Well look how HUGE the map is have u ever been to the weps area?
thats where Im saying the vehicle area should be
so my idea does requier MORE space :)
so in short all they have to do is put vehicle spawning in that area and probably change the terain a bit

peeps, u might hav a lot of good ideas, but shouldn't the size of the map be considered 2?
I think YY's vehicle area idea for example, would just be 2 big.

THIS is just me but
we SHOULD have like a vehicle area
not saying X wings and such but Swoops,Taun Tauns,ETC cause imo it'll make for FUN as heck classes for u JAKs and JATs to make:D
and what else
u should try to make the academy look a lil less ruined and a BIT more newish
other than that it rules :D

I have a new idea...

Since people would like to train with guns too, how about having an npc spawn room with all kinds of guns?
Like a stormtrooper, a cultist, and so on and so on...
Would that be possible?

Try to think of an Stand-up Comedian on the Stage in the Bar !

The Bar has a nice touch.

another good aspect is the Droid an the NPC room. so you can train wether there is someone else or not. That my problem often in JK2.

Oh yeah
y'know there is a hallway to get to the fortress or something like that
and it has stairs
I was wondering if you could change the stairs to a smooth hallway, since when you walk up the stairs, the image kind of throbs (don't know if this is the right word, but I think you get the point)
erm... the image kind of shakes, and I don't know about you people, but I hate it;)

My last post was a generalisation of the feedback so far, not a personal shot at you friend. LoL.

And far as info is concerned though, I do know how Hint brushes and Area Portals work. I was once a mapping n00b too and read every tutorial and page reguarding GTK that I could, even on their own site.
And as for chatting, sure, if you've got ideas, I'm willing to listen.
I can usually be found faffing around on IRC when I'm not busy. ;)

Tisk, tisk, tisk! It's a strange thing when mapers collide. :D Sorry to offend you but I knew you weren't considering all possibilities with hint brushes. Look, Let's talk on mirc some time cause there are other places you can put hint brushes that will take care of that little courtyard rendering problem. I don't have problems with the connecting training rooms as far as I can see they were done almost perfect. I'm only suggesting we share knowledge not harsh words. ;)

Okay, let me clear this up.
I have been mapping with GTK for AGES, so long that I can't put an approximation to it.
I know exactly what hint brushes and area portals do and what they are best used for.

Now, look at the training facilities. It would make no difference if there were doors seperating them or if there were hint brushes there because the observation decks are made of glass. Which would nullify any area portal or hint brush placed in the doorframe. I questioned this setup aswell when we first started out.

As for the Vis process, the quake engin and/or sof2map process does not automatically create portals where doors are, rather, it creates portals where walls are, but, seeing as every room must be attatched with doors to get into the room in the first place, it nullifies the portals. And seeing as doors work like detail brushes (they are invisible to vis) you need to place area portals and hint brushes in the doorframes to break the map up. Which is what we have done in the Beta Maps.

Your FPS drops in some areas because of the following:
- The courtyard and fortress are linked together without a door, therefore, the vis draws both areas as one large portal. We are working on a few ways to dramatically cut down the FPS loss.

- The Training rooms are connected via the arches and observation decks, which are made entirely out of glass. So even if we added doors and area portals to the alcoves, the vis would still draw through the glass, because a player can see through the glass.

Remember, these maps are BETA maps. We are always working on them and the final product will only be released when it's perfect.
So please, don't tell us how to map, we know how. These Betas were released to test playability and to give this community somewhere beneficial to train. If you see bugs, report them to us, we know about most of them anyway, but report them just in case.

There are ways of improving the fps on this map. Aphex is right that as you have it the fps can drop for many people down to low numbers in many given situations. I have not looked to see if you're using hint brushes but if you are you are not using them correctly. If you were using hint brushes and using them correctly then fps shouldn't ever drop drastically as they are. I will give you examples. When someone is opening a door fps drop. That shouldn't happen! You can not rely on the vis engine to brake the map up properly you'll have to tell it what is best. The courtyard is a perfect example as well. If the skybox renders for someone faster than 60fps (high specs) then the new courtyard you have should render at 60fps or much better (medium specs). There is no reason why the map you have should bog down any computer. You simply don't have enough pollys to do that. Little note: The vis engine automatically places zone portals at the doors this only brakes the map up when the doors are closed. Hint brushes however will brake the map up and not allow areas that are not viewed to be rendered regardless of what door is open and where providing you did the job right.;)

i've talked to virt and faded about this.

in each training facility...there are 3 rooms. they are connected by a hallway, an an elevetor that leads to an obs deck. they are also connected to each other by side doors. these side doors, to me, hold no real purpose...and they take away from the privateness of each room.

now they are no doors, just little hallways...which, if im not mistaken, is going to make fps worse.

i say just take those sidedoors out, and have the rooms connected by the main hallway, and the obs deck.

Would it be possilbe to transform one this combination of 3 training rooms to the old academy? the map 4 was translated to JA, so i think it must be possibleto just put it there. Maybe we can make the rooms broken, like the roof is fallen down or the pillers in the ceremonian hall were fallen down...
and maybe, just maybe a hidden way to the lost temple? :D
and btw: hidden places makes a lot of atmosphere in such a map.
And for the NPC's: would it be possible to make a group-npc-option? For that we need a bigger room, where can maybe fight 5 Jedi against a couple of NPC's. would be nice group training for us. of couse you need to put the number of npc's which shell come out somewhere. Would be vary nice!! :D

Heh, the bar is cool, and so is the NPC duel room. but the Droids were a bit laggy but im glad its fixed. Other then that, the map really 0wn3d :)

I have just finished compiling and uploading a bug fix for the NPCs.

Expect the JACs to get it uploaded to the Servers sometime soon, you'll have to re-download the map unfortunatly, but it'll work much better. :)
