Yoda would definitely win if he was his Episode II self. Well sure it had a basis in the past. Vader had a history. Luke said early on that he sense conflict in him. In any case, Vader had been Anakin. That was his past. And yeah, Palpatine was suspicious that Vader and Luke were going to team up and kill him and take his place. Palpatine and Vader didn't exactly have a healthy relationship. I always just chalked it up to the fact that a Force user's predictive powers were less reliable when the events involve other powerful Force users. Think about it: If we're fighting, and I can see the future but you can't, if I'm planning on move A but see that move B would have a better outcome, then I'll change my plans. But if you can see into the future as well, then you'll know that I'm going to change my plans, and you'll change your plans accordingly. But since I can see into the future, I'll see that you're going to change your plans. Yoda said that the future is always in motion. When a Force user is interacting with people who can't see the future, he can pretty much see all the results of his possible actions and choose his path accordingly; when interacting with other Force users, however, his picture of the future becomes murkier because those other Force users also see the future and change their plans. Presumably a more powerful Force user will have a better picture of the future than a less powerful one and thus usually get the drop on him. I always just figured that because Luke, Vader and Palpatine were all so powerful that they were unknown quantities in one another's visions of the future. Vader's conversion at the end, though impossible by Yoda, Palpatine and Vader himself, of course was unpredictable. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

Javaguy: You cannot predict things which do not have an origin in the past. The turning of Vader to Anakin only happened at the last seconds ... This had no origin in the past, thus Palpatine did not see it coming. If Vader was turning from the beginning, this would have been predictable. However, Palpatine was suspective of Vader since he said: I wonder if your feelings are clear in this matter. But I do not think he anticipated Vader going back to the Light, since even he thought it was impossible. _______________ Visit the Belouve Family Website! Remember that the Emperor also specialized in seeing the future...better than almost anyone else, in fact. He failed to see a few key things that were tied up in Luke and Vader, but for the most part he dominated as a military leader because he always had the element of surprise while he himself always knew what would happen. So perhaps Yoda suspected that Palpatine would get the drop on him if he confronted him. Yoda's predictive powers were far from perfect by his own admission. Perhaps he knew that the Emperor had a particular blind spot concerning Vader and his son. Remember Vader sensed Luke's presence on the Endor moon--"Strange that I have not," was Palpatine's comment. He didn't see that his apprentice was going to throw him into the reactor core either. His powers of prescience were formidable but did have this one peculiar blind spot that Yoda probably knew or suspected. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |
