The Lost (but now rediscovered) Fable Of How Aron Became Cool This all took place three or four years ago, even though it feels like a lifetime to the casual reader. The setting is the quiet town of Nitwick, most reknown for its abundant crops and oil-disposal plants. The beating heart and center of activity of Nitwick is Calamata street. It is a quiet lane surrounded by brick houses that all look alike. The gardens are well-trimmed and the windows are washed more then twice a week. The street was governed by a gang known as the Wiseguys, and its elected leader was a local bachelor called Thugnut. Thugnut was a huge boy, measuring over 15" biceps and a back so broad that the smaller boys of the gang would hide behind it when the authorities arrived after their mischiefs. Thugnut didn't care for anything or anyone except himself and his own affairs. He was a brutal leader with nothing in mind except to wreak havoc every where he went. Calamata street was badgered by Thugnut's gang for years, and the neighbours would covet in fear everytime they heard the all-too-familiar honks of the Wiseguys' trickbike horns. There was one person, though, who didn't call himself a Wiseguy. In fact, he would be the only one ever to have stood up against him, and his story is as marvellous as any old Celtic warrior legend. That person was Aron. Aron was a jovial character, whose smile would light the dark street even when the local electric company failed yet again to restore power to the rusty old streetlights. Aron sported a comfortable disposition, and had but few traits that the neighbours could gossip on. Aron despised the Wiseguys. He could never go on with his affairs in peace, since Thugnut and his cronies would throw rotten vegetables into his window, aiming to distract him from his work. One day Aron had had enough. He created a cunning plan to disperse the raving gang. He finetuned his plan for days, until one night he deemed himself ready. It was yet another one of Nitwicks dark and gloomy nights, when the mists from the mountain descended upon the streets, giving the paved ways of Calamata street an eerie, almost ghostly atmosphere. Thugnut's gang was on schedule yet again. They arrived precisely as the streetlights blinked on at nine o'clock PM. Honking their horns as usual, they boys of the gang drew a bunch of last week's tomatoes, and started chucking them at Aron's house's windows. Suddenly Thugnut gasped. The basement window of Aron's house was open, and the gang could hear the most beautiful singing through it. Thugnut creeped to the window and looked in. Sitting on a stool in the middle of the basement was a shady character, but undoubtedly a girl. Thugnut, reputedly a cold and heartless character, was softened by her singing and her good looks (since even though he couldn't see her clearly, Thugnut was sure that the girl was beautiful. If you had a voice of an angel, you surely looked like an angel, Thugnut thought). The rawdy gangleader decided to creep in to see the girl. He motioned to his gangmembers to stay on the street and keep throwing the vegetables to distract Aron from Thugnut's expedition. He slid in through the basement window into the darkness. He couldn't see a thing, it was pitch black. "This is how the miners feel every time they go into the coal mine" Thugnut thought. He whispered in the darkness "Lady, who sings so beautifully, I am in love! Your voice has enchanted me, and now I desire nothing else except to keep you in my arms and compose the greatest piece of love poetry for you. Come to me and embrace me!". The singing stopped. Then, in a blinding moment, the lights of the basement flared on, and the room was engulfed in laughter. On the stool in the middle of the basement sat Aron, with a wide and condescending grin on his face. All around Aron were all the members of Thugnut's gang, whom Aron had lured in with similar tricks. On Aron's lap was an old gramophone, which was playing a vinyl disc by Ella Fitzgerald. Thugnut gasped. The gang members all laughed and pointed at him, calling him names like "Lord Byron" and "Mr. Casanova" and "Sappy lover". Thugnut had ridiculed himself in front of his cronies, and as he was in the peak of his embarrasment, he heard a creaking sound. Before he could even blink, he was covered in a sticky substance, which turned out to be tar. Oh what a sorry sight Thugnut was! Half-expecting what to come, he made a dart for the window, only to notice that it was closed. And then it came! Thousands and thousands of little white feathers flying at him from his gang members. Oh what a sorry sight Thugnut was. He sat on the floor and started crying like a baby. His status as the coolest guy in the block was crushed in one, tar-and-feathery moment. Aron approached the dark and sticky shape of Thugnut. The gang leader was sure that Aron would do something terrible to him, and pleaded for mercy. Aron merely gave him one of those cool looks that he would be known throughout the world for, and told him to take a hike. Without glancing back, Aron turned to the gang members. "Hear me out, Wiseguys. Thugnut, your leader is no more. He has become the very opposite of what he proclaimed to be, a saggy, good-for-nothing piece of shrimpfood. I will take his place, and no longer shall we be called the Wiseguys. From now on, we are the Gang SoCool, and we shall be known around Nitwick as the 'ones who are so cool that you just can't get cooler'." In one night Aron had transformed from the mild and modest character he had always been, into a figure so cool that all the dictionaries had to be rewritten. Today, the town of Nitwick is but a faint memory in the minds of those who study lore, but as you walk around the spot where it existed, you can always hear the muffled cries of Thugnut, sounding eerily throughout the plains: "I was the greatest, but that one day even I had to bow down before the embodiment of coolness."
