Proper CTF Ettiquette for Academy Members?

I had the good fortune to join the [ks] Academy server tonight while it was running CTF-Bespin Airshafts.

I'm a die-hard CTF fanatic. I got my first taste of it in Quake (the first and the best Quake there is, IMO), and I've been hooked ever since.

I'm a defender by nature. I guess the main reason is because no one else wants to. I've found that the majority of the players want the glory of capturing a flag, and sitting in a base just waiting for people to come by gets kind of boring.

But, from Quake to Unreal Tournament to Team Fortress...and then even to Jedi Knight II...I've been a dedicated CTF Defender.

What I saw tonight was a blend of tragedy and triumph, and it was entertaining.

When I joined the server, the Red team was up by a score of 12 to 4. Blue was getting trounced in a bad way.

The auto-join put me on blue. Fine with me, I do love a challenge. I tossed on my ctf force setup, loaded up my repeater, and anchored myself solidly in the base.

I had a pretty good run on defense. I worked hard to try and organize people, not sure how many listened. Nightcrawler and La Magra were two that helped me out a bit, kudos to you guys for being true team players.

Anyway, one would-be flag thief after another entered my base, and while I'm not perfect...on occasion they did escape with it...many of them found themselves on the wrong end of a repeater grenade, or sailing down into the abyss underneath the flag.

I run a very tight defense, and I get fired up about it. Anytime you get near my flag, you're in my house, and I'm going to make you regret it ;)

Anyway, thanks to a total team effort, the final score of this absolutely grueling match was 20 to 13, with Blue coming from way behind to claim victory. Between myself and Nightcrawler anchoring the defense most of the match, and Chainer capping flag after flag, we pulled out a very fulfilling victory.

However, it wasn't all fun and games.

One member joined up and was put on...or knowingly joined...the Red team.

He found his way into my base many times, and got his hands on the flag more than anyone else on his team in the latter half of the game. He was a very skilled runner, and if he works on his offensive abilities a bit more, he'll be one heck of a capper.

Apparently though, he didn't like the fact that I was using a gun to take him out. He didn't like that ANYONE was using guns.

All of a sudden, I and others are labelled as "noobs" by this fellow student because we are using guns to defend our base.

For me, that just meant the bullseye on his chest grew even bigger.

But I did want to address that point...when you join a full-force-guns-CTF game, expect to get shot at.

If you get shot at, don't whine about it. Shoot back. Actually stopping to call fellow students "noobs" when they are using a legal offensive/defensive tactic is just flat-out rude, and not what this place is about.

CTF in and of itself is a very demanding game, the intensity level is far and above anything you'll find in an FFA environment. When played in a sloppy fashion, it'll be the most random thing you've ever seen.

But let one side get organized and in sync with each other, and they will start to dominate. Get two well-organized teams, and you'll have one of the most rewarding game experiences you've ever had, win or lose.

When you go in for CTF, don't go in expecting honor, one-on-one dueling, and kindness. Expect an intense, gritty fight that you can get pumped up about, and then laugh about when it's all over.

But those are just my thoughts. I'd love to hear what the JAT's and others have to say about it ;)

I know it's rare that we ever play CTF here, but I'd like to get some feedback from people on this matter.

Rob, the abuse of Push/Pull on the pit is mostly done by ppl that use mainlly force and saber to fight. If you take that those ppl will only have saber to defend themselfs.

And what is JK2 with no force and only guns ???
Its QUAKE and we dont love this game because it looks like QUAKE but because of the force, saber and SW ambient.

Saber only against guns is just not too fair right ? You will find out that not getting pushed/pulled/kicked into the pit is very very easy.

1st - Use absorv
2nd - Dont jump or absorv wont be efective
3rd - Dont walk on the edges
4rth - Watch both sides before crossing any bridge
5th - Dont take the usuall shrtcuts that let you exposed in mid air over the pit.

Make a couple of games using those force powers, you will find out the best spots and timing to use them, then when you get back to your usual gaming style you will know the places to avaoid and how to escape them.

CTF...love it, live it, hell...I even play it paintball style at my local PB arena...just one thing I don't like and do not get me wrong people...it's not just you guys...it's the general populus of JK2 that does this and is just one of my pet peeves...

The abuse of pull/push in the pit...I know it's the easyest way of getting rid of the flag carrier and hell...I've done it a few times already...but it is very very annoying when you have the flag and cannot move because the entire blue team is on your ass and pulling you back to square 1. I would understand this with sabers only but with guns on...you can not dodge people who fire. I just find it somewhat annoying and cheap.
suggestion: If we play with guns on...maybe have force off or something...it would make it funner and more competitive...

(but this is just me...so guys don't get offended...please...you guys are the best and I'd be hard pressed to find a better gang of JK2 players anywhere)

I just wanted to voice out my thoughts....but anyways...ROCK ON...let's leep playing hard...and one of these days...maybe a gang of us could team up and take a CTF tourney or fight in a ladder...

CTF is just :jj:
2 bad I was not at ks at that time :|
I played CTF on the same server for a long time, a NL server, with saber only and Jedi Knight force, and i must agree; it's very hard to be defence.

About Jedi and guns: None of the old-school Jedi used guns but I think it is so cool that Luke used a gun and a saber in Episode V. I guess you could say it showed a slight lack of faith in the force but you just can't beat the cool factor of fighting with a light saber while you have a blaster in your holster.

About the CTF classes: I would just suggest that if it is saber only that you make it a CTY instead of CTF because the Yalismari limits the carriers abilities to some degree.

I love capture the flag games. If you ever took to x-boxes and got 8 people to play Halo you know what I mean. Guns need to be apart of the game. I personally don't like to use guns but the game would be boring without them and besides what would be the point of being able to deflect or push the shots back at the shooter if no one has a gun.
PS:Jace's idea is very good.

Unfortunately I wasn't at the CTF match, kinda bummed about that :P. CTF was always my favorite game type. The good ol' days of Unreal Tournament. My skill was more in defender than flag carrier as well (used to be a really good sniper, still kinda am, just not in JKii ^.^;). Oh and Jace, a CTF class would be a great idea, but I'd think it be better if you kept the guns (don't know why, guess i'm use to it that way =/).

Sorry Salty, I just mentioned the guys that I'd spoken to in the game who responded to me ;) What was your name in the game?

Jacen, about the only thing there I disagree with is the no guns deal. I think CTF is something that pretty much requires guns.

I've played a lot of saber-only CTF servers, and it's almost always unbalanced towards the offense. A flag runner doesn't have to kill anyone, he just has to get the flag and get out.

The defenders, however, have to kill the flag runners, and unless you can score a DFA, it's tough. Defense is nearly impossible with saber-only, if not for force powers it'd be a joke. At least with some of the force abilities it can give you a chance.

However, seeing as how it's a class, it'd probably be okay to have some saber only games, just so people can see how it plays.

I honestly think you need to have guns around for the best possible game though.

<Also off topic>

Humm, I see that you guys are in to CTF.

Would you like if I changed one of my classes to CTF practice ?

Here are my terms:

1 - No pre arranged teams

2 - No team scripts

3 - No cursing or insulting (I wont give warnings, if you curse or insult anyone consider yourself kicked out of the server)

4 - No offending binds

5 - If I catch anyone using scripted moves he's out of the server

6 - Im pondering the use of weapons. But I think the fair thing to do is to alternate the use of them bettween classes. So everyone will be happy.

7 - <EDIT> No typing /kill after being pushed or pulled to a pit so that your opponent wont score with your death. Thats another reason for being kicked out of the server.

So what do you think ?

I'm sorry to be so strict with the rules but these cover allmost every thing that anoys me on public server.

I like to play CTF on public severs - not too many CTY servers out there so can't say much about that, but IMHO sounds interesting.

I've noticed that if guns aren't allowed the game is probably a bit unballanced against the defenders. At least if there's a very capable runner on the ooposing team or maybe I'm just a sh***y defender. If guns aren't allowed you need more guys defending you're flag. What do you think?

I used to be a big ctf fan, Team Fortress was the game I loved.

However, Team Fortress got old quick because of whining, especially guys that didn't like facing defenders. I used to defend the flag because many people didn't, and got called camper and all kinds of other names because I knew about strategy. Now I don't play ctf anymore.

yeah, i was red, and the most i did as orginization was to go and try to back 'im up when i heard "the red team has stolen the flag"

I also think that capture the- ,more than team ffa, strenghthens teamwork. for team ffa, just cut, and hope that an enemy will get hurt. if not, then you can't hurt your own team anyway.

ctf/y DOES need teamwork, and it improves (or disproves) relationships, inter-team and intra-team

why do i start writing essays about jkii, but i can't be made to write one for school??

CTF yesterday was refreshing. I was on the Reds and we held out for a long time , however, I wish we had some co-ordination going on our side like the blues had , may be we would have held out.

Maybe academy teachings need to spread out to Team FFA , CTF and other types of gaming.

CTF is by far my favourite... though I havn't tried CTY and would like to as I think it could be better.

I have only played one game where the teams were equally matched and it was a really intense experience. I can't say that the team I was on was as organised as it should have been. I think the game would've been even better... much better in fact had the teams been really organised... but then I guess that's what clans are about. For now I visit the public servers hoping for another good game of CTF.

BTW I never use guns... perhaps after I've played this game a bit longer I will start to use them more.

Yeah, after we went from CTF back to the normal FFA-Jedi Academy level, he pretty much continued to show that he needed an attitude adjustment ;)

He didn't go too far over the line though. It was nothing I'd report him for, anyway. Just one of those deals where an admin might toss a slap in his direction just to keep him in line, had there been one present ;)

CTF is generally fun. I was not there, and it is probably a good thing too (im horrible). however this 'player' which you speak of should have been more respectful to you, even if they did find it cheap that you were using guns - unless its mutally agreed upon, or if the server says otherwise, guns are in. If you have a problem with guns, stop playing. Neway, just look at it as a more intense training session - because that is what it is :P

hmmmmm

yes, i was there. (remember, i killed you a few times:))

that player was- whoops, almost let out that it was- eek

enough joking, yes i was there.

i heard 'that player' (if so that player must be named) say 'noob' a few times, though i wasn't paying enough attention to get the context

and though 'that player' is my friend, i must agree that 'that player's' ctf attitude COULD use some improving

then, i never got the the flag platform, much less to the flag, so i wasn't much help to the team

except, i seemed to do very well at making the jaks at least CONCENTRATE to kill me :)

'that player' is, though, much better than me, at least in the ct categories. and, a bit better in normal ffa

well, on a different note, ctf-ing with fellow academy members was fun:) i hope to do it again soon.
