To answer your question, AM and PM stand for Ante Meridiem and Post Meridiem. This was a descriptor used during Roman times (and hence in Latin)to describe the time of day. The time of day was often just broken down to two parts and not into all the increments technology allows us to have today. "Ante" means Before or Prior to and "Meridiem" means middle of the day. Therefore Ante Meridiem was used to tell of a time before the middle of the day when the sun was directly overhead (what we would refer to as noon). Post Meridiem would refer to time after the midday point (or after noon). So to answer your question, yes, AM is after Midnight and PM is after noon. I can never remember, what are fx 9 pm in the non-american way (or what ever it's called), like 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, etc.? Pm is after 12 noon, and am is past midnight, right? |
