How bad has the JA gotten? | |
Gradius - ex-Student |
Hey guys I was just reading Exar's goodbye speech and I noticed that aside from being stripped of his LK position, he doesn't like the way the Academy has turned out. I was just curious, how different is it now then from when Exar had first joined? How bad has it really gotten, if at all? _______________ - Proud padawan of Kueller. - We really are at the beginning of it all. Sometimes it sucks having good memories. You think about them, and then you look around you, and you realize it's not as good as it was back then. It can be eternally frustrating, especially when the thought 'maybe I should've enjoyed it more back then' crosses your mind. But, there's nothing you can do about it but accept the fact that it was nice then, remember why it was nice - everyone says you should learn from your mistakes, but don't forget to learn from the things you did right as well - and try to make the best of it. I just play games for fun. I stopped trying being the best at them a long time ago (it's a long story). Now, I just look at it as a way to enrich my life (giving me things to think about, learn about the other side of the story, etc.), meet new people and make new friends. |

Yep, most of you can see it by my profile ID (594). It was great back then, I'd do anything to re-live that. |

I find that whether you like this place or not is, just like anything else, a matter of personality on your's and everyone else's behalf. When you enter a community such as this, your first few months will pass as you try to make new friends, be as negotiable as possible, and try not to piss anyone off. Now, in my opinion, that is the critical time for most, since most of your time is spent on perceiving what happens around you. Now, to find the main idea behind this very perplexing post, here we go. I have always considered myself as a outgoing person. A party animal. "The funny guy". "The drunken poet". And other names all my homeboys call me with. When I joined the JA, I took a quick look at the servers, was _INSTANTLY_ greeted by almost all the people on the server, and was instantly shown around the map. Amazing, huh? Well then I decided to pop by in IRC. First I was amazed at the amount of text people wrote in the channel, more than anything I have ever seen. People said hi, and I started my observation. I thought I'd play according to the idea of looking for people who type with similar ideas as you would, and get to know them. Soon I had a list of potential friends in my mind, and it was enormous and still growing. What I am trying to say, is that apart from the fact that I joined early this year, and thus I have no idea of what this was like when Jacen was still in the cradle, this has been the most rewarding online experience for me. In no other place have I met such a great amount of _good_ online friends in such a short time. They truly spice up my life when I join the IRC channel. Now, as a final statement, I just have a question: The place I describe can't really be bad can it? But like I said, it's up to different factors that define your enjoyment here, e.g. sense of humour, tolerance etc. I'm sorry that I've been so absent, but I hope it will change in the summer. Lol sorry, but being nice to people is a bit like an exercise bike....it gives you something to do but it doesn't really get you anywhere. Speaking from a players point of view, the JKII days were better. Before I continue I'm not gonna turn this into another JK:JA bashing post Basically how I play games is not the same as everyone else plays em. Most people play their games for fun for new experiences and escape reality. I don't. I play for the feeling of utterly crushing someone else into the dust, thats how I'm played all my games, I like winning, thats what I do. Like halflife, battlefield 1942, quake and all other games like that before me, Jedi Knight II has held a special place in my heart. Not only is it an uber fps game but its also based on a subject genre which I love When I play a game I analyse everything about it, whats gonna give me the edge ? whats gonna enable me to beat the other guy ? JKII had lots of that in it, JK:JA just seems to have nothing other than what you see in it, theres no hidden maneuvres or exploit moves which give you an edge. Sorry I'm babbling now, I've had a bit to drink, but I'm pissed off with JA, its not as good as JKII and thats a F A C T, not my opinion..... (*Disclaimer* please be aware that the statement made above is actually the writers opinion and not a fact.) _______________ Apprenctice of Jedi Master Ascari (deceased) Descended from a line of great Jedi Will argue any point of view from any side |

Well said Davla. The switch from Jedi Knight 2 to Jedi Academy was crucial though. It matters alot if you like the game or not (e.g. Monty retired because he didn't like it). In that case nostalgia does rule the current experience, but still no reason to talk 'negative crap'. |
Nomi D'Kana - Student |
I think it has been generally agreed that the reasons poeple have said the old days were better are: 1)smaller/more intimate 2)less lamers (due to above) 3)jk2 was the game, and the transition for some people to jk3 was not a good one It is also, I think, generally agreed that JA today is good because: 1)It is a unique community with respect at its center 2)It is an excellent place to learn all jk related skills (not to mention an increasing number of new skills ) 3)It is a place where new friends are found and help is ever present From this I think, some of the negative things are not really negative but rather well deserved nostalgia and much of what made the JA great still remains. The challenge for us now is not to let nostalgia dictate our current experience, hopes and goals for the Academy but rather let the memories (or stories for us newbies) of past glory inspire us and provide the fire to continue strengthening the good elements, refining away the bad and creating a vital, exciting, evolving Academy. As I have said before: this place is the best thing I have experienced on the 'net. Lets continue to share, guide, enforce, teach, chat, have fun and duel in an environment which shapes both skills and character. rant, rant, rant Davla _______________ "The crystal is the heart of the blade. It was fun when it was only JK2, hehe, i remember beeing a reaaaal newbie, i sucked...i probably still do. Anyway, i can say that there has been major changes here, from last time i was here. This time though i have decided to stay for some time and be more active But all in all, this place, the people, the staff, the teachers, the knights, ect. ect. all rule, they are nice to echother, the place takes care of those whoo can't fight or, just want to have fun, wich they couldn't out on the normal servers without getting banned permenent. None want to train a newbie out in the normal servers, thats why this place rocks! I havent played with any of you yet, but i look forward to be P4wn3d by ech one of you so peace out, and Long Live the Academy, becourse the day it goes down, alot of people will be sad, thats why we have to see the best out of the time it is still here, with all the wonderful great people in it!!!!! w0000000000t! |

I think the academy is VERY WELL organized. You have to enroll in classes so that if they get full, no more are allowed to come unless the instructor says so and only a certain amountof people can fit on the servers. JAK+ (Who can only just handle some of the people who break rules) help keep the place peaceful. It may have changed. it may have been a wounderful place and experience in the past, but even though it has changed, it is still a very wounderful place. Thats my oppinion. Rogue ID :604 Yes, I have been here since near the beggining. The Academy had changed alot, in terms of numbers, the site, the ranks, the maps etc etc. I havnt read Exars post yet, but I do feel that the Academy is not the place it once was. With a small known group of students things were sweet. Now with 6000+ members things will obviously be different. Back in the old days you wouldnt have as many law breakers and asshole noobs as before, but its all part of growing and there is nothing you can do about it. In my experience I will add that in the past to the best of my knowledge things like admin abuse and the frequent law breaking and bad behaviour rarely happened if not at all. This reminds me of the Collision Theory in Physics. Its something like this, the more particles, the more collisions, the faster the reaction. In terms of the academy, there are bound to be more collisions becasue there are more particles (students). Tell me what you think.... _______________ I was a child when I joined the JA...scary. |

I consider myself a newbie, that's cuz I haven't seen many thinga around here... From the time I joined (about a year ago, actually a year ago in one month) nothing big has changed. Only staff positions have changed. Nothing considering the way this academy is organised. So IMO for the previous year the JA has been a pretty cool place to be in Of course the time I came here really seems to be better than now, but that's a way too personal feeling and the reasons are personal, not considering the Academy. Rock on JA! - cmad _______________ Your friends of today, are your enemies of tomorrow. |
