It looks like we have a writer for EP VII. His name is Michael Arndt and he wrote "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Toy Story 3" You can read about it here;

I could do without old man solo tbh! I want to see them take Episode VII in a new direction - the Star Wars universe is huge in scale and rich in subjects and scenery. Give us a new saga! |

I, for one, am pleased to see new live action films in the star wars saga. I have been waiting for 7,8, and 9 for 30 years now; ever since GL first talked about them. Empire was great and I forsee a similar take on the series. All the regular team is still there, and the possibilities for direction are tantalizing. Steven Spielberg, Micheal Bay, Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson, Joss Whedon, Ridley Scott, to name a few. He did mention elements of the EU being involved but I would prefer an original story myself. That has always been my understanding of it FM, although I have seen others claim it was debunked.
The EU is canon though, they just had different levels of canon. Lucas signed off on that even if he, personally, wasn't a follower of the EU. Basically it was understood that if GL ever made post ROTJ films they would be considered G canon and overwrite those bits of the established canon as necessary, but otherwise it remains all connected. Examples of this can be seen with T canon (the Clone Wars) changing stuff that happened in the books. I mean didn't Zahn come up with Coruscant or something? _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Also, side note, while I would say there is a strong chance of Mark Hamill appearing, there is little to no chance of Harrison Ford reprising his role. He has repeatedly and publicly stated his disdain for Star Wars and how, although recognizing how instrumental it was to his success, he has wished he had never done it. I don't really see a man who has said this things returning to his role. _______________ |

Interesting points on this. (And I can't be bothered to do dig up and provide sources but I promise if you do your fact checking you will find I am mostly right on this) In AGE OLD interviews, George Lucas had stated he had plot synopsis written out for 12 star wars film films (This was back before Return of the Jedi). As time went on only 9 of the 12 saw expansion into 10+ page plots. As it became increasingly apparent that making a single Star Wars film took a hefty toll on him, George Lucas decided to only end up adapting 6 of the 9 plots into full blown screenplays. That said, George Lucas has repeatedly said that the EU is not cannon. It does not fit in with the plots he had written and if he ever did release a 7-8-9 trilogy, it would be the story that HE had ALREADY come up with just not adapted into screenplay. Rumor has it that Disney is looking into using these original plots with George Lucas as creative consulting for the adaptation into screenplay. Will this piss off a lot of people by destroying Canon? Absolutely, but I think it has a decent chance at being epic. Lets see where George Lucas had intended to take Star Wars originally. _______________ |

Quote: I have to admit I'm a little wary of these upcoming movies. Walt Disney producing Star Wars may have a negative impact... a new company doing Star Wars could bring a new atmosphere with it. I hope the new trilogy won't be like the family type / feel-good movies that Disney is known for. I do think it's a good move from George Lucas to sell his company so that more Star Wars movies can be made.
I was thinking the same exact thing Dash. I'm excited and very worried about the new Star Wars movies, and games. I'm afraid Disney got inspired off the newest "kid-like" prequels. It may have not been Lucas's best move to sell his franchise, but I'm also happy Lucas wont be directing the next Star Wars film. He had too much power over the prequels and they were soo slapped together. Lots of people say Empire was the best SW movie and it wasn't directed by Lucas, go figure. They better not conflict with the expanded universe, Disney better do their research on the Star Wars timeline before throwing crap together. Sure Disney has had their way with the newest Marvel movies, but I'd prefer a darker theme to Star Wars... like a movie about SITH, that'd be a very dark un-Disney like movie. Make a movie about Darth Bane! I hope they dont get caught up with the movies timeline, i want to see pre-movie stuff. There are many great stories. I hope they dont just pick up the franchise and make it ''their own''. _______________ New -[DE]- Site. |

Kensei posted a link on the TOR boards that said it had spoken with an Insider claiming the new Trilogy (+?) will be an original story and not based on the EU.
That could mean a number of things: Reboot, retcon the post ROTJ EU out of existance, Marvel-style use of EU material in a new story retconning certain bits, or simply setting it somewhere else or somewhen else that somehow doesn't affect the established canon. Now, Star Wars canon is a bigger deal than most sprawling franchises but there is still a good chance we could see HUGE revisions here. I suspect we will see them use certain popular elements of the EU in their own original creation, like a superhero film that draws in elements from a selection of different comics etc. But who knows. There is always a chance we will see Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprise their roles in a story set far in the future I suppose. Mostly I am feeling like Eica on this, at least until proven otherwise. As it stood Star Wars was going no-where fast (and I -like- the Clone Wars show) and it really is a good thing that Lucas has let it go. Now I shall go back to dreaming of a Jos Whedon directed Star Wars film. _______________ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield | Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken | Rhaiko D'kana - SWTOR EU Guild Co-Founder | Is it what the teacher, teaches? Finally, think of what this could mean for Star Wars games. With new movies coming out new games may be produced as well.
