4.6.3.2: Defeating Katas -Sfire - Nov 10 03:56am | |||||||
Single Saber, as you know, has 3 different stances. The first stance would be blue. Now, not many people use blue stance (except to lunge), but you must be prepared anyways. Blue Stance Blue Stance has 2 katas, and one isn't really even a kata. The one that isn't really a kata is the lunge. You will see this move often from some people, and here is the best way to deal with it. I would recommend a horizontal scissors or buzz saw. The lunge goes quickly, so you must be fast with your swing(s). Also, make sure you avoid getting hit by the lunge. That may seem obvious, but believe me, if your timing isn't precise, that lunge will tear you up. Odan-Wei: To avoid being hit, there are 2 solutions. First is to dodge it, and the second is to counter it. First is obvious and not too hard to achieve. The second, however, is a lot trickier. To counter the lunge, you have to see it coming (i.e. be ready to swing at the very moment it is started or better, a fraction of a second after it starts). If you use a powerful swing, such as uppercut, you may counter it, or weaken its effects on your health. The main kata of blue stance is the twirl. Now, you don't really see this move too often but when it does happen, I figure the best move would be a lunge or even a roll stab. It is possible that you may receive little damage but your opponent definitely received more. Yellow Stance The yellow stance has 2 katas as well. The first we'll talk about is the Yellow DFA (Front Flip 180). I found that the easiest way to kill this kata was actually 3 moves. I suggest trying the horizontal scissors, the buzz saw, or a butterfly. Each of those will be effective. Yes, there are some other moves that would work like the rollstab, but with the time you have, I found the first 3 moves I listed worked the best. The second kata for yellow stance is the twirl. It ends fast so when you see this move start, you must know exactly how to handle it. Due to the time you have, I would suggest jumping in on your opponent with some crouching horizontal scissors (when the final swing comes down). Now depending on your position, other moves could work too, but if you are in front of your opponent, the crouching horizontal scissors will work the best. You may also try a lunge, but in order to do that, you must predict where your opponent will land. Red Stance The red stance really only has one kata. That is the spin. This kata can be really effective, but don't worry, it is actually the easiest kata to attack on. It goes fast, so once again, you must be precise. When the move starts, you want to be close, just out of reach of that final slash. During that final slash, start in with a buzz saw but make sure you avoid that final slash. After avoiding that slash, your opponent will be really open and your buzz saw will tear him/her up. A not so kata for red stance, is the RDFA. All it is, is a lunge in the air and comes down on your head. The best way to take this down, is to avoid the lunge, and be attacking with horizontal scissors, or the buzz saw. Both work well and will do numerous amounts of damage. Staff Saber As you can tell in the Staff Tutorial, Staff has 4 different katas. Now lets say your fighting duals vs staff. Your opponent does a kata. Here is how to handle it. Butterfly -- The first kata we'll talk about is the butterfly. Now, when you opponent does a BF, the first idea that usually comes to mind is run/avoid. Sometimes you will have to do that, but there are two moves you can do that will defeat the BF. These moves would be the butterfly and a simple side swing. However, your timing has to be very good. To counter the butterfly, land your butterfly right on your opponent's head. To counter the butterfly using a side swing, it is actually rather simple. As your opponent does a BF toward you, just move backwards as it comes toward you but make sure you aren't close to getting hit. When your opponent's BF is about to end, run forward and to the right. Right before you pass your opponent, just press swing and it will do a nice amount of damage on this specific kata. Helicopter -- This kata can be a hard one to beat at times, however there are a few moves that can work. My most favorite to use on a helicopter is the lunge. I like using a lunge because, to someone standing still, this move does numerous amounts of damage. As the helicopter spinning comes to an end or is close to ending, do a lunge and it will go right through their body doing an amazing amount of damage. Note: A roll stab will always make your opponent think twice about doing this move. Say for some reason you didn't lunge and now your opponent starts to do a rollstab from the previous move (will happen sometimes), just run at the roll stab, dodge it, and buzz saw your opponent. A nice side slash could also be a good move to use here. Blade Barrier -- If your opponent does some vertical scissors, I would jump for joy! If you really want to tear someone up, this is the time to do it. Your opponent starts the vertical scissors, and you notice, he has no protection on the sides or the back! So this is what you do. Do a quick jump to his side/back (or run, but get there fast) and start a buzz saw. The buzz saw will do tons of damage here. Another move that would work would be the horizontal scissors or even the roll stab. If you do a roll stab and stab him in the back, big hit there. Dual Sabers Vertical Scissors -- The dual sabers have 3 katas. One of which is the vertical scissors. This follows the same idea as the staff vertical scissors. So here is a copy of how to deal with it. If your opponent does some vertical scissors, I would jump for joy! Twirl -- Though the dual sabers twirl is an effective move, there is a way to defeat it. Ok, your opponent just started the twirl and your seeing the sabers going in a circle. Right before the twirling stops, do a lunge. So by the time you hit your opponent, his sabers should be floating back to his hands, which means he's practically defenseless. Once again, your BF should hit your opponent in the chest on the way down. Note: A roll stab will work in this case, which will make your opponent think twice about doing this kata. Duals Butterfly -- Alright, yes the dual sabers have a butterfly. They can be effective at times but here is how to make it not as effective. You see your opponent start the butterfly, all you got to do is lay a butterfly of your own, right in their path. Try and lay it so when you land, your saber lands on their head or right in front. This will tear your opponent up, however, there is a possible chance that this move won't work and you will end up getting the worse of the damage. |

An easy way i've discovered to beat the red kata is when they initiate it you move to their left and use the A+S button combo on them this will kill or heavily damage! |

a good way to prevent your Lunge/Uppercut, from getting countered, is to train doing it fast, personally i have trained it both standing and jumping(landing) so i can now wether im using dual sabers, or Single red stance, instantly change stance and launch a Lunge without warning. While most kata's are easy to counter when used by a lesser skilled opponent, the secret behind using them is simple. "Timing", if you launch your kata at excactly the right time, no matter which kata you're using, you will catch your opponent offguard, and do a GREAT deal of damage. Unfortunately most people look at the kata's as being 'noobish' or 'cheap' and thus never take the time to learn the timing required to fully utilize them. _______________ It takes courage to grow up, and become who you really are. Considering I'm a duals user, I've seen some good ppl counter the dual butterfly with red single with just a strong side swing. _______________ "Do or do not, there is no try" Jedi Master Yoda Dual Saberist |

The yellow DFA is also a creative, yet effective way to punish flurries(staff/dualies) and the main katas. the timeing is a bit difficult to pull off, but once you get it, you can score for 60+ damage and look good doing it _______________ some people may act like they dislike me, but deep down, they know they hate me xfire - Malice189 |

The name matters not..its how you do the move. I provided a detailed description for each move and a name that also described the move. Go to MODHQ.NET and I have a provided a audio, demo, and picture tutorial for duals. Describes even more than what I described here. _______________ |Sfire - Padawan to MOTREC, Gradius| |Owner of Motrec's and Gradius's 999th Comments! Also Smily's 5001 comment and 3th's 1903 comment!
