http://www.lavasoftusa.com or you can try spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
*NOTE* Don't have both installed or they will say each other is spyware. I like spybot better.

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

This site is good for information on ISP's(Internet Service Providers). It alos has a great little toolset for testing your internet connection and the forums are helpful for tweaking your pc to get the most out of your connection.
http://www.broadbandreports.com

Do you have windows XP or 2000 and a great video card? Seem to be stuck at about 60FPS, even though you say like com_maxfps 120? Simple fix http://www.ryanmh.com/files/reforce.zip is a fix for a Windows Bug that locks your frame rate at 60 fps when you can get higher. All you do is unzip that run it, click auto populate, hit Apply and reboot and boom FPS allover the place :)

There are sometimes options on the install on which profile to allow users to access the program, you may have chosen only the current active profile.

oh well... My pc is running fine now...

I just got one question though.
I installed a Virusscan and we have a couple of profiles...
It loads up on the Admin profile, but not on the user profile from my Step-dad...
And I can't figure out why.
It's not in the Start Menu over there, but it is in the Admin profile.

It was installed on an Admin profile, btw..

Any ideas?

Ok, I did the system scan, and my problems were ok for like three frikkin' minutes...
I don't know what it said because I was asleep at the time, but my Step-dad told me it was all ok. (In other words: he had no idea of what the darn screen told at the end and shut it down).
SystemScan also saves to a LogFile, but I've been unable to find it.

The clicks are back, and worse than ever, and my pc freezes up even if I try to start a normal scan.
So, I'm thinking it really is my HD.

Oh btw, I checked for Virusses-> Clean
I checked for Ad-Ware/Spyware, and it found 214 files, which I deleted.

So, I'm just going to start making backups, and get a new HD ASAP.

Thanks for the help!

Bail u didnt say it comes from inside the rig... omg.. are u sure it comes from where the HD is located ?

do a deep scna with scandisk (yes, the one that takes hours) and see what it comes up with.
let it run over night, I suggest.

alternatively, use any other HD program u got, just do the deep analysis scan thingy.
that scans every cylinder of your HD, and if some are bad, they're reported.

sounds like u got some bad blocks/sectors on ur drive, and its getting ready to kick the bucket. The best thing u can do its use the computer as little as possible to save what life the drive has left in it. Get a new drive and try to salvage what data off of it that you can.

Hey Orion

I think I might have a problem with my Hard Drive here.
Every once in a while, (about an hour ago now) I hear a click which is coming from the inside of my computer. When it clicks, my computer completely freezes up, and after a while, a second click is heard, and the computer works again.
I was thinking something along the lines of my processor, or maybe my Cooler
but every time I restart my computer (Normal way, you know: Start-> Shut down (or whatever it is in English) and when I'm back in Windows after restarting, the 'Checking Hard Drive for Errors' window comes up.
This only comes up when you've resetted your pc, right?
Now it's showing up every time, and every time it performs a Hard Drive surface scan for errors.
I haven't encountered this for like... ever...
and I'm really confused:s

Could it be that my harddrive is malfunctioning?

Yeah, I guess from what I found on the Splinter Cell forums is that it is the game, in conflict with the Audigy card. I'll hunt down latest drivers, but it seems that it is a progam bug, and not a lot of people are happy about the conflicts between Splinter Cell and Audigy cards.

Hopefully it will be patched to fix the problem. But a few hundred people all crash in the same spots in the game. So it's a program problem, and I've seen similar GPF listings there.

I did roll back the drivers, and it didn't fix it. Nor did changing the settings. The only thing that helps with the settings is turnig EAX off. This defeats the purpose of an Audigy sound card, right?

But yeah, I did some tweaks in the Registry, the Game Settings, and in in MSCONFIG. You can get the program to run smootly by turning off a bunch of stuff in MSCONFIG's startup, and some services. There's also a registry trick that works well, and I can post it if requested. (I wish I could higlight that, it's good for most modern games/progs in WinXP). So, still problematic, but it's not a problem on my end.

Thanks though. I learned stuff, so I'm happy. Just filling you in so that you might know what was up with the problem for future support of things like this.

OK, yeah, specs. I meant to include those:

AMD Athlon 2500+
778MB DDR333 RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (128MB Card) (Using the 4.2 drivers)
Windows XP Pro

It might be the settings, or the drivers. I recall having a similar problem about a year ago (coincidentally, when the original Splinter Cell came out) and I fixed it by going back to the non-latest drivers, jumping back about 2 versions (ATI releases new versions about every 2 months).

I'll play with the settings, and maybe even jump back to 4.0 or 4.1 drivers. But yes, I want your advice as well. And I'll patch too. I'll let you know what works.

hm this looks like a general Unreal Engine:: Render Failed to me....

try playing with the details. set them lower, be it texture or geometry detail. it might be the game itself, but the unreal engine is pretty stable.

My typo. Not an error , but a General Protection Fault. Here's what I get:

Quote:

General protection fault!

History: RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- FCameraSceneNode::Render <- UGameEngine::Draw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop

I have 778MB or so of DDR333 RAM. Shouldn't be a problem. I'm just confuzzed, and this is just an example of what goes wrong.

Just for record, the game is Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (just came out). I have no idea if that is it or not. But they recommend 512MB of RAM. Although I am strongly considering getting more RAM in my comp, even before this fiasco.

So, any fixes? I like to play games, and not have them crash out after 10 min. And it's not a heat issue, the rebooting. I'm fairly certain it is about what Orion said below, accessing memory that it cannot have access too. So, any tips on how to fix that?

I have never heard/seen that kinda of error, but comming from a programmers aspect about memory conflics, your program would just crash if there is any kind of memory. Every application is given a pool of memory to draw from, and it should not go over that..if it does it just crashes. Reason being it is trying to access memory it does not have access to so it crashes.

OK, I'll get more details for this, but here's what's up:

During gameplay, it crashes out with a "General Protection Error" window, plus a lot of data (which I have saved the text of and will post once I copy it. Sometimes the computer resets as well, just after the box appears.

The text gives some sort of a path, but not to a file, more like

General Protection Fault!

MainLoopBack>FireDraw>WorldUpadate>GlobalSound>and on and on...

I've used my diagnostic tools (MicroScope and such from my A+ Certification course), and checked the RAM to find no errors. I do have another boot scanner to check the RAM, and I may use that.

But what do you think the problem is? It's only with games thus far (and new games/demos, so it might have to do with the "freshness" of the game), so I don't know if I am straining the RAM or what. But I recall GPF being where two items are accessing the same portion of RAM and conflict. Something like that.

Just let me know. I'll post the error message in entirety once I have it.

There should be a Windows update file that helps you a little with this. But that's with program access and stuff. But always something.

He can view your stuff inside your own "my documents"??? Make sure he hasn't got an admin account.

yeah, ok, thanks:)

That's a nice start;)

But isn't there a way to really hide things from him?
Like let's say, my girlfriend sends me a picture through MSN. I put it in my own map, and I remove it from 'Recent Files', and My Received Files.
But when I come home the next day, I see the picture is opened again.
He's going through my stuff, and I want it to stop!
Like, can I hide an entire map from his profile? So it would look like it isn't there, when he's logged in?

Oh yeah, is it also possible to make programs open immediately when I log in, but not when he logs in?
E.g.: Kazaa, a notepad file with things to do, etc

hehe, I know I'm asking lots and lots of questions, but heck, I'm learning here;)

Btw, I seem to be coming off a bit ungrateful. I'm grateful, don't get me wrong;)
Thanks for your time in typing that out, dude;)

Bail:
Durign install the admin account is reated. Set a password. After install do following:

Start>Settings>Control Panel

Open the "users" button. Click create new user. Set the options. Set the password.

That's it! Easy huh?

One more note: Files installed will be visible to all users unless they are put in the "My Documents" folder of that specific user. Also, admin can see anything on any profile

Hey Orion.

I've got a question for you.
In the Easter Holidays, I'm probably going to format my pc, and put Windows XP on it.
Now, I know XP has file permissions and profile stuff and such...
So I want to divide my PC in to at least three profiles, one for personal use (only my things show up), one for my step-fathers use (only his stuff, and general stuff show up) and an admin profile (which shows everything).
Now, I have no idea how to do this, and I was just wondering if you happened to know a good guide to this.

Just a note, I'm not one of the smartest when it comes to computers. Sure, I can hold my own, but I don't know a lot of fancy terms, and stuff like that. (just the basics and intermediate I should say).

hehe, thanks in advance man!

You're the greatest
