Do you have windows XP or 2000 and a great video card? Seem to be stuck at about 60FPS, even though you say like com_maxfps 120? Simple fix http://www.ryanmh.com/files/reforce.zip is a fix for a Windows Bug that locks your frame rate at 60 fps when you can get higher. All you do is unzip that run it, click auto populate, hit Apply and reboot and boom FPS allover the place :)

Hey Orion,

I just wanted to say thanx for the advice, it fixed my problem!!! (Unknown Device in Device Manager).

However, after I installed the drivers for the chipset and rebooted, it still came up with "found new hardware". Turns out, that some kbds (especially ones with the extra buttons) will cause that if you don't install some stuff. In my case, I have a Dell kbd and I had to install the "Dell Solution Center" in order for it to go away. Luckily, I can disable it without the "new hardware found" crap coming up.

Thanx again, Orion! You da MAN!!!

Yeah, fixed it. The manual says it was already set to auto-detect, but it WASN'T. THE MANUAL LIED. I should have know. Feh.

But the problem is fixed. I knew I needed to bump it up to 133, but my old Mobo just had those settings inside the BIOS. This one had a series of switches on the board. Needed to set that. But the switches will help for OC, but I will do that later on.

well, Ulic, u gotta set the Front Side Bus (FSB) up to 133 MHz. I have the same CPU, it should run at 133*11.5, urs looks liek it runs @ 100 x 11.5
either u gotta jumper that, or set that in ur BIOS.

yeah linux and modems = not go together well. The reason, since most PCI modems that you buy now adays are called Winmodems. what does that mean you ask? well it means that Windows handles most of the stuff for the modem. all the modem does is send and recive the info. While windows does the majority of the processing of data. Well what does that mean for linux? I'll Tell you. It means that the drivers for the modem are ment to work with windows and are not ment to work with *nix. Unless some one ports the driver/software to linux to work and the majority of modem companies do not. But there are ways to get them to work.. How? i dunno i have never delt with linux and a modem but there are tuturials online that have them.. try www.google.com/linux

Um, hi. So Linux won't recognize that I have a modem. It only sees the NIC. I've got Red Hat 9 if that helps. :(

As for the mobo problem, yes, yes you do need to reinstall Windows. That was a given, and I knew of it. Did that no problem.

As for the random crashes, it was because it was waiting for me to put on updated drivers. I guess it would crash because I did not update them, but was finicky in giving me enought time to INSTALL them properly.

I have everything up and running now, EXCEPT....

It thinks my processor is built to run at 1.14 GHz, when it SHOULD be something like 1.53 (or 1.74, as I like to OC). So, if you know where I MIGHT find the change in this new BIOS, then let me know. I KNOW what the problem is, but I don't know quite where the fixing location is.

As for the mobo info:
K7 Triton Series
nForce2 Motherboard
GA-7N400-L

Oh, I can't get the onboard LAN to work, but, er, I still can work it through another card. I'll figure it out. Just a bunch of new settings.

You can still set up a server on a dynamic IP, people will just have to change the IP they connect to periodically. :) There are services like dyndns.org that prvide DNS for ppl with dynamic IPs. Just make sure your ISP isnt assigning you an ip in the 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, or 172.16.x.x range.

Dj im not quite sure about the public address. It's possible that i might not be able to set this server up because my IP's are usually dynamic.

Rei: Are there any other problems you've noticed since switching networks? It looks like you'll have to reinstall your network printer, since your old one is bye bye. Talk to your net admin for the path to the printer.

Icco: Make sure you have some kind of public routable address assigned to you or your router. Open TCP port 80 in NAT or your Firewall to let web traffic through.

it usually ends, in the networkin chain, with your modem.

As for setting up web servers, no idea, all the isp i have had do not allow for end users to run a server.

um from what ive seen. xp doesnot really like it when you replace a motherboard, some times it works some times it doesnt. mainly on intels if we replaced a motherboard even with the same exact model. we would get the xp blue screen and it would nto boot the os forcing us to reinstall. now from what i have seen this is not as frequent on amd chips, why? hell if i know :P but i have seen it happen and your probably going to have to reinstall the os.

Hey,

I installed a new motherboard, and as of current, I keep getting random reboots whenever I turned it on, inside of 2 minutes.

I DID see where it had an error with a driver under "Motherboard Resources" stating that there were currently two instances of it running, that this one could not run. I could'nt uninstall it without it coming back again, so I disabled it.

That seemed to work, but then I ran Windows Update (had to get all the updates from a fresh install after the new board). During install, guess what? A reboot.

Now I just have no optioon for starting up windows. I may just reinstall again, that would most likely fix it, but my question here is:

What IS the random reboots?

My thought:
I have an on-board LAN that didn't like to function, and I had a LAN NIC installed as well, that WAS working. Perhaps it just did not like the additional LAN. Who knows.

I'll post more as I know more.

OS: WinXP
Chip: Athlon XP 1800+
RAM: DDR333, 770 MB
G-Gard: Radeon 9700 Pro
Sound: Audigy

So, whatever pointers you might have will be nice. I'll check back here when I can (my compy broke)

Rei: When you say you moved this to another network you do you mean physically to another hub or switch? In another building? etc etc. :)

Is your printer plugged directly into your network with an ethernet cable? (ethernet cables look like fat phone cables at the ends) Or was your printer plugged into a computer on the network?

Since you can at least get to some servers out there (like wireplay) then you may have a router or firewall keeping you from connecting to hosted servers. How does your network look?

eg:
cable modem -> router -> switch -> all my computers.
^^^ something like that.

What happens when you try to ping a computer hosting a JA game? Go to your start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd" and click "OK". In this new window type "ping <ip.address>" minus the ""'s and <>'s. Have you npoticed anything else going on weird since you switched?

TY orion, wow, you really know a lot, cools :D I have another headbreaker for you :) I have a LAN at home which connects all PC's. (2:P) and it used to work perfect but I think its cuz I took my PC out of this network and into another network that its not working correctly. Cuz When I press print on my and the other pc is also on it is supposed to just go print but it doesnt. Also. when I want to log in a server (jka) using /connect .....ip it doesnt work when its hosted on someones PC (like when I tried to join a server that eclipse made) But it USED to work and that is what annoys me :P but when I try to join a dedicated one like wireplay or Home, it works perfect.. WHat do I do???

Auron returns! Ok, this time it's my ISP. I'm on Vanidar's computer. When I try to dial up on my computer, it says "Could not establish connection with remote computer", all of a sudden, out of the blue. I've connected and played in there countless times, but today, it stopped meh. I brought my comp in here, used vanidar's phone line and cord, and it still said the same thing. I think it's my modem, but he has the exact some model (same comp), and he has no problems. I also didn't download anything right before it happened, so I dont know why it would just stop wanting to connect. I chatted with tech support, I did a few things to my modem settings, but still no go. Just double checking with Dr. Orion to be sure I have to replace my modem. If I do, what's a good one? I've been wanting to replace that Lucent Win forever... I need a quality one if I'm going to replace it. Well, what's the prognosis Doc? :D

if you have a amd system and its a VIA chipset:
