Little known moves

Wasn't sure whether this was for the JKII forum of the academy one. Made a final decision on this one as it seems appropriate.

Little Known Moves

There are a lot of hidden moves in the game which most people wouldn't know unless they were taught by someone. Most of the normal moves are easy to find out about or do by accident. I grade pretty much all the moves in 4 lvls (I've made thisup on the spot so gimme a break if it swrong, but I thought it made me sound wise:P)

Grade 1:
Normal swings

Grade 2:
Specials, combos

Grade 3:
Double spins, Parachute, My reversal double spin :P (zero, acidic, blade_knight and fandango should know what this is)

Grade 4:
Counters, triple spins (yes I'm as shocked as you, but it can be done)

Thats all I can think of right now. I think that many of the grade 3 and 4 moves should be taught more in class, although from evidenve its clear that even some of the trainers don't know these. Some of them are just to look good with no real use (triple spins) but some are generally life savers which will enhance your gameplay, even if only slightly (counters, parachute).

Just felt like making this post as its something that been on my mind almost since the game came out. There seems to be not enough structure (at least for me) to the moves, it all seems to be a bit too random. Once the moves are given merit, skill levels will be easier to destinguish, and a form of martial arts can be formed (its a lot of work and it sounds stupid, but it is very posible......deja vu from another thread ?)

Riddled with mistakes...now you sound like me picking on deathbycornchips. :D I wouldn't be surprised it had some mistakes if it was only a draft, anyway.

Not talking bout mpegs, as thats a pain anyway, they could be done as demo files, and thus remain small.

Earlier today fizz sent me a copy of the handbook. Its alright, and I can see the angle they were going for, but its riddled with mistakes and doesn't quite go into the detail I was expecting. Fizz insists that its incomplete so I'll let him off :)

Apparently he said its not his and its some other blokes, kikka was it ? I'm sure if we ask him nicely we can expnad on his current work. If I can get permission, I'll correct all the mistakes and holes in it I see and e-mail it to you guys.

fiZZ - Hook me up! I'd love to see that handbook. It's easier to work and modify something that already exists than try to start anew. And I see your and MoS's point about screenshots. But maybe not a whole bunch, just a few to show certain things. What of, I have no idea right now. Just leaving options open.

Jake - Sorry Hollywood, I think your 15 minutes of fame might have to happen at another time. :( We need to worry about peeps that don't have broadband. Downloading an mpeg would be irritating for some. And some moves are just sooooooooooo complicated that you just need it shown to you live. :D

Guns? Definately!

Maybe not one of the first things to cover but we should have it eventually.

Screenshots of every phase in a move? I can see SOME cases where that would work. Strafe jumps for example. For a combo, it would be confusing.

hm I dont think screenies are sufficient since timing is the only problem.

I'd say we do a JA Handbook basic edition and a special edition that shows these l33t moves/acrobatics.
we could as well do a special level edition that shows up some hints/hidden spots in some maps.

I was hoping to go full in depth, All the moves and everything, demos of the trickier ones where an explanation isn't enough, or pics (series of screenshots, showing each stage of the move, like a flicker book, very kool)

If we do this we gotta go all the way I think, or at least do it in stages, not do a bit then say "theres more stuff but most people know that anyway" or "can't be bothered to list everything this move can do, thats enough"

well, actually there was an attempt to create something like the "JA student handbook" True Phate, Kika and myself participated, but that effort seems to be broken at some moment. I got a version of it, its rather small and attempts to explain simple moves and behaviour for the new student. maybe we create an advanced version as well just to keep the size down and to keep readability.

I did a little thing like this for my clan once, only involving the little known moves though :)

Made demos and stuff of how to do them, back when the light stance lunge could be used in the air, forming the first parachute.

I'd like to actually be hands on in this, i.e. starring in the demos (what can I say I love the spotlight)a cheif information source, along with some other guys here who I know, know alot.

Would we do this saber only or guns as well ? Perhaps just start with sabers as that is the most used and most complex and then maybe move onto guns if theres a demand for it. We'll have a chat in IRC next time we're all on or organize a meeting and set down what we're gonna do.

What we need:

1. A rough idea of what we want and how we want to organize it.

This will develop with time and consideration, but for now it seems to be a grouping of brief articles on various topics that anyone can submit and leave comments on. The articles would be arranged by difficulty level like Jake mentioned earlier or by type (ie. Dark side force powers and their use, from selecting the powers right up to grip kicking and speedrage) I'm thinking that trainers would post articles, but students could send their own material to the JATs for evaluation. A place for demos and/or pictures to accompany the articles would be very nice as well.

2. People to assist in writing, testing, making demos, advising, and publishing.

This would be an ongoing project with various people keeping it maintained and updated. I don't know what topics we would start with. Last time I checked, the Academy doesn't pay very well, so we'd need some dedicated volunteers.

3. A place to put it and an attractive, easy to navigate layout.

Going to be one of the more difficult challenges. We'll have to play this out some more.

4. A cool name. :)

Academy Archives? JA Bible? Skills and Tactics Compendium? Up to you guys, really.

So? Any thoughts? Anything to add? Am I crazy?

Silencio - Sure. Any help would be appreciated.

MoS - Sounds good to me. There's bound to be some disagreement among people as to "when is the best time to use thus and so stance." We could provide both/multiple sides of the story, and people could pick and choose and try them all out. I'd just want to make sure we organized the comments in some fashion so they were "filed" in whatever chapter/section they were related.

Demos...hadn't thought of that, but I'm new here so that shouldn't be surprising. That's why we'd only be the compilers/editors...we don't know everything there is to put in it!

Thanks for the comments so far, ppls.

I would like to see something along those lines but with a place to add your own comments and opinions after reading it.

Demos to go along with certain topics would be nice as well.

MoS - Yeah, it is a lot of work for them. Which is why they shouldn't have to really worry about it except giving the go-ahead and reviewing. Info wouldn't have to be sent to reside on the server, people could just send it to me personally so I could roughly organize it, delegate responsibility, edit, rewrite, etc. The JA server would be used for the product itself and it's continual revisions. I appreciate your offer to help.

Jake- Definitely want to split the workload, if this goes. Don't worry about where to start. I've got a lot of experience in doing this type of thing. Get info, spread it out on the floor, group into categories, subcategories, etc. Kinda fun, actually. And we'll be learning a lot from a lot of people. About people reading it: they don't want to, no big deal. It's not being forced on anyone. I would just think that it'd be nice to document a lot of our stuff so people could "study" and do their own homework () if they wished.

I'm going to start a new thread and ask people to come over to this one and read what we're talking about. I'm not sure your thread heading says it all at this point in time.

Well, we could do something where people can submit tips to a certain area of the site.

That's a lot of work for DJ and Doobie. They do more than enough as it is.

We could write it up and ask C1 to expand on the Academy script that has some info about special moves like that.

I dunno. Whatever we do, I'd like to help out.

Yeah I'd be absolutely thrilled to set this thing going, and the more the merrier. Split the workload = less for each person, 2 heads are better than one, yadda yadda yadda.

The problem with these things that involve writing and research:

1/ This does take time and some people will get bored (I won't I love anything JKII related, specially the knowledge side)

2/ I am afflicted with arare illness which means I have no idea where to start. Any piece of coursework or assignment I do, I'm never sure what to do first. Once I'm started though, I'm going all the way till I've written everything I know about (which is wuite alot beleive you me :D)

Just found this thread, Jake, and you have my brain smoking...

Hmmm....

You know, I actually would be interested in some sort of JA Bible (if you will) that documents various moves and keystrokes. It would have to included *when* moves are best used (as noted by others below). Kind of like a working, living text that is continually updated as people get the time to add their two sense. JAC/JAT/JAK's and other 1337's can have their knowledge disseminated to the wider JA public IN ADDITION TO, BUT NOT TO TAKE THE PLACE OF classes and online interaction/practice/random whuppings.

I'd be more than happy to try and help compile/edit something like this. I don't have as much time to spend playing JK2 as some of you other guys, and thus can't expect to get to a 1337 level for a long time. So maybe I could contribute to the JA in this way. I've written a Masters thesis and several journal articles, so I'm used to organizing, writing, and compiling information of this sort.

I'm thinking JAT's could provide their homework they send home with students, and others could briefly jot down their thoughts/ideas/moves etc. and send them to me for the JA Journal (or whatever we would call it). It wouldn't be something printed, but would be only available online to JA members (hidden until you logged in) divided into chapters etc. If there were things that only high-level players should really mess with, maybe you guys could lock those chapters for JK's (only) and up. Whatever you deem appropriate.

I think there is a lot of potential with this idea. This could really help JA students get a more tangible grasp of our JA knowledge-base.

This type of idea has been swirling around in my head too, and has only recently coalesced. So if I'm rambling (which I am) I'm sorry. :D

Jake, others, let me know what you think. If anyone else wanted to work on this thing with me, I'd be all for it. Help me collect information, write, edit. It could be like a permanent super-journal that stuff is added to on a regular basis. JA students can check in on it every so often to see "what's new," what has been most recently written/posted.

Ok, I've gone on long enough. Maybe I'm full of s***, maybe not.

Your turn. Go.

Lol I knew it was only a matter of time before buzz had another go at me :)

I forgive you buzz.

Its just I thought this post was a good idea, grading the moves and such, it jsut all seemed to make sense. If any of the JAT's want any help in teaching, or learning the moves themselves, just let me know. Mind of sin, the triple spin, hmmmmm, well next time I see you on a server I'd be more than happy to show you, or post on my profile what times your on etc. Teaching old stuff is good, but when new stuff is discovered its even more fun.

One more point to buzz here, so the rest of you can stop reading....................................................................................................................................................Right buzzy baby, I can see you rpoint about it being JKII related and that they are all just moves. The thing is, alot of people consider these glitches and exploits in the game, along with things like throw pull, CTF suiciding, parachuting. I wanted to know if people respected these moves as legal, before I started saying "lets teach this its really kool". Thought it was better just to make a suggestion.

I'll stop discovering new stuff now as you'll prolly just argue with me anyway :P Just kidding man, lighten up a bit.
