Ok Here's a post with some usefull links. I will keep updating this as needed.

If you don't know about this site and you are a Windows User you need to know about this. This site will patch your os with any of the bugs in any Windows OS.
http://www.windowsupdate.com

A good piece of software to have. This will scan your computer for any kind of spyware that any freeware or shareware program that you download and install.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com or you can try spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
*NOTE* Don't have both installed or they will say each other is spyware. I like spybot better.

A good free anti-virus program.. If you don't have a anti-virus I recommend you do.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

This site is good for information on ISP's(Internet Service Providers). It alos has a great little toolset for testing your internet connection and the forums are helpful for tweaking your pc to get the most out of your connection.
http://www.broadbandreports.com

Do you have windows XP or 2000 and a great video card? Seem to be stuck at about 60FPS, even though you say like com_maxfps 120? Simple fix http://www.ryanmh.com/files/reforce.zip is a fix for a Windows Bug that locks your frame rate at 60 fps when you can get higher. All you do is unzip that run it, click auto populate, hit Apply and reboot and boom FPS allover the place :)

Ok, as people may have noticed I've had some pretty bad lag spikes on the server and I've traced the blame to my wireless connection. The weird thing is, the lag spikes seem to happen at regular intervals, what I mean is I will play with a fine ping for a minute or so and I'd get a lag spike that lasts around ten seconds. Anyone know how I can combat this problem?

Typed in the correct IP address and password in the join game option- but when I press play- it just says connecting to *IP Removed* not the actual server name. It says 'Awaiting connection', and just counts how long it takes. Ive waited for about 5 mins numerous times and get bored. Im on a LAN connection at a University. Tigerclaw (member) rekons its a firewall problem- but dont know what to do!! ANY help would be much appreciated!

First off, I'm going to make two assumptions: 1) that you are, indeed, using the correct IP and port number, and 2) that you are trying with Jedi Academy (NOT Jedi Outcast, the JK2 Classes server is gone) updated to version 1.01.

Tigerclaw is correct. Assuming that you are not using a router, or that if you are, it is not set up to block any outgoing connections, there are two main possibilities:

1) Software firewall incorrectly configured. If you have an updated version of Windows XP SP2, you must manually tell the Windows Firewall to let JK3 through. I don't use it (the Windows Firewall), so I can't tell you how to do that, but I'm sure someone here can. If you're using a third-party firewall product, such as Norton Internet Security, refer to its documentation to find out how to allow outgoing connections. In any software firewall case, the exception that needs to be made is for jamp.exe on any UDP port.

2)Your university's network may block connections on any ports except the most common ones for Web browsing, etc, so as to avoid people clogging up the network with p2p and such. Ask your friendly local sysadmin for details and/or help.

well, first of all, double check the IP

If you're trying to connect to a non-existant IP, it'll do exactly that.
Also, don't forget the portal number (the four last digits behind the ":";)

I *highly* doubt 1) is the answer - 32 MB should be how much is recommended to use the sound driver *and* whatever else you want to do.

While there's very little difference between 98, 98SE, and ME, if the driver specifies 98SE as the minimum, then I'd say there's a very good chance that it won't work with less. :P

Check the Windows 98 SE CD - is it a full or upgrade version? I'm not sure if they did it with that particular one, but most Windows are released as either a "full" or "upgrade" CD. If you have a Full CD, you must go with option 2). If you have an Upgrade CD, you can't go with 2).

As for drivers, just get a list of the hardware, download them on your computer, and put them on a CD. ;)

(or multiple floppies, or something - multi-disk archives were invented for a reason.)

Okay, I got a question about Tootsy's computer here.

Recently I installed a sound card, which works fine outside of games. It's possible to play CD's, but the soundcard does not play any sound when booting Windows, nor does it play any sound at all when playing a game. Any game. Doesn't even matter which.

It's a very old thing, the computer, with 32MB of RAM, but according to the box of the soundcard, 32MB is the minimum amount.
It's running Windows 98, while the soundcard-driver requires Windows 98 SE (at the least). When I tried to upgrade their Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE, it gave me some funky error saying that wasn't possible.

I can think of two possible solutions, but I can't say which one is right.
1) The PC needs more RAM. While playing a game, all 32MB of Ram are used, and there's no more RAM to play the sound.
2) I could format the entire computer, and put Windows SE on it, but the problem is ... when they got the computer (they got it for free from a friend) they didn't get any of the drivers for the hardware, and I wouldn't know where to get everything. If it's that old (and it is) it should take me quite some time to search for everything. Downloading drivers isn't an option either, because on that particular computer, there is no Internet.

What do you guys think is the right step?

Does anybody understand what the cause of this problem could be? And how can you solve it?

Check the sound driver's configuration; some have options to automatically apply echo, reverb, etc to simulate different environments (why is not my concern). Also, in the Windows settings, make sure it's set to the type of speakers you have.

I take it back.

Everytime I'm doing something (literally 'anything') it shuts down. When it starts up again, it says there is no hard drive present. There is a new motherboard (only 1,5 months old)

I completely formatted the drive before I installed everything again, just to make sure I didn't have any conflicting drivers or w/e.
Anyway, what can cause this?
Last time I had this, I had to replace the hard drive with a new one, but that's only been two years ago. During this time, the Hard Drive only had two format c's. Oh, the hard drive is also partitioned into two partitions.
Can this be the problem that's breaking the harddrive each time? Because breaking two hard drives in a set of three years is ridiculous in my opinion, and I must be doing something wrong, I suspect.

Any help s'il vous plaît?

OK, here's "my" problem:

My sister has really managed to screw up the sound on her computer. Let's say she plays music in winamp (though it isn't limited to winamp, this problem applies to all programs that have to do with music/sound)...you'd think the sound of the music would be clean and nice, but instead, it sounds like it's being played inside a laaaarge room. Kind of like the effect you get from playing music/singing in a large church.

Does anybody understand what the cause of this problem could be? And how can you solve it?

Motherboards don't just die, there is usually a reason.

the most common of which I've found is a faulty power supply which supplies inconsistant voltages to it. This can often be monitored through software provided by the motherboard manufacturer, but the most reliable way is to hook up a multi-meter to the power plug and see what is going on.

Cheep power supplies will often do this in my experience.

If you're now paranoid about your hardware possibly being damaged, I'd run memtest and any other hardware diagnostics you can get for your hard drives, etc.

The past few days I had trouble starting up the pc. Sometimes it would show the windows XP logo (with the loading-status bar beneath it), and then suddenly my screen would go black, and the pc would stop responding completely.
Yesterday it stopped working all together. When I turn it on, it just shuts down again.

First we thought it was the power-supply, but that doesn't appear to be the problem after all.
My step-dad made the assumption that it's the CPU.
Is this possible?

And: If I buy a new CPU, do I also have to buy a new motherboard, because a newer CPU on a three-year-old motherboard can't be good right?

Go through the following possibilities in order.

1) Overheating. I believe this is the most likely cause, simply because of how you phrased the problem: a computer will not power up if it is in danger of damage from heat. Take off the CPU heat sink, remove all the old thermal paste, apply a new dab, and put it back together carefully. Avoid turning it on and off too many times - I've fried more than one CPU this way.

2) Motherboard. A dying/dead capacitor or whatever on the motherboard can result in the computer not starting up properly or at all. On the other hand, it's more common for a dead motherboard to power up but not run.

3) Peripherals. Busted circuitry in a hard drive or something else can make it seem like the power supply is going when it's actually fine.

I really don't think the CPU's gone; if it is, it's probably from you trying to start it up too many times when it's overheating. Generally, if the CPU or memory is dead, you will get beep codes during POST and the machine will power on but not run.

EDIT: If you do end up buying a new CPU, simply check your motherboard's manual. A three year old motherboard should be able to run current Athlon XPs and Pentium 4s (mine does :P), however, you'll need a new one if you intend to upgrade to, for example, an Athlon 64.
