i would agree with Janus, you're much better off to try to control the action (as a staff user). having a red stancer coming at ya with overhead hacks as you try to figure out how to defend that (best to just get the hell outta the way) is nothing but death on the doorstep.

I'm wishy washy on that. Ever since Dante and I had some duels, I've made a commitment to not being defensive against red stance, and there are a few tricks to getting around it. Still though, its very risky, and if it doesn't work right, "chopped to little bitsies" you'll be :)

Erh... the staff is not overpowered. Go on the attack versus a red stance SS user and you get chopped to pieces in a instant.

That might work in RL Lucky, but in here you would have to be what you name is for it to do so. I always look to see which hand the saber(sabers) are in and the stance looks different. You can change styles with duals to regain your defense though.

I prefer the Single style, and here's how to use that to your advantage...

1) Select Dual Sabers

2) Make sure they're both the same colour

3) Have your saber(s) on Fast (blue) mode, so only one is activated

4) Just start fighting, and when things look bad, bring in your other saber, to surprise the enemy

5) The enemy might not see your second saber until s/he's being attacked by it, so use that to your advantage

That is my ultimate strategy - of course, it doesn't work on NPCs, but still... :P

I'm not sure about that Sid, if you don't attack, how will you find out what works against him/her? Or do you mean, watch to see what seems like an attack that exploits their style's weakness?

That can lead to you becoming superdefensive, which is easily defeatable.

Here's one you use under any circumstances in combat. Never attack an opponent whose dueling style or mentality you don't understand.

3th has a good point for staffers to beware of! Possible counters though are your left and right strafing techniques. When timed right can cut twice into the raised saber opponent of the overhead single user. 3 times if you have the skill, and are able to get away unscathed, but that is a toughie to do.

A note for staff users experiencing a boatload of saberlocks, and it gets freaking annoying...strafing style. A new fighting technique I picked up when fighting those that push the forward key alot when dueling, (Forwards together pretty much make a saberlock), strafe. The key is to make a consistant barrier between you and your opponent.

The ultimate key in dueling, is timing. Identify your opponents pattern, learn the moves that you have that can counter the attack of your opponent, and know when to step forward, sideways, back, and allow your weapon to make the final cut.

staff users beware! the staff is very susceptible to overhead swings. i have an overhead technique that i always use against staff users, of course i mix it up with some other variations and twists, but the main damage i always seem to deal comes from a series of red down hacks with a diagonal leg slash for good measure.

That is my opinion on the matter.

Well I totaly disagree with saying JKA is pure luck lol If it was that why would there be any classes here to teach how to improve ur dueling skills....
Anyway, there is a lot of things to consider when dueling but I thing it would be too long to explain them all here. So I suggest you enroll in some class and you will see they have very skilled trainer.

1 suggestion though: AVOID KATAS!! They are really strong but way too easy to counter.Just do a blue lunge on them and they die:D
