the animations but it doesnt work on the one Im using at home.

ty

edit: Actually I found the problem. My firewall was blocking it. Now my question is......do you know what port the animated gif use? Cause I dont want to take out my firewall just to be able to view these gifs. There has to ba a way to configure it so we can still view the animation....

edit2: Alright nvm this post Orion I fixed it :)

Is there some way to get QuickTime 6 and an older version (1.2 I believe :D) to co-exist? Case in point: I want to play Myst (Windows XP, 98/ME emulation enabled), but Myst doesn't know about QT 6.

Also, thanks for the stuff on lerping. :)

And Nobel, I ran into the same problem with LEGO Island (the first one :D) a while ago with Windows 2000 - which, by the way, runs games faster and more smoothly than XP, even with XP's visual themes turned off. Older games that were designed to run specifically on 95/98 and NOT NT 4 won't run on 2000/XP unless you use XP's emulation feature.
