Strafe-jump Tutorial - by HooDWinkeR | |

OK, I'm going to keep this plain and simple, if you don't understand it, reread it until you do, or try and contact me for a quick session. I will attach demos at a later date to go with the explanations so you understand better what I am talking about. Alright, here's what a lot of people don't know about or don't seem to care about. Your first jump is where you make it or break it, it's the single most important jump in the whole set-up of strafing. [The First Jump] - Face at a 90 degree angle to the direction you intend to go. What you are doing is setting up for the first step in a circle jump. You face at that 90 degree angle and when you start, you turn your mouse to face ahead and at the same time press forward and the strafe key that takes you towards the edge... When you hit the edge you jump. What that 90 degree turn did was maximize your starting acceleration and height. *When I refer to the "edge", I am talking about a strafe-jump training map called "jumptraining" by _dUSk_ which I will later link to. [Beat Strafes] - This pattern of jumping gives you the fastest acceleration possible. Every time you press jump you should be doing two things... First off, hold forward and do not release until you are done strafing. 1st jump - look left - hold key for strafe left 2nd jump - look right, hold key for strafe right 3rd jump - look left - hold key for strafe left 4th jump - look right - hold key for strafe right ... and so on. [The Second Jump In-Depth] - The second strafe-jump is just about as important as the first. If you attempt going backwards like I sometimes do, then it's crucial that you do the first step correctly and follow these guidelines for the second jump: First, I'll recap the first jump in short: First Jump: 1st step: You do a normal circle jump (as explained above). 2nd step: While in the air you move the mouse slowly and smoothly to the left. You should have moved about ~25° to left when landing. Second Jump: 1st step: Jump and continue moving the mouse to left by about ~10° (~35° to left in total) 2nd step: Now the difficult part for the most players comes: Changing in the air. If you reached the highest point of the jump, you switch the strafe-key (you release left-strafe, and hold right-strafe instead of left-strafe) + moving the mouse to the right side: approximately 20° to the right should have been reached after having landed the jump. After this, continue with the Beat Strafes. That is all, I hope this will be useful to some people. As I said, I'll post a link to a strafe-jump training map once it's uploaded, and I'll also add a few demos if you wish to further see what I mean demonstrated. [EDIT] You can download the map here: http://www.mudvain.net/jk3/jumptraining.pk3 [/EDIT] This post was edited by HooDWinkeR on Apr 12 2004 04:43pm. |

here's a new strafe jumping tutorial by commodore, it includes an onscreen illustration of what key strokes apply to the onscreen movements. http://www.own-age.com/vids/video.aspx?id=2634 - as mentioned by kreep earlier, this level of strafe jumping (max distance + speed) is only really applicable to ctf This comment was edited by B!|c_ash on Oct 14 2004 09:33pm. |

rofl Ashyr! I actually found that to be pretty useful, 30 minutes later I can still only make it to the second platform...but that's more than one |

Crouch jumping in Q3 is more useful for control and steering when strafe-jumping, it doesn't really add much more to it than a circle jump does. |

Just to add a note, this is extreme strafe jumping for max distance and speed, most of the people here won't ever need or use anything like this (not alot of strafe jumping in duel maps and rarely in a hurry to cross the map in FFA) This is an excellent description and explantion though, did you mention holding crouch whilst in the air as well ? habbit from my halflife days. _______________ Apprenctice of Jedi Master Ascari (deceased) Descended from a line of great Jedi Will argue any point of view from any side |
