"Realistic/Film" Lightsaber Fighting

I was watching some duels yesterday and I was thinking 'this is really cinematic, very much like the films' but something wasnt quite right.

Afterwards it dawned on me that in starwars there really can only be one hit per fight as thelightsaber would pretty much cut through whatever it hit... fight over.

So i started thinking ... what would be good is a mod which allowed both offensive and defensive combos. so a fight would be back and forth, strikes, blocks and counterattacks. The end comming with a single strike

A master could hold of a beginner without striking back and a beginner could learn defences and still hold their own against the masters... it would be the timing of the attacks and counters which would decide the duel.

...but enough from me what do you think?

Actually, if you look at cinematic fighting, especially in the new prequels, the combatants are more trying to hit each other's sabers than each other. Realistic and thatrical fighting are two entirely different ballgames. Theatrical fighting just wants to look good, realistic fighting is entirely concerned with effectiveness, which often rules out fights "looking good". If there was a real, effective lightsaber fighting style, and you threw two "masters" of it into an arena, it would be over quite fast, as per a lot of fencing matches on the "master" level.

I dont like this idea...fights would be even MORE ping related...
Besides the fact that you already can block most of the attacks manually (yes even red, staff and dual swings)...it just takes real skill and lots of practice...AND A GOOD PING OF COURSE =P

I agree with you, but a mod is not enough.
I'm thinking of a new game, I'm thinking
that the new Jedi Knight must do this.

Well I'm |--| this much closer to the perfect system as far as animations go. I've created a blocking system that has more moves and frames than a saber style. I went from a 5 position 1 frame a piece block per style. to 8 in front, 2 on each side, and one back block at 360 frames. I made transitions for every block to start and end as well as transitions between every block. And thats per style. So it comes out to about 1000+ frames of animation. The code aspect is still in heavy WIP though. But you can check it out.

your alt fire (usually mouse 2) does jack buggery in duels so......

set saber dammage way up.... then apply the parry moves and block moves from the different stances to your alternate fire....different key combos do different block moves...like the different attack combos....shouldnt be too hard to do....

The mod as it stands now is both server-side and client-side. You can't use these techniques on servers which don't support the mod.

Wouldn't the biggest problem be people not having the mod? If one player can block manually, and one can't, there isn't going to be much in the fight. It's ok for this sites personal servers for example, where you could make it a required file for the server, but if you went onto Gamespy or something, you wouldn't find many gamers with it. And if you couldn't use it at times, but could at others, I reckon it would be pretty tricky and a real inconveniance getting out of combo habits.

[qoute]The big difference/difficulty would be imlementing player controlled defence moved ;blocks, blocks and counter attack combos and such[/qoute]

Its being worked on. But some degree of automation is needed because real people don't have jedi reflexes. :)

Luckily its being done by OJP, so it'll be available to whoever wants to use it in their mod.

In addition to counter attacks. There's plan to mix in some melee and grab moves into the saber attack chains.

Of course these will be whole new animations. There just isn't enough current ones.

Man, that sounds sw33t. You'd like, I dunno, press a directional key do move the saber alone. There isn't much challenge in just standing there and having blaster shots deflected on their own, if you could control where you move it, it'd put a whole new degree of skill into the game.:D

oh, I see what you mean...so do an overhead block when the master does dfa? And a side block on a master's swing? Now that would be interesting!! That would be a lot of work for a student...but much more realistic!

Cranking up the damage I dont think is a big problem ..(not that I know how to do it or anything ;))

Yup, I was watching the movies (Ok, this is going to sound really lame lol) and I was like..no way, that was only one hit! He'd never pull that off! He cut his arm off in one hit? No green flash!? so yea, I guess it would be a bit different holding a real saber in ur hands and swinging it at the first thing that crossed your path hehe.

I guess what your refering to in your mod is something that does staff butterfly damage at the slightest touch. I reckon it could be done :) No idea how, but it could :p
