Fifth Aniversary Tournament - Sign up now!

Greetings,

it will only be a few more weeks until the Jedi Academy has officially been around for five years. For an online community, this is a very long time. Some of you may remember the first days of the Academy, others have joined in somewhere along the way, like myself. In any case, the upcoming aniversary is quite an achievement of what I think is a great community to be part of.

This should not pass by unnoticed. Hence, there is going to be an event which will bring back some of the old days' feeling:

A Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast Tournament!

This time it is going to be there unless something very extreme happens. I would like those who are interested in taking part to sign up in this thread. Signing up is rather easy; just let me know you are interested and I shall add you to the list of participants below.

On June 7th, 2007 the Jedi Academy will have been around for five years exactly. This is the last day during which you can still sign up. Everyone who signs up after midnight, BST, will need to be a reserve. My plan is to launch the tournament on the eighth.

Next are a few details, so you know what you are signing up for.

General
The tournament will be a one versus one double elimination tournament. It will consist out of a mixture of NF and FF duels in the Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast game. You can sign up by posting a comment below, from May 27th until June 7th.

Rules
These are the basic rules to the Tournament. Although this is likely the way the Tournament is going to be run, changes can be made if absolutely necessary.

Rule #1: All matches must have a referee, though this can be any member of the Jedi Academy. (JAK+ overseeing matches in JKII will probably be hard to find.) The referee's decision is final.
Rule #2: Some attacks are not allowed. Thus far do not use spinning.
Rule #3: Contact your opponent as soon as possible.
Rule #4: In case there is no duel, it is up to the referee who proceeds, based on the amount of effort the duellers have put in to arrange a match. The one having made the most effort will advance.
Rule #5: Complete the duels in the prescribed order. (The order shall be in the upcoming thread.)

Prizes
Although it is always fun to have prizes, there has been some trouble with them last time. I shall try my best to arrange some, but I will not guarentee anything. Afterall, the tournament is a celebration of the Academy's fifth aniversary.

On another note, there is interest in JKII classes. I would love to cater for a few, but on the one hand I lack time and on the other I lack expertise. However, there have been JAK+ in the past who used to teach JKII. If you like you can leave a comment in this thread, stating which class you would like to run. I shall put one up for you, which you can then teach. We will all learn more about JKII in preparation for the tournament, and having ex-JAK+ teach JKII classes will bring back some of the old times which is pretty much what this celebration is about.

Please feel free to sign up. Below is the list of participants thus far:

I'm going to try to make the brackets system like the TiT's, with the Europeans and Americans facing each other first. Even if we would hold all duels on the same JK2 server anyway it will be convenient for arranging times for matches.

For now let's try to keep the duels inside the JA, which sadly limits us to one server for the time being. I'll discuss this with the rest to see if it'd be a good idea to have some JA Tourney matches outside the JA. Personally, it doesn't sound too appealing because I'm not sure if the circumstances will be equal due to mods. (I need to look into this.)
I would also like the JA Tourney to take place inside the JA, because it's mainly a celebration of the JA's fifth anniversary. It may even attract some people to come over, watch, and play the game, raising the activity on our servers.

However, I understand European participants (indeed, the majority) would like to use low ping servers. It would also make the matches more equal for all participants. I'll see what options there are and get back to you on that. :)

Concerning the server, is it necessary for us to hold all of the matches on the american JA one? The lack of an euro jk2 server would make that a bit inconvenient, considering that the current majority of participants are european and would have to play with a high ping etc.

On that note, i really liked the idea of the TiT's euro/US bracket system, since that makes it easier for the participants to schedule their matches accordingly, and avoids unnecessary server-switching due to ping problems in the case of intercontinental matches. Are you going to use a similiar system, or will the brackets be set independent of the players location?

The idea is that, starting at June eighth, there is going to be one round per week. That should give most people a chance to hold the matches without causing the Tournament to stall. (It could get stalled due to a single match not taking part.) Hence the first round is likely to be held from June eighth - June fifteenth, the second one from June fifteenth - June twenty-second, etcetera. Actually, how do you guys feel about that?

That sounds greeat:D
