Well, it's that time of year again! The NHL playoffs start on Wednesday and this year's matchups are the best in a long time! 5 of the 6 Canadian teams are in, with 2 matchups between Canadian teams; Ottawa vs. Toronto (BIG rivalry), and Vancouver vs. Calgary. There's also one "Original Six" matchup; Montreal vs. Boston. Unlike in past seasons, there's more than just 2-3 teams that are favorites to win it all. Here's all the matchups: Eastern Conference ------------------ Tampa Bay Lightning (1) vs. New York Islanders (8) Boston Bruins (2) vs. Montreal Canadiens (7) Philadelphia Flyers (3) vs. New Jersey Devils (6) Toronto Maple Leafs (4) vs. Ottawa Senators (5) Western Conference ------------------ Detroit Red Wings (1) vs. Nahsville Predators (8) San Jose Sharks (2) vs. St. Louis Blues (7) Vancouver Canucks (3) vs. Calgary Flames (6) Colorado Avalanche (4) vs. Dallas Stars (5) I'm, of course, rooting for my Isles, though they're not one of the many favorites to win it all. They do have a good shot to get out of the 1st round. I know our fearless leader, Mr. Doobie, is rooting for the Wings, while Axion, Ford Prefect and Flash will be rooting for the Bruins. Also, Dicemaster will be cheering for the Avs. I know there are other hockey fans here at the JA, so chime in with your thoughts on this year's playoffs! Stanley Cup Fever continues!!! Here's a quick breakdown of all 4 series: Tampa Bay vs. Montreal TB is ahead 3-0 in this series. The play of Nikoli Khabibulin is the main reason they've been winning. They've won 7 games in a row in the playoffs so far! Unless Montreal pulls something out of their collective butts, they look like they're done! Calgary vs. Detroit The Flames have been giving the President's Trophy winners fits! They lead the the series 2-1. Mikka Kiprusoff has been great when he's needed to be, and Jarome Iginla is doing what it takes to win the game. He gets pounded into the boards regularly and even got into a fight, something he's not known for. I Wings aren't totally out of it yet, they need their big guns to start playing better or they will get "burnt" by the Flames. San Jose vs. Colorado The Sharks are surprising everyone this year! They seem to be the sleeper team in this years playoffs. They're ahead in the series 3-0. They've played well all year but still went relatively unnoticed. They're shutting down Colorado's big players (Forsberg, Sackic) and finding ways to beat Aebischer. Just like Montreal, if the Avs don't pull something out of their butts, they'll be playing golf by next week. Philadelphia vs. Toronto Philly leads this series 2-0 behind the play of rookie goaltender Robert Esche. They're also getting contributions from the "Blackhawk Down" line of Jeremy Roenick, Tony Amonte and Alexei Zhamnov, all former Chicago Blackhawks. They've managed to get Leaf's veteran goalie Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour off of his game. It doesn't help that the Leafs are battling a slew of injuries, although that hasn't hurt them in the past. If the Leafs want to at least make this a series, Belfour needs to settle down and get back in "The Zone". San Jose seems to be the sleeper in the West. I got on game 3 right now and they got a 1-0 lead with only about 5 minutes left in the 3rd. They'll be up 3-0 on the Avs if the Avs don't score. HEY!!! Philly is one of my favorite teams! I used to like them before the Islanders joined the NHL because my dad and I refused to be Ranjerks fans! Anyway, tonight is game one for Tampa Bay and Montreal. It airs on ESPN2 @ 7PM EDT here in the States and I'm sure CBC will be airing it up in Canada. Sorry about the B's. Why don't y'all root for Philly with me?!?! Did anyone watch that Van/Cgy game last nite? OMG!!! Calgary was ahead 2-1 at the end of the game and they take a penalty. Then like a minute and a half later, Vancouver gets called for a penalty, so it's 4 on 4. With 6 seconds left in regulation, the Canucks tie it up! WOW!!! Talk about exciting!!! Then the Flames won it in like the 1st minute of OT. So, the Conference Semi-Finals look like this: East ---- Tampa Bay Lighting vs. Montreal Canadiens Philadelphia Flyers vs. winner of 2nites Ottawa/Toronto game West ---- Detroit Red Wings vs. Calgary Flames Colorado Avalanche vs. San Jose Sharks I'll be glued to my TV 2nite watching the Sens/Leafs game. It's on ESPN @ 7PM EDT.
