Just An Idea....Please leave Feedback

Okay it has come to my attention that we have some servers that are rarely used. So I came up with this idea. What if we converted one of them into a JA public server representing the academy. It could be a place to mingle and for people to learn of us and see what we have to offer. Of course just cuz its public doesnt mean the rules wont apply. It could be a place for wannabe members to get used to the atmosphere we try to uphold here at the academy. Of course if its public chances are we will get a lammer here and there but it will also help us get accostummed to dealing with lammers so when u get that one stray member gone bad lamming on the PW-Protected servers we have, productive reactions will occur instead of hostile, chaotic situations forming. It can be a place To test what we have learned against the masses of the JK gamming community. It can help us introduce people who are awaiting approval of their application with a tour of the map and a crash course in the rules and etiquette of the academy so when they get approved they have less of a chance of having an "I didnt know" incident. Perhaps once in a while a JAK+ would even hold a class on the server to show people what we offer in a class.
It would be our way of extending a hand of friendship to the entire JK community. It can be a place for them to ask questions of clarification before they join suchh as "Isn't the JA a clan?", Many questions and misconceptions about the academy exist and this would be a great way to answer/clarify them. :) Well That is my idea please leave feedback :D

EDIT:
I will add quotes of comments that make points i didnt think of that support this idea.

Quote:
We could enforce eticate while encouraging fun and learning , and extending it to the wider JK community providing a sample, but more importantly as a safe haven in a decent enviroment for all those interested. This would be an exaple of the academy showing social responsibility and that i believe would be a great gesture :) This server could also be used by such teams as the Aurochs CTF and TFFA team to have home matches. And we could organise tournements that extend beyond the JA, giving the JA a presence within the greater JA community. -Jaiko D'Kana-

I say like this, I wouldnt have found the jedi-academy if it wasn't for my brother.
If I hadn't gotten it from there I would probably get her but finding the JA's public server (if we had one).
I'm not a person that surfs around a lot on the web looking for stuff, I just take what I need....going to a public JA server would be like

- Woah is there a place like this where ppl don't lame u all the time!! woah, I want to join:P
frankly....it's just P.R:D

I don't think it would be hard to "admin" a server like this. There is no real need for a JAK+ to be on the server 24/7. Sure, Knights are peacekeepers and diplomats, but not donut-eating security offers, gazing at a monitor. If something bad happens, there is almost always a person to disagree with what is happening; if that person gets on IRC, there is pretty much always a ranked member around who could hop on the server.

Awwww Kit don't do it, I only started this thread to discuss the possibilites and peoples views on CONVERTING one of the unused existing servers. You shouldn't spend your hard earned money on a server for us, spend it on whats important to you and if nothing currently is then save it longer and make it grow more :)

Now with regard to the lag issue, i thought of a comment for it, not a solution, but something that will get you thinking :)

My idea was converting an unused server of ours to a public server. People brought up the lag issue. My response to that is simple. If the server were used for what its there for, then the lag would be there anyway, we easily have enuff members to fill up every server we have and then some. Making it public doesnt mean we have to increase the max clients, its just like making the server actively used by us. So what your saying by saying we shouldnt do it because of the lag is basically the same as we shouldn't have the server at all cuz when the time comes that its used, there will be lag :P I cant believe how long it took me to catch that :P <---- SLOW :P :D

this is not about a computer, its about a connection. all Kensas ja-home based servers are based on the same computer AND connection. when they are busy, it gets laggy, coz of the increasing load.

It's easy to register if you know that the JA exists but unless you know about the JA and go to the web site people wont be registering.

How much would is cost approx to buy a server that will run sufficiently well ?

While its a good idea, its not fesable with our current resources, as WW and aratan said, more lag. Thats true. the Sever it self can handle it, but the network the server is on cannot handle it.

So unless someone wants to buy us another server... I doubt it could be done. So yea, I am with Hardwired on this one. It would be different if you had to pay for a registration here, but you dont have to do that so why is it so hard to register? :)

Well, I dont see the troublemakers as a big problem. If they start laming, people can hit spec until they get bored and leave. People can control themselves...or if someones laming everyone else will gang up on the lamer...or it could turn into a ffa.

MORE JAKs??!!?? We have 35 admins already! Although, half of em aren't ever on the servers, but still, that's alot of admin power floating around.

you know, I didn't really think about this yet, so feel free to shoot this down very hard, I won't mind :)

What if we increase the number of JAK's immensely, to keep peace better?
or
We make some sort of Public Admin. (A PAT?:P) And then we could perhaps make the Admin password on the Public server different, so you can login there, but not on regular servers.

These are of course, just ideas.

Ofcourse a public server will have more laming.

That is for sure.

But we can look on the other side too, and notice we have something to offer for the "outsiders".

One other problem to look at would be having to enforce the rules on a pub server. A pub server is about 1,000 times harder to keep under control then a locked one. We would have to constantly monitor it to make sure it doesn't turn into a rat's nest of scum and villiany while also monitoring our own servers.

field trips were great, but difficult to organize. they're like the most difficult classes to hold. people run late and lose track of you, u get on a weird server thats too full to handle all of the students bla bla....
yet they were great :D

I remember that SO CTF raid we did with Shannon, Aeth, Magra and a lot of other grea players... :)

anyway, I think the community is big enough, and we dont really need extra, special advertising.
