The "Official" JA Logo Contest | |
3th - Retired |
i wanted to call this the "official" JA logo contest, but i think i should get a JAC blessing first (edit: yea, got DJ's blessing!) anyway, we now have a Logo Contest folder on our msn groups collection. so get out your copy of illustrator, photoshop, corel draw, ms paint, or whateva you got, and give it a rip. also if anyone wants to submit something but is too lazy to sign up for the ja photo collection group then just e-mail it to me and i'll post it for you. (please keep the size reasonable.) visit the msn groups folder here: JA Logo Contest i put in a few images i knocked out a while back for the JAA when aphex was making that site. nothing fantastic mind you. please feel free to post stuff for feedback and comments from the public here _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! DJ Sith - Jedi Council |
Well we've discussed it. Thanks for waiting everyone. I'll be frank. None of the entries really caught our eye. SO... This poll has the top five entries. We're going to leave a poll open for one week. The winner of this poll will work into their design into something we want to have on our stuff and work it into a format that can work with cafe press. Here are the entries. Now get to voting. 1 2 3 4 5 _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |
DJ Sith - Jedi Council |
To sweeten the deal a little.. the winner of this gets one free item ordered form our new store with YOUR logo on it. This can be a shirt, mug, thong, lunchbox, or whatever. I don't want a logo that shouts "HEY LADIES DONT COME NEAR THIS ONE! HE'S A JEDI". I like minimalism in a logo design. Some tidbits. _______________ My car is made of Nerf. here are some ground rules approved by DJ_Sith himself: 1. DO NOT use any copyrighted material. this means, no in-game screens of any Jedi Knight stuff. It would be ideal that whatever you create is all your own stuff. Also, be aware of any copyright issues on fonts you may have downloaded or acquired. Most font makers will let you use them however you like, they just like to know when they get used on something that's getting produced. DJ cannot stress how much he doesn't want you to use copyrighted stuff, so DON'T DO IT! 2. Make sure the idea (logo/text etc.) is reproducible at a high resolution for printing. (I.e. don't make a small image that looks good on the screen but will get all blurry and crap when blown up to a decent size and put on a T-shirt.) The ideal final format will be EPS, PDF, or some vector graphic format for ease of scaling. 3. The logo will go on a white (or light colored) background primarily, check the CafePress site for a full list of products. http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/products/viewall.aspx (Ideally the logo should have NO background to it, but for preview purposes, please put it on top of white.) 4. The idea behind the logo is that it be in line with a corporate identity. I.e. meaning this logo can stand alone or have supporting text. It should look good when reproduced at a variety of sizes, from a bumper sticker to a wall poster. 5. The JAC's would like to see a variety of quality ideas, so treat this initial go around as brainstorming session. DJ and the JAC's have very high standards that they'd like to see upheld by representing the JA with a design that can stand next to the classic logos of our time (the NFL, yes the national football league, is actually a good place to look at how logos today can become powerful iconic statements. For example, compare the new Patriots logo to the old one. http://www.logoserver.com/NFL.html Newer logos such as the Texans, Falcons, Titans, and Patriots show how a logo can be relatively simple, yet make a bold statement.) Ideas will be refined and developed by anyone that wishes. The final decision does lie in the hand of the JAC's. But as usual they listen to everyones' thoughts _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! This comment was edited by Orion on Apr 28 2004 06:18pm. |

Nice Aratan, but if printed on a t-shirt or mug, I think people will be wondering why the loop of the 'J' is cut off. |

OK, here are my thoughts on the recent submissions. Mobility, I love the new concept, but I have a few suggestions: - make only the saber stick out of the box, and put the text in the box, the 'JA' text is a bit blurry now, and maybe it will bring more unity into the logo; - DJ said he didn't want the logo to scare people, so perhaps the slogan 'the place for jedi training' is too direct. Your version of it doesn't quite grasp all of what the Academy is, in my opinion anyway. Maybe something like 'a jk3:ja gaming community'. Ataris, I love the 'The Jedi Academy' part, but the slogan looks a bit too much 'slapped on'. Maybe you should try to intergrate it more into the logo. 3th - I assume you created the minimalistic logo's - I really like the 'another minimalistic logo', but I think it needs some more text. |

Ataris, I love that logo bro. It looks sweet. The only problem with the "waves/force" is that yo wont be able to duplicate that on thread for shirts, hats, mugs without it costing major cash. These logos have to have PATHS that the print company can work from or else the rendering wont do the design justice and it will become all pixelated and such. But your logo pwns hezzeh! Looks real nice! -DM- _______________ One Day, it will all end. |

Hiya! The abstract logotypes are cool, the only thing that's kinda sad for them is that they don't relate to the JA in anyway.. I think a logo should identify us, not confuse people with the thought: "what the hell does this have to do with anything they talk about" And yeah, I know my logo's only a text.. But I tried to make the waves in the background symbolize the very basic of our cause, the Force, with its many different paths for everyone and everything.. Everything still connecting to the "Jedi Academy" -text.. This is my vision of how the system works here.. Hope someone likes it. _______________ [ Honorable mentions: aph3x | Milamber | Bail Hope Belouve | Jaiko D'Kana | Rosered | JediEthic | Mike/JJ/TheKing | Kensei | Dane | Gradius | Thomas Skywalker | Pink Floyd | Setementor | Steinin | Odan-Wei ] [ Owner of: MetaDust's 500th comment! | Eica's 700th comment! | Pink Floyd's 666th, 999th, 1200th and 1337th comment! | DarkRyu's 400th comment! | Redeye's 1st comment! | Cow's 1111st comment! | Rufusan's 75th comment! | Wicek's 3300th and 3400th comment! | Dash Starlight's 2000th comment! | Piccolo's 3400th comment! | Takaru's 300th comment! | Senor Hat's 900th comment! | Rytandus' 4160th comment! | The first ever awarded, the original, the one and only, Catphin Award!!1 ] "Music expresses that which can not be put in to words but can not remain silent." wow very nice... since i love ur work I wont say any more for threat of being stoned _______________ Come on now, every Generation X boy wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Is it because he was a whiney farm boy from some backwater hack planet? No, it's because he was a FREAKING JEDI. He could block lasers with his lightsaber. He could levitate droids & rocks & crap with his mind. Come on, he choked two pig dudes with just a simple gesture. He cut off Darth Vader's hand and kicked him down a flight of stairs. He got his @$$ zapped by lightning from the geezer Emperor, stood up and said "s'at all you got b!tc#??" |

nice man, much more abstract. i like the font used for "the jedi academy", looks good with those 2 colors. i think it would be nicer to fill in the saber a bit. it so extremely white, maybe you could put some elements in it, dunno few blue spot to make it look more like a hilt..? *fhew long scentence..* good work keep it up! -NC _______________ Little brother of Daidalus This comment was edited by Narcost on May 10 2004 10:11am. |

hey James, thanks for the entry! i'd say there's a little too much emphasis put on the "the" though. the T just seems to dominate the layout, which i don't know is so appropriate since the place gets abbreviated as "JA" more than "TJA." the color choices might be a bit strong, seems a little too far towards high school colors, being so bold vibrant and exciting. i think DJ is looking for a little more subtlety. i like the font though, and the bevel/cutout effect could be a nice touch if you punch it up a bit or play with it somehow. i look forward to more _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! |

A few idea's: The JA is a close community. I thought of people standing shoulder to shoulder 'carrying' the words The Jedi Academy. All abstract though. Abstract Jedi in the pose that you normalle have in-game with single saber. Along the lightsaber (vertically) the URL and over the Jedi (below the lightsaber), the text The Jedi Academy. Just a few thoughts I'm a total failure at making images myself, but I love to edit them and slap some text on it. |

i completely understand my fellow desinger bro if it were not for a world of rich and diverse tastes life would be pretty damn boring and we'd all have to design exactly the same! what fun would that be!?!? i'm looking forward to seeing the next round of logos! and some new ideas from other people maybe? even if you feel like you can't make something, feel free to throw out ideas that might inspire one of the designers around here. thanks! _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! |

Cool, thanks 3th. Bevels, Glows, and Shadows are the photoshop n00b skills they always get when they first start to learn it. I realize that your shooting for vector art....NOW, lol.../me slaps 3th) My point behind the "Layering" is to be very Eyecatching. THINK, people will be WEARING this or Drinking from it. N00b layering does not always apply when your doing printwork. Note the different colors and brightness. These are the elements you will want to target when your focusing on bringing attention to JUST a logo. I understand the corporate identity theory and yes, 3th your one/two color logos certainly give that impression of corporate identity. (Very creative, btw ) So, i will give another crack at it using freehand and illustrator. But my theory will probably stay the same on the design. I do this for a living as well ya know, gotta trust my instincts, hehe It will change though, I like some of Halendors ideas for sure. -DM- _______________ One Day, it will all end. heya Moby, here we go! i think there's a little too much layering going on between the circular JA background, the saber, and "The Jedi Academy," all with glows and drop shadows competition for attention. overall i'd say there's six separate elements that maybe make things a little cluttered. the three tag lines, "Community, Teaching, Dueling" "www.thejediacademy.net" and "The Place for Jedi Training" might be a bit much. i also wonder how well the lightsaber hilts will reproduce at a high resoultion. are those something you made? or did you get them from somewhere? i think it could be cool to have a lightsaber hilt (maybe one not quite so rendered) act as more of the logo element (the way the circular J and A are now.) and then let the central "The Jedi Academy" sit just above the saber hilt. (just found a page with high rez enough images that you could "draw" on top of to get sort of an orthagonal side view of the saber as the logo element.) i like the idea of using "the place for jedi training" as it makes a good connection back to the slogan used on the site here. um...yeah, so that's my professor critique mode coming out please everyone, more entries! more feedback! _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! |

As for slogans, I thought of: 'The no. 1 global Jedi community'. My thoughts on DM's logo: Good: - url; lowercase pwns - logo; it's rebel-imperial, right? - lower slogan; I think it works, 'the place for jedi training' - composition; good stuff Less good : - font; maybe a different (rounder/harsher) font for the slogans? - sabers; they seem a bit unnatural, too short maybe - red/blue; this is really personal, but I don't like these particular shades - maybe a bit darker? |
