Well, this game comes out at the end of the month so i thought i would start a thread for it to see who else is interested in it. :)

For those that do not know, the Elder Scrolls games began back in 1994, and are the creation of Bethseda Softworks. They are Action/RPG's, set in a fictional world of Tamriel, and each game is unique in story, and location, sharing only small things in common plot wise, although they all add to the history of the games.

I had not heard of them, until 2002 when they released Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind for the PC, the game was enormous, and gave huge amounts of choice in what the player did, right from the character creation onwards. Needless to say i was impressed. Anyway the game spawned two expansions, and has become hugely popular online among modders, partly due to its unique construction kit released with the game. It has also since been released on the X-Box.

The New game is designed for the Next-Gen consoles (360 etc.) and of course is also coming out for the PC, for which the specs are:

Recommended
3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements
Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB Direct3D compatible video card
and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

**Notes on requirements**
-There is currently no option to disable pixel-shading in the game, so if your graphics card has trouble with this you might have some problems. [Thanks to Masta for this]

The game is even bigger than Morrowind, literally huge in size and scope, and still contains all the customisation of the previous game (a lot more in fact), and its free roaming nature. The graphics are amazing. Also the Dev team have made the NPC's a lot smarter, using a new Radient AI program, which the producer refered to as a combination of Ultima 7 and The Sims, this results in some nice moments.

Unlock Print Screen (PRTSCN) button
There is a setting in the INI file:
bAllowScreenShot=0
change to:
bAllowScreenShot=1

There are two INIs, one in the game folder called "Oblivion_default.ini", this is the one it uses to generate the REAL one....
My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini

Edit the first one if you want to default to having screenshots on by default for all users. The settings it uses at runtime are the ones from My Documents folder.
After you mod the INI file, you can press PRTSCN button and Oblivion will write a BMP file to your game folder.
-To bring up the console press the tilde key (above tab)
-Typing TM into the console toggles hiding of all menus (for taking screenshots)

Available Factions/Guilds:
-Mages Guild [returning]
-Fighters Guild [returning]
-Theives Guild [returning]
-Dark Brotherhood [New](more 'evil' than the honourable Morag tong, shame i liked the MT)
-The Blades are back, again as part of the story [returning]

-The Arena [new] (lets you fight a variety of NPCs. Even after you have "completed" the Guild there will probably still be fights waiting for you at the Guild. You will also be able to bet on the fights that take place in the Arena.)

There are other factions although no others seem playable, they include the Imperial Legion, the Nine Divines (a temple group), The Mythic Dawn (Daedra worshippers), the Warf Rats (think Cammona Tong but smaller perhaps), and the Necromancers.

Updated
-There are other factions out there you can join, i don't actually know how many, but i recently joined one that was not one of the originals stated. These hidden factions are probably smaller overal than the Mages/Fighters etc. though.

Misc info
-Werewolves will not be returning initially although you cannot rule out another expansion.

-Vampires however are back, and with a new biting animation ;)

-Spears, throwing weapons (e.g stars), and crossbows have been removed.

-Each of the 9 major cities has a house you can buy and have for your own. You can go around in town and buy different things to decorate your house with, so you have places to put all the stuff you collect. One of the houses that you can purchase is initially haunted.

-go Here to find basic info on the skills in ES:O

I think it is very possible to beat tough places as a mage or thief. Granted, a mage would have way less problems since his damage output is bigger then any bow, plus he can buff himself with specific spells like "shield" or anysort of "fortify -" spells.
However, i have heard of a very efficient tactic that certain players with stealth-builds use in order to beat tough monsters. Its a combination of using "invisibility", sneak and an item/spell that paralyzes the enemy. Basically, you paralyze the enemy, use invisbility and sneak behind him for a 4x critical strike. If hes not dead after that one, you just repeat the procedure. I never tried that tactic myself, so im not sure if its really reliable or not.

And yea, i left the main quest rather early and wanted to finish all the factions and other quests first. I like to finish the main quest at the very end, mainly because im hoping to see very hard enemies at level ~30 when doing the main quest, which is gonna spice things up a bit =D

I recently got irritated by a few bugs : my horse wasnt stabled it wondered into the wilderness (yes it is MY horse), I fell through a tavern door, and my map was displaying the wrong markers. All seems fine now, but it ticked me off. I need to do some side quests, I am further in the main quests than the walkthroughs and everyone else I have talked to yet I am only level 15, need to go do summat else! :)

My build:

Level 15

Wood Elf

Sign of the Thief +10 speed, agility, & luck

[Stealth]

Favoured Attributes:
Willpower
Agility

Major Skills:
Alteration (currently 75)
Marksman (53)
Light Armor (61)
Blade (41)
Restoration (41)
Acrobatics (41)
Sneak (64)

My attributes are currently:
Strength base 54
Intelligence 46
Willpower 73
Agility 84
Speed 75
Endurance 40
Personality 30
Luck 62

Seriously considering remaking my character as well, not only is this character having trouble in combat situations he gets involved in way too often, but i have advanced too far in the story really and getting attacked by spies all the time, with huge oblivion gates open outside most cities, is a pain in the rear when you are trying to advance as a mage and thief.

I only really got into Morrowind on my second playthrough so its not a huge surprise just irritating heh.

yes i do... actually i prefer to skip exp than to... die :(

my current build is like this :
Stealth:

Agility
Willpower:

Hand-to-hand
Acrobatics
Alteration
Mysticism
Light armor
Marksmanship
Sneak

now whats wrong with this? :P
i picked hand to hand for defense...lol
its useless skill for me... and will get even more useless when as masta said bandits will wear full daedric armor sets.
mysticism... well yeah tbh i didnt read the description of it. i thought its exactly like it was in morrowind . it passively recharged enchanted items.
whats more.... my skill in illusion magic which was at 5 when i started the game is higher than mysticism and hand-to-hand.

so im a bit disappointed with my skills choice and with this enemy improvement system. you are forced to use the skills you used most...

Yea i heard about a Unicorn once. I dont know how it compares to a black horse in speed/reliability, but ive heard its a unique horse which attacks everyone who has their weapon drawn out.
Oh and saz, you miss out on a lot of xp when you just run past everyone etc

Well personally i'm not liking my current build of:

[Stealth]

Strength and Agility

Athletics
Acrobatics
Blade
Block
Light Armor
Marksman
Stealth

I thought it looked good when I made it, and i've buffed strength, agility, speed and endurance mainly (with agi and speed being the best, str about 7 or so behind, and endurance about 10-12 behind) and have my strength, agility and speed in the 80s now. However, i've come to realise that i'm very disadvantaged in combat compared to a heavy armor wearer, as well as someone who specialises in combat in general, and the stealth jumps just don't make up for it on my end. So yeah, going to remake my character as a combat based one since i'm in combat more often than I am getting stealth openers, it'll also help now that I know more about the levelling up system and how to maximise favored stat boosts. One week's effort gone, woot :p

Edit: I didn't think the in-combat dodge earned from journeyman acrobatics was too great either, and found it better to just run around in combat, which was a bit of a let down.

Quote:
The scaling-system has its pros and cons. Personally, i think its a good idea, but very poorly implemented in TES4. As a low-lvl char there should be at least a SMALL chance to encounter a cave with extremly high-lvl monsters and loot. Afterall, thats the main reason why i always used to loot every cave and fort i came across so far...its because of possible hidden uber loot that makes your char become totally omgwtfpwn!

Also, there is an extremly overpowered daedric artifact which you can get at level10. It makes the security skill totally useless and impossible to up any further. So yea, im practically semi-screwed since i have security as a major skill and picked up the artifact already X|

That would be the lockpick that never breaks i presume.. yeah heard about that. Nobody commented on my Unicorn, i thought i was cool :(:P Meh black steeds are overrated in my opinion!

Oh and yeah thanks for the tip Saz, i do attempt that when there is no other choice, however its costly in arrows and i hate spending gold on such things. Found one good way of killing tough enemies such as 10 or so mythic dawn, a will-o-wisp etc, is this electric staff i picked up, i'm guessing its not uber (only a mere 30 shock dmg) however i does the job at level 15 for me.

I agree with Kain on the fact that stealth has it harder in combat this time, i certainly begin to struggle against more than 1 average opponant. I also agree with Masta that i used to enjoy stealing amazing stuff from rich people or high level dungeons, which dosn't seem to be around as much anymore.

Still i have a unicorn, i'm liking that. Only problem with it is that it has a habit of wondering off once i get off. :P

I really doubt their stats are fixed, mainly because creatures like skeletons never used to summon stuff before. Also, even though im level 27 now, im still occassionally encountering minor monsters like rats and mudcrabs. So i guess the monsters in specific places wont be replaced by higher-lvl ones, and specific monsters wont go beyond certain attributes. Otherwise we would be facing daedra-summoning, 120dmg-fireball-throwing, paralyzing and invisible mudcrabs near end-game, which is just plain unrealistic.
Bandits or Highwaymen for example WILL get stronger each time you level and i doubt theres a cap for them. Im expecting bandits with full daedric armor once i hit level 30 too =x

i doubt it really... the basic necromancers im killing didnt go any stronger... i can kill them with two arrows now. same with rats - do they go stronger? nope. so if im strong enough to see the strongest monsters... they cant go stronger coz their stats are just fixed.

Yeah Saz, I agree, a stealth build is screwed in Oblivion. I'm level 16 at the moment, ready to go to level 17 but trying to tweak the stat boosts a bit before I do, so I saw 3 goblins. Yeah, goblins, woohoo, easy armor upping and slashing etc! In my elven armor set, wielding a glass claymore, with 81 str and 6x(can't remember exactly) endurance, if I run in kamikaze style, they kill me. Sad, i'm doomed to kill everyone running like a woman with my bow from now on, which -sucks- in small tombs with low roofs. Be alright once I get expert marksman I guess, knockdown =D Until then, may my feet be faster than my foes... and may Sithis buff me a lil bit for that extra edge in crap situations or something >_>'

Not sure if this is considered a spoiler since it doesnt relate to any quest nor any storyline, but i managed to find and kill the legendary Umbra.
She (yes this time its a grrl) was the only worthy enemy i came across so far, thus i considered her making my slave. I used this bad-boy in order to raise her from the dead and make her follow me around. Afterwards, i decided to practice my marksmanship a bit, and my newly gained servant was very eager to help me out with it. Well, i think i got a bit better with bows now <3

kthxbye... seriously my char cant take this! i tried sneaking through and that would work quite well but to investigate things further i must be visible...

Appologies for the double post but have some new screenies:

A dank room in Bravil
Faroe looking slightly tougher for once
Posing :P
Elven sword
Obligatory Horse shot (stolen one, naturally)

The painted horse above ran off after an altercation with a minotaur, so i went looking for a new horse to *cough* borrow i found a Unicorn, i think they are fairly rare, not sure. Forgot to take a pic will upload one tomorrow.

Edit:Meh some of those pics came out really small but cannot be bothered to fix them right now.
