Minimum age requirement?

Although I am rather new on in the Academy, I've already made some good pals. Even so, there are some that ruin this for others. Specifically younger members. Now, when I saw young, I don't mean 15 young, considering there are some "older" people here. :P

What I'm talking about is kids 12 and under. At this age, they just don't behave very well on the server. They either complain a lot, or are very annoying. Now I know this is a quite a generalization, but for the most part this is true. There could be exceptions for young persons who are responsible and knowledgeable, but many are just down right dumb/pests. How do you guys feel on this subject?

You wanna know how old someone is? A-S-K him ;) He might lie; he can lie just as easily during the application ;) It's the internet. Everyone can be w/e he wants. If he wants to be 20 (even though he's 10), let him be. If he wants to be himself, let him be :) If you wanna know his age, ask him ;) It's something like the IRC CTCP version cmd. You wanna know his version? Ask him, don't version him. Don't look at me :P I version ppl cuz i'm too lazy to ask and wait for an answer :P :D

The ESRB is there, but we'll let the parents handle that control there. If they don't care about letting their kids play a game that's supposedly too mature for the kids or have determined that their <13 yr old is mature enough to play this "violent horrible" game then why should we stop them from joining here. Besides I think our community here is a lot better for younger gamers than most of the public servers out there.

BTW Manta, you need to read what people were saying. There is no way to determine if someone would be mature enough before they join the academy. And I'm not about to ban some kid after he's joined just because a couple people think he is too young and immature for our "oh so prestigious servers." Not gonna happen.

Not really for the age thingy...I think there are a lot of good people here who could become a good influence to these young players....take this opportunity to show what REAL Jedi are like...not just all sabers and show them by example...I'm sure something would eventually rub off.

(thats my pennys worth...:P)

on a litigiously annoying note, there should probably be a checkbox that you have to check when you join the academy saying "i am at least 13 years old", since the game is rated for 13+ by the ESRB (that's the game rating board here in the US, i think the EU has different bodies that do the same thing.) you never know when some dumb ass lawyer will draw a connection between school violence and some online game. oh wait...:P

just throwing the (sometimes) annoying reality of our US justice system out there as something to think about, in a cover our asses kinda way.

maybe it would be cool to have a new thing in the submitment, like there are "first name" and "last name" so why not "Age" i mean, by that we all know how old we are right:)

Very true!!!

The 1st few times I met Luke Skywalker, I thought he was at least in his twenties and he was 14 at the time I believe.

I don't think an age requirement is necessary, if someone's being a jerk on the servers/IRC/forums, they'll be warned/kicked/banned. Plus, it is true that it would be impossible to enforce.

(beware: randomness ahead) The padawans in the Star Wars universe begin their training when they are 2 yo. They discriminate in age by saying people are too OLD to be Jedi.
I personally think that it is a bad idea to have an age limit. This is a place for fun and learning. Anybody can act up, not just young people. Besides, what are you gonna do, kick some of our existing members who are too young? Who wants that to happen?
And as has been said before, there is no real way of enforcing said limit, short of face-to-face interviews with the Council on application. And that would be a problem for anyone not living in the same state, let alone country, as one of the council members!

why thank you, Aron :P

but if we gonna put a age thinge, there is NO way to control it. you cant say:"wait your to young, your not allowed." in this place. and btw i have many friends who are younger then 14 and they are all acting mature enough. there are just some kids who arent mature enough. and for that reason you wanna put a age thingie?
what about the kids who ARE mature with the same age? thats just unfair.

There will be no age requirement. It just won't happen.

Sure, I can understand the ideas it might get rid of "annoying kids", but from experience, I can tell that the largest part of troublemakers are 15, 16+.

We have some "young" people in here, that are often mistaken to be twenty years or older, and the other way around.

I am explicitly AGAINST an age requirement. It would be impossible to enforce and it is also very discriminating. If someone behaves bad, tell them so. In a worst case scenario, they can be kicked/banned. But it's mostly the whole attitude of it: "No, you can't join our club-for-mature-people, cuz you're under 12 and will behave bad." Let everyone in, let them prove themselves. It is way below us to discriminate people because of their age.

I'm not for an age limit now, even if when I started I was for. This is for two main reasons :

1. As Buzz said most troublemakers are teens between 14-20.
2. I'm pretty sure that people who thinks they are more mature (or are) must make all they could to give example. Like asking everyone on the map before to use guns in a room (except for corpse cleaning ;)), prohibite laming, greets everyone when joining... Such things could encourage younger player to develop a good attitude.

My 2 cents

Don't give us that smart-pants look, if you had meant what you wrote then you wouldn't have made this post. If you too think age doesn't really matter about this fact, then you wouldn't have made an age requirement thread...

EDIT: If the guy doesn't show decent attitude, he can always be banned later ;)

Actually, putting on an age requirement would be dumb... Everyone can put on a fake age; it's the internet, remember? Plus, it's more up to the person, than the age, that matters.

I am 12, so my vote is going to be 100% NO. But if this did happen, it wouldn't matter to much if you had to be 13 or more because I will be 13 in about a month. :D

a few problems though...

how would you know if the kid under 12 is responsible and knowledgeable if ya don't let them in the server?

how would ya know if they are truthful about their age?

what about tolerance and comradery?

You're saying put an age requirement on to keep out little kids that don't act the way you want them to. The problem is how are you going to enforce it. If they know they can't get in unless they're over 12 they'll put down 13. There's also no way of telling by the age if the kids are going to be "well-behaved" or not before they're even here.

And honestly I'm not that concerned with the little kids around here, being little kids. I've had more trouble with the 15-20 year olds being brats. And since that's the age we seem to have a lot of trouble with why not make the academy ages 6-14 and 21-99? That will really cut down on problems I think.

Mind saying why it's stupid? You seem to be very responsible and polite on the servers Monkai, so you would not be excluded. This is to weed out the kids that think since no one knows who they are on the internet, they can be smacktards.

If some of you would read my post, I said that it would be fine to allow people who show responsiblity and maturity besides their age. My point (although obvious) is that we should put a minimum age on applying to the academy.

luckily for us manta, it's usually just a temporary problem as most of the well behaved ones stick around and the annoying ones get tired of being chastized for their continued infractions and get the message after a bit. either that, or they change their tune and modify their behaviour to act a bit more mature. i think this actually one of the most interesting and sucessful aspects of the JA, we actually do get people to improve their interpersonal skills :)
