Man, the cruelest of creatures... -Sared - May 13 07:26am | |

May your thoughts and prayers be with the Berg familly this week. Thier eldest son, Nick Berg, a civillian contractor, was captured by Iraqi terrorrists, detained for an unknown period of time, and then beheaded. The execution was publicised and videos are trickling through the news networks. This has only brought more pain and suffering, two things the world needs a bit less of if you ask me. I can only hope that the memory of Nick can be honored properly. |

Buzz, it's because it's 'normal' terrorist do things like that. Our media spread the news, and have some background articles on it, but there isn't much repetition slash attention because everyone already knows the terrorists are bad. I think Joseph Stalin once said: "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic." That is so true in this case. When there is a report about another five soldiers killed or wounded in action, it is likely it was as gruesome as this. I happened to see on the Oprah show (don't ask) soldiers with burnt faces - and I mean horrible wounds, shot off legs and arms, and they were all eager to get well and head for Iraq again. They were the numbers. Now this guy is dead, and it's suddenly a tragedy (nothing wrong with that, it just proves what Stalin said), and you think there should be more attention given to this. But everyone already agrees on the fact that the terrorists are bad, they don't need to support that with more facts. I hope you get the point. No need to prove the terrorists are bad anymore, so not (too) much attention to these single tragedies. |

well sared and icco, i still dont agree. its not the event it self i speak about, nor do i want to downplay anything. The Jedi Academy is a virtual place for ppl who likes life NOT in the reality for a moment. They are here becouse they want to step down from RL-business. They are here becouse they dont want to think about the brutal reality. If they want to discuss RL-things, the global-board is exectly the right place to do it. The news section is made to get news about theAcademy. I dont agree with you icco, that everything we should know should have a place in the news section. Im sorry that you dont read other news than the ones from the academy, if you are interestet in RL-things, you can go to thousends of other information sides. And if you would go there, you would have known about what happend. as sared wrote, the news are full with it. i dont want to discuss that case further in that thread becouse its totaly off topic. so, please leave me a comment on my profile if you want to answer me. greetings, daid _______________ Founder of the Fisto Family -|- Member of the mighty FiZZsters!! -|- Owner of the second Bail prize for "BAIL RULES!!" -|- I'll never forget you Jaina! -|- Owner of the one and only autograph of Smily -|- SMILY RULES -|- Owner of the 1000th Comment of the great Kueller -|- Big brother to NarCosT Fisto, and ShadowFax . -|- Proud Padawan of Kueller -|- Sir Daidalus Fisto. I'm sorry, I thought you wrote that the prisoners in a way deserved the treatment they got. The execution and kidnappings do get a lot of attention, but i'm sure the government influences the news we receive a lot. _______________ Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam |

Quote: Buzz and Darth Mobility, I strongly disagree with you saying that the inhumane treatment of Iraqi prisoners by Americans should be tolerated because the things the other side does could be considered worse. There is not, and there can not be any excuse for the way american soldiers humiliated Iraqi's, those who are responsible should be punished severely. Instead of "screwing" the Geneva convention, I suggest you think about why our countries signed it, and why we should all be proud we did. It is there for a reason, and just because the other side, the terrorists violate this important treaty of human rights, does not mean we could do the same. The US already made a big mistake by moving into Iraq without permission of the UN, the US policy in the Middle East is clumpsy, in my opinion the US can't afford anything that will increase the hate in the area for the Western World. People who do not respect the Geneva convention, and think they can do anything they like without permission of the UN, the world, a procedure that is the only way to a better future are for as medieval and barbaric as the terrorists. You misunderstood me Ulic. POW's should be treated in accordance to the Geneva conference. The treatment those prisoners received is not right and shouldn't be tolerated. Those who gave the orders or allowed it to happen should be punished for what they did. My problem is the political outcry of the events. People are using this prisoner scandal as politcal fodder and a way to justify their opinions on how things are in Iraq. I'm probably just as disgusted and disappointed about it as anyone else but I'm not jumping up and down with joy because I can use it to criticize the government like others. This public execution that was shown has not gotten the attention these photos have. They can't use it in their politics as easily so it doesn't get as much coverage. Just like the treatment the other people being held by the terrorists are receiving. It doesn't get the same amount of coverage, and we do know what's going on because they film it and some have escaped to say what's happened. That's what I don't like. You'll probably even see the FCC decide to fine all the news agencies for showing these photos because of how dirty they are. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. Those who seek power and control of others, no matter the level, no matter the intentions, should never be given it. |

Quote: They removed your dictator, they removed your oppression. Now we have a war against terrorism, and to my mind it is a justified war. How can't it be a justified war? Aren't we allowed to fight for a world without wars? There is good in this world, and if we don't fight for it, sooner or later, it will go away. What happened to mr. Berg was cruel, and heartless. Yet none of us lay the blame on the Iraquain people or the Islamic Belief. We blame it on the terrorists who did it, and in my mind, they deserve to die. I couldn't agree more. |

Daid, this event has been hitting the fan politically in the same way and with the same kind of publicity that, say, Timothy McVae, or 9/11. It is not the fact that the man was executed, though I am in no way trying to downplay that. The implications of this, the reasons why, the motive and cause are why I posted it. There, go stick that in your pipe and smoke it for a while. _______________ I'm crazy, not stupid. This comment was edited by Sared on May 14 2004 05:33am. |

I dont know if you relize but about half the academy doesn't read the forum so most would not know about this tragedy. on other terms, i am sorry to hear that someone died, i do hope that this conflict ends sooon so we dont have anymore deaths of innocent people. _______________ "this is Icco. Halendor, you make the very point I was going to make. Although I agree everything is sick and twisted, we - the civilized part of the world, not just the USA - need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Sinking to their level is...well...their level. And then where are we? I'm very sorry for not only Berg, but many others who have had horrible things happen to them...no matter what the nationality. Quote: Yeah with the pictures of the inhumane treatment of the Iraqi prisoners, we have about every person in the administration apologizing for it while others in Washington are high fiving and congratulating each other about one more reason to hate our government. I never heard of any other country apologizing for: The World Trade Center, the thousands of other terrorist attacks around the world, the treatment some of our captured/killed soldiers received at the hands of Iraqi soldiers (in case you forgot about some of those pictures from a year ago), and the death of this man. The prisoners you see being humiliated are remember the former soldiers in Saddam's army. Men that mistreated Iraqi citizens more than likely and committed who knows what else. And we're saying we're sorry for doing humiliating things while anyone they have captured is in a situation ten thousand times worse. I haven't watched the news but are the people who were so outraged about the naked pow's making the same uproar about this horrible thing? What differs the good guys from the bad guys is that the good guys don't do the things the bad guys do. It's in any movie or book that is about the battle between good and evil. The good guys always save their enemies when they are helplessly hanging from a cliff, and even don't regret it when they get slaughtered by them later. The USA has assumed the role of the good guys, and therefore they are very limited in what they can and can't do. The terrorists can do anything they want because they are the bad guys. If the USA start doing anything they want to, they become the bad guys too. And that is why there is so much uproar about the mistreatment by the American soldiers, and so few about the crimes commited against those soldiers. Sure, it is understandable they did it, but it doesn't make it right. And didn't Jesus say something about loving your enemies? Here's the time to practice what you preach. |
